"Next, one of the most famed poems in American literature, by Robert Frost, an ambiguous poem, interpreted in different ways, is it about regret or pride? Only you can decide but perhaps the title provides a clue as to the poet’s intention."
"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
• ────────────────────────────────── •
A nem járt út (Hárs Ernő fordítása)
Rőt fák közé két út vezetett,
S csak egyre tehettem lábamat,
Sokáig álltam, s míg lehetett,
Szemmel követtem az egyiket,
Míg el nem tűnt a bozót alatt;
S a másik útra tértem, amely
Ugyanolyan szép volt s jobb is talán,
Mert járni való fű lepte el;
Noha járt voltában semmivel
Nem tett túl egyik a másikán,
S mindkettejükre e hajnalon
Láb nem taposta levél borult.
Az elsőt, ó, máskorra hagyom!
De visszatérek-e, nem tudom,
Ismerve, hogyan fut útba út.
S így kezdem majd sóhajtva mesém
Valahol sok hosszú év után:
Két út vitt át a fák sűrüjén,
S a ritkábban járt lett az enyém,
A különbség ebben áll csupán.

To me, the theme of the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost is how you should, when faced with a decision, make the choice that seems right to you, not based off of the choices of others. There are many examples from the text that prove this. In the first stanza, the person is walking down a path and finds a fork in the road. I think the path he’s walking along is symbolism for life, and the fork in the road is symbolism for choices that people must make in life. He’s regretting that he can’t go down both roads, which is like he’s regretting not being able to make both choices. In the next stanza, after examining the choices, the person decides he’ll take the second path (the second choice). He thinks it’s better than the first one, even, because it hadn’t been walked on as much. This is a metaphor for how he decides he’ll go with the second choice. He’s not afraid to take the choice that other people haven’t taken. In the third stanza, the person says that “in the leaves no step had trodden black”. This is further proof that he took the choice that other people haven’t made. He says he’ll leave the first choice for another day, but then he doubts if because he knows “how way leads on to way”, he’s saying that he knows that in life, each decision you make leads on to another, so he can’t go back. In the last stanza, the person imagines himself thinking back to the day where he’s had to make that choice. The poem uses repetition, “two roads diverged in a wood” and says that he took the road not many people travel on, the choice that not many people make. Then he says that making the choice that less people make made a difference in his life. In conclusion, the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost is about how you should always make the choices you feel are good for you, not for others. And if you do, it will make a difference in your life as well.

Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black Both of the roads are equally traveled. The point is he will use this benign choice that didn't make much of a difference either way and tell others that there was a difference, and he chose the option that was less popular, and that he is better off for it. I think it means either people will retroactively play up the uniqueness of their choices/path in life, or perhaps it is a commentary of how when presented with an "equal" choice, we have a tendency in retrospect to agonize over the true qualities of each option we had.

Yes, the OP is falling in to the trap laid by Robert frost here. He never takes a step and both paths are even.

if its about making the right choice, why is the poet telling it with a sigh? to me telling ages and ages hence with a sigh tells me that its more a feeling of regret and longing for different decision that he should have made. but i do like your interpretation.

He chose, not the presumably safer one, where many had gone, but into the unknown. He danced to a different drum , and that is what makes all the difference in life choices. Don’t take the easy path. Tom Hiddleston has the most beautiful voice. Listen to him read The Crimson Petal, and the White by Tennyson. Sublime.

For me its about looking back, seeing the points of divergence where different versions of your life were formed, the point of decision where your life changed, where you could have gone one way or another. How tiny seemingly insignificant choices can lead to huge outcomes. I think the way you view this poem depends on your age, when old you look back and wonder if things could have been different. I did enjoy this reading of the poem.

@@09kaustubhI’m inclined to agree with you, but it’s also a ver poignant poem…….it’s about missed opportunities, and to me the most poignant lines are “but knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back” and, of course, he doesn’t, because he can’t. We can never replicate the exact same situation or the same set of circumstances in the future. It’s a sad poem, but meaningful 🥲

It’s about regret. The narrator sees two paths, one stretches off into the distance and disappears within the foliage whereas the other road is covered with grass and appears to not have been walked on. The narrator realises that, actually, both paths have been walked on before. Fundamentally they are the same. The narrator takes one of the paths and immediately regrets his decision and then laments on this and decides that when he tells this story in the future, he will lie and claim he took the road lest travelled and how big a difference it made, when in reality it would have made no difference. People say it’s a poem about following your own path and choosing your own destiny but it’s the exact opposite of that. Both roads are the same at the end of the day, yet despite this the narrator instantly regrets his choice and resolves to lie about the path he chose and claim it made a big difference when in reality it did not. It’s all about how we can sort of fool ourselves into thinking we are happy with the choices we have made when in reality we will always harbour regret over not taking the other option and what that would have led to, even if it’s such a pointless and trivial matter of deciding which path to walk down

It has made a difference if you helped some innocent person along the way in the road less traveled by. If all you did was fulfill your mission and bow down to the powers that be while they starved and prostituted the weak, downtrodden and slay the innocent. Then it doesn’t matter what road you travelled by because the result would be the same. S.O.B.

A common interpretation, though it is a famously tricky poem even according to frost itself. The main reason he wrote this was actually because of his friend Edward Thomas who was always a sceptic and was someone who would blame himself for whatever choice he made. Ironically this poem would encourage him to fatally enlist in world war 2

Most misread this poem. It is ironic. He really has no choice, they are the same. He says “I took the one less travelled by” which means he took the one less travelled ‘past.’ This is about the delusion he tells himself. He wants it to matter. It does not.
