Here I show the final steps in the restoration of a very basic Elgin pocket watch from the early 1900s. This restoration took a long time because I had to acquire a lathe and familiarize myself with its use before I could do the necessary repairs. It's a nice little watch with no monetary value - something to enjoy and maybe give to a friend or family member.

Very nice watch. Saving it, even though many would say that it's not worth it, is admirable. Everything these days is "disposable", with built in obsolescence and it's wonderful to be able to bring things back to life.

Absolutely, I agree completely Peter. Even if these watches are cheap, they're built so that you can work on them - unlike a lot of modern tech. The other good thing about this watch was that it pushed me to build skills that I otherwise wouldn't. For that alone I think it was worth doing!

Well worth the tine it took to finish. Beautiful watch! At 295, that's an excellent amplitude. Congrats. Enjoy it!

Thanks very much my friend, it definitely has its charm. That's not the true amplitude as I haven't calculated the lift angle. But I'd say it somewhere in the 285 range. I should do that soon but it's humming along really nicely in my pocket now :)

I like the dial and the hands on this 303, very elegant. Very smart way of setting the minute hand in sync with the hour hand by letting the watch run for a few minutes. I’ve never seen this before and it makes a ton of sense. I would be interested to see what method you used to calculate the lift angle for your timegrapher, I hope one day you will make a video about it. Thanks a lot for sharing another useful video John!

Thanks Emil! On this watch I was lazy and never calculated the true amplitude. Of course you can see when it's making about 270 degrees when you see the perpendicular arms of the balance touch or cross the line of centres (the pallet arbor). So I could just tell by eye the amplitude was sufficient. But yes absolutely I should do that in future!
