Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ebikes makes those hills much less of an issue.. Every city needs to be a bicycle city. We all need to support healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation options. Add a little more green space, bike lanes and outdoor dining to the city and it is a winner.

I started never eating breakfast about 9 months ago quit beer and don't eat anything until after 12:00 P.M. and if I am not hungry don't eat dinner and after about 3 months lost 30 pounds. Now have less weight than I did when in my 20,s and I just turned 67 years Nov. 12.

A question: what happens if you exercise before and after a meal?

I normally do a 15 minute HIIT cardio before breakfast, after not eating for 15 hours. I will do strength and resistance training later in the day after eating. I also love me some tasty yellow split pea soup.

All of that is nonsense. Your workouts will be better if you eat first.

NOTE: A postprandial walk of the same distance and intensity is up to 30% more effective at controlling blood sugar than the same exercise before a meal. BUT, exercising six hours before a meal optimises fat burning. A tough choice indeed.

Even just 50 squats after a meal reduces the blood sugar spike too 😊

If your blood sugars are spiking into the dangerous level, easy choice...first stabilize blood sugars, which can be done through medication, eating a plant-based, whole foods diet, and exercise. Once you have the sugars under control, switch to exercise after fasting 6 hours.

Exercising before meals blunts my post meal insulin spike because the muscle are grabbing more glucose when I eat, lowering insulin requirements. 30 reps of 25 lb dumbbell curls any time I am losing mental focus from high blood sugar brings it down enough and only takes a couple of minutes.

Wouldn't the recommendations for diabetic be beneficial for the rest of the population since so many people are insulin resistant or prediabetic without realizing it?
@NutritionFactsOrg
@NutritionFactsOrg 7 ай бұрын
Hi, @leekflower1! The quick answer to your question is yes. The same lifestyle recommendations to help people with type 2 diabetes can also be useful in preventing it. You can find everything on our site related to insulin resistance here: nutritionfacts.org/topics/insulin-resistance/ Everything related to diabetes may be found here: nutritionfacts.org/topics/diabetes/ I hope that helps! -Christine Kestner, MS, CNS, LDN, MPH, NutritionFacts.org Health Support Volunteer

I would like to know what cortisol is doing when exercising in a fasted state. For people with autoimmune issues exercising fasted can be interpreted as more stress.

I take 1tbsp of beet root powder as a pre-workout-I'm looking for boosted vasodilation from the nitrates in it. Do you posit this pre-workout would affect the fasting time required to see the benefits of fasted exercise?

I didn't get it, does it matter to exercise before a meal of after a meal?
@Westernwilson
@Westernwilson 5 ай бұрын
It was never stated explicitly, but *time your exercise based on your goals*. If you want to lose weight, exercise when you have fasted at least 6 hours...on an empty tummy. If you are trying to control diabetes sugar spikes, exercise after a meal.

I would argue (based on current theory as there’s no trial yet) exercising after meals in diabetics to control blood sugar is just treating the symptoms and not the cause. If exercising in the morning in a fasting state burns more fat and fat is linked to insulin resistance (i.e. type 2 diabetes) then in the long run a whole food plant based diet with exercise in the fasting state would be best. Also it’s much easier to put in a good workout with water alone during a fasting state with an empty stomach than trying to do intense exercise with a full stomach.

True, but if post-meal exercise prevents BG from going too high and causing cell damage so that's one benefit.

I've heard that if we exercise after a fast we burn muscle, which would also explain the lack of difference between those exercising before and after meals, as muscle is more metabolically active than fat when resting.

Interesting info. Thanks for sharing Mr. Greger! It appears that always a simple walk around the block after a meal is a good practice. P.S. I love my new red lentil flat cake recipe!

Yea, except when you study fasted cardio over longer periods, like months, the fat loss is the same as fed cardio.

Hi, @MsJesseLynn! Yes, some of the studies were reviews of other studies which included women, and at least one study, this one, pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28692687/ focused on women. For future reference, you can access links to all of the studies cited in NutritionFacts.org videos by clicking the "Sources Cited" tab below the viewing window on our website.
