THIS IS MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME!!!! The amount of layers and omages that exist in reference to older times/cultural moments is INSANE. MORE THAN HONEYMOON !!!! Cruel World - by far one of my favorite lana songs ever. The complete epitome of what she exudes in her artistry. Never in my life has a whole 7 minutes flowm by so faster than everytime i listen to this song. Ultraviolence- dating back to some of her very first demos from around 2007-2008 she used this word in a song called Hundred Dollar Bill (Ruby Tuesday) and said in an interview years later than she had always wanted to use the name of for a record to explore themes in the majesty of darkness. You were definitely SPOT on with the Jim reference, as she uses J names for lots of men shes dated in the past . The original music video for it (later used for Freak) was deemed too controversial to be used for the song at the time of release because it showed her drinking kool-aid and participating in an orgy style drug trip with other women (sirens). Shades of Cool - Legend has it this song was a James Bond reject, that Lana felt such a connection to, she chose to keep it around. The beginning lines of "he lives in CALIFORNIA too, he drives a chevy MALIBU" are an immediate giveaway of how careless and polarizing her lover is. There are multiple nods in this album at the fact that parts of lanas artistry are drawn from both east and west coast ideals, hence the tracklist bouncing back and forth from New York, to California! To even Florida! Brooklyn Baby - another one of my favorite Lana songs, she originally was going to feature Lou Reed himself in it (as the man who harmonizes with her at the end) but sadly he passed away just days before they were supposed to work together! She was a HUGE fan of the Velvet Underground/Beat Poets/Jazz and even now can the influence of that time like Joni Mitchell be found in her music!! West Coast - Definitely one of her most iconic songs to date. Which could reallt be said about any song from this album, but this one especially became an anthem while drawing aspects from California Love , a song by some of her favorite hip-hop artists. It's almost a direct love letter to the haze of the state and city of angels. The music video is also a direct mock of Chet Baker's California documentary!! Sad Girl - cute but, simply a filler LOL she was definitely trying to build up a certain image with this album and the under eye liner of the era says it all. Pretty When You Cry - The vocals in this song were recorded in ONE take. The title differs from the actual refrain Pretty When *I* Cry because in this song she is singing to herself. Money Power Glory - there is much irony littered through out this album, but Lana is a woman who wants what she wants, and will usually not stop at anything until things go her way. Hence why she has such control of her own music. This song specifically details Lana's encounters with business men of the music industry early in her career, and also lovers whom she felt might've leeched off of her building image. She will take anyone for what they've got! Its almost like a Pslam for those who are strong-willed and stubborn! F*cked My Way - Absolutely positively, ironic. Many people at this time in her career, mainly the media, questioned her authenticity as a songstress. So while it may appear she's describing another woman, she in turn is the dragon in this song. Completely and (frankly always) underestimated, yet coming down hard on those who have much to say. It's no secret that she is often the blueprint when it comes to how alternative culture these days has grown back to being somewhat infused with classic alternative and culture. Old Money - Apart from being arguably one of her most intimate and gut-wrenching pieces, this song actually reuses a melody from a little laptop demo she made alllll the way back in 2006-2007 called 'Methamphetamines'. While her past drug use is shrouded in elusiveness and mystery, its no secret that the times in which she (may or may not have been using substances) while trying to figure out where to take her life next in the early-EARLY stages of her career, mean a LOT to her. Its in songs like these where the enigma that is 'Lana Del Rey' seems to be preaching to a young Lizzy Grant , and reconnecting with a person she has long grown away from. Its also in songs like this where her true cryptiveness is revealed, as we as the audience and fans will never truly know how much the source material actually compares to the final product, or if it even has any meaning at all. It could just be that she wanted to re-use the melody haha. The Other Woman - so this is where the album ends in the standard version of the record. Which in my opinion, could not have been a better closer. The idealistic exploratives she details throughout this album of feeling like an other woman to both herself, and past romantic interests, become clear with this song. She was never singing about another woman. She IS the other woman. I didnt wanna type you a whole novel on this record , though it could definitely be done haha, but i will wrap up by saying Black Beauty is my favorite Lana Del Rey song ever. Its both submissive and confrontational . On one end of the song she confronts her own sadness, by implying that its not necessary, but on the other she finds a majesty in the beauty of sorrow. Which in my opinion, is where her writing thrives. These days, she has eluded to this song being about a past love, who could not see the world for what beauty may lay within it. It is unknown though, because it is very hard for her to talk about.. she rarely references this song without crying or tearing up.

There is 2 reads on both ultraviolence's and cruel world's lyrics and one is a personification of her alcohol addiction she used to deal with. Jim in ultraviolence stand for the whiskey Jim Beam.

in her next era, Honeymoon, the music video for the song “Freak” alludes to Jim Jones and drinking the kool-aid!!!! also the manson family vibes too..
@inesmoura3643 жыл бұрын
And that video was made originally for the song ultraviolence but she only used the video later on with freak.

The song Ultraviolence is about alcoholism and a cult! When Lana was 14, she was sent to rehab and boarding school because she was a severe alcoholic. The song uses a violent relationship as metaphor for alcoholism. The name ‘Jim’ is referencing the bourbon Jim Bean. The deadly nightshade is also a reference to alcoholism as it was used to treat it. When Lana was in her late teens and early 20s, she was involved with a cult in New York. This album is basically a metaphor for alcoholism, as well as some songs actually being about abusive relationships

oh god, I don't know if I'm ready for this. When this album came out my ex and I were popping painkillers and listening to this album nonstop (with candles and incense and stuff.) I haven't listened to it yet since he and I broke up and I quit the opiates... I'm glad to be listening to it with you, though. Here goes!

Your reactions are AMAZING and UNIQUE! It really does take some knowledge of poetry to completely understand Lana's lyrics. I am also a Poet, so I too love Lana. My interpretation of The Other Woman has always been that Lana is talking about herself, in that she has been in these terrible relationships and she is always the other woman, even if she doesn't mean to be. Thank you so much for these reactions, they're something special!

Yesss, finally 'Ultraviolence' reaction, thank you so much! ~but~ it's such a shame that you didn't react to 'Is This Happiness?' and 'Flipside'. These aren't available on an international deluxe, as far as I know, but they are amazing and in my opinion really important for the whole story she's telling on the record! I think many of us would want you to react to them as well, they do deserve it, so would you consider this before doing the next album, please?
