Mary Yoder was the picture of health, she loved the outdoors, tending to her garden, and working at her family-owned chiropractic office with her husband, Bill. But in July of 2015 she became mysteriously ill. After 2 days in the hospital, and 8 total heart attacks, Mary lost her life. Nobody could explain what happened to her until a poison control expert solved the mystery. Mary died of colchicine poisoning. But who poisoned her? It was her son’s ex-girlfriend, Kaitlyn Conley, who also happened to work at the chiropractic clinic. After 2 trials and 1 hung jury, Katie was convicted of manslaughter, however, her supporters, which include 3 of Mary’s sisters, feel she has been wrongly convicted. What do you think?

I truly think that Mary’s sisters backing Katie so hard was partly fueled by how weird and unsettling it is that Mary’s husband 1) started dating HIS DEAD WIFE’S OWN SISTER and 2) started dating so quickly in the first place. I think it’s clear Katie did it, but I think there are many factors that are making the sisters ignore what doesn’t confirm their suspicions that the husband did it.

@@rubybothma2879grief affects people in different ways. Just because you think a grieving husband should act a certain way, does not mean that that way is the correct way, or indeed, the only way, to act. Many neurological conditions can make people act other than how one would expect. I'm autistic, not diagnosed until my 60's, and I struggle with emotions. I actually laughed when I was 15 and was telling a friend my mother had died suddenly. I didn't find it funny. I was devastated. But I couldn't help it and it made me look very odd. No one knows what he was thinking or what was going through his mind after his wife died. It could well be that he was drawn to her sister because she strongly reminded him of his late wife. Also, if he was of the mindset that he wanted an open marriage initially, that would imply that he's able to partition off his feelings, and segregate different areas of his life. None of that makes him guilty of murder.

@@lisapadgett3491 I personally believe the DA was absolutely certain that Katie’s defence would be to start pointing at Adam and his dad. They gave immunity to them in order to limit her chances of persuading a jury to say “well, I’m not 100% sure it was her. If I acquit her, the cops might end up finding more evidence it was Adam and then they can look at it again”. If the jury knows that Adam and Bill will never be tried - and the state is absolutely convinced they were innocent and Katie was guilty - you’re basically telling them that Katie’s trial is Mary’s only chance of seeing someone be convicted for this case. I don’t agree with these kind of tactics BUT I believe that’s what they did. I really don’t believe Adam and Bill are guilty - I just think it was a prosecution tactic to weaken her defence.

During the interrogation of Katie initially, you can hear her saying “I didn’t want to hurt her,” then when the police reiterates she didn’t want to hurt Mary she quickly changed that sentence to “I wouldn’t hurt her.” It’s these little nuances that make this case difficult. Another difficult part is that people forget just how easy it is to make email addresses and access someone else’s phone. Even more, why are people granted immunity in these cases where murder is involved prior to having definitive proof that the person wasn’t involved. Computers and phones have time stamps hidden that can point to when a site was accessed, why did the police not look into the work one and corroborate if Katie was working during that time? If Adam or the husband was there? Just seems like they rushed this case before they truly gathered all evidence. I’m not actually sure who is guilty and that worries me with murder cases.

This case is solved in understanding complex family dynamics, not fake email accounts.

In cases like this, people aren’t being granted ABSOLUTE immunity, they’re being granted WITNESS immunity. Witness immunity doesn’t protect a person from ever being charged or prosecuted, it just simply protects them from having their own testimony used against them. If today or tomorrow, video surfaces of Bill being filmed poisoning Mary at the hospital, having immunity doesn’t stop him from being charged with murder. During both trials, two separate electronics forensics experts gave testimony on 28 devices they examined, including dates and times. Everything was corroborated and proven. Three months before Mary died is when Katy used the office computer to do research on the drug and then purchase it. A week before the police got the letter in the mail, it was typed and downloaded on the office computer. During this time, a program to hide the IP address was installed, more poison related internet searches were made, and the fake email account was logged into. Two weeks before that, she made an outline draft of the letter in the Notes app on her phone. It’s also worth mentioning that a “patient" of the clinic took the stand to testify she saw Bill using the front office computer. She couldn’t recall the day, she just knew it was a day Katy wasn’t working. During cross examination, it was revealed she’s actually Katy’s friend.🤣🤣🤣 All of this came from a local paper that was covering the trial. Just because Kendall doesn’t mention something, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

@@jenniferarrr I am not 100% on this but it really depends on the type of phone. It is a lot easier if it is say a google or iOS phone since you log into an email account or apple ID which you can do from any similar device. So in some ways yes but the backup may not have the details of "when" sites, messages, etc. would have been accessed since backups are not usually that detailed. What we don't know is if the police checked anyone else's phones, though I assume they did, which they could also see if they logged in as someone others than themselves. Like I said before, there is a lot of missing information and this was all so rushed, I have no idea what was and wasn't done.

For example the finger prints on the meds should be damning but her being able to argue she touched stuff in the office all day can help cause doubt in some people’s minds . However, your channels do honest independent journalism that I feel is always centered on the victims and comes from a place of wanting to help others. The amount of exposure and resources that you bring to cases through your coverage and own generosity inspires me to be more generous and to advocate for others. Happy holidays y’all!

Calling traumatised family members of the murder victim a disgrace is incredibly unempathetic. Even though it clear that Katie did kill Mary, living an experience vs watching a condensed video with all the key facts are two very different things. Sometimes its hard to accept the most obvious answer, especially when its complicated with trauma. Please consider your words before you post something on a public platform where family members of a victim could potentially view it.

While the husband dating the sister shortly after Mary’s death is awful, I think I’ve heard this is a somewhat common occurrence. Through grief, and familiarity and comforting each other it may have accelerated them getting together? Katie is definitely guilty. Her behaviour in her first interrogation was weird… I think she didn’t expect to be questioned or that she’d be found out about the letter. Her behaviour in interrogation two was also quite unsettling and then her indifference during the trial was the cherry on top. As meek as she seems, jealousy fuelled rage can be shrouded in a lukewarm and quietly spoken coat. Adam has genuine, deep hatred for her and he unfortunately will never forgive himself for something that isn’t his fault. RIP Mary❤

I was actually undecided about who killed the mom until Kendall was making her closing statements, and then it just came to me. A woman scorned makes much more sense to me than a husband/son killing their wife/mom and framing the ex gf/office manager. What would be the point of framing Katie? Did the father and son hate her and Mary both? No. There was just no reason to go to those lengths. Just focus on covering your tracks instead of doing that PLUS framing someone who has no appearance reason to want Mary dead. So, yes, I believe the jury got it right but I believe Katie should lve been found guilty of 1st degree murder because how can poisoning someone not be premeditated?
@ralexandra1058

I’m so so excited for the new documentary! I swear, y’all’s work on “Apartment 801: The Christian Andreacchio Case” changed my life. That story, the intricacy and compassion through which you covered it, the work of his mom, the failures of law enforcement and politicians, the corruption, the directing of the film itself, it just hit me so hard. I watch a lot of true crime stories and there are some that stick with me but nothing has ever stuck with me quite like that. Ive never seen any podcaster or producer or director, even from big networks, cover a case in such a way that felt so close to home. It was abundantly obvious that y’all were invested in his case, you were allies of the family, not just impartial journalists there to cover the story for views. I loved how clear the connection was between y’all was. It wasn’t just that you had empathy for his family, that you felt bad for them and wanted a good outcome for them. You guys were invested and seemingly felt the triumph of the highs and the heartache of the lows right alongside his family. When the response was bad, when the election ended how it did, y’all were just as crushed as the people from the area. I think about that documentary and Christian and Christian’s mom at least once every few days. It’s like my Roman Empire. And I imagine it will be long after justice is finally served. That’s largely because of the injustice of it, and I feel some strange connection to Christian, maybe because he seems like someone who would’ve been part of my friend group at 21, but I think it’s also largely because of the way you covered it. I felt like I really knew him. Like he couldn’t just have been my friend, but that he *had been* my friend. And that was less about some archetype or caricature of who Christian was and more about how well you were able to show him at his core, not just fast facts about his life and interests like most true crime documentaries seem to do. Your content has always been victim-centered and family-centered and it was never more clear than in Apartment 801. This is getting long but just know that you are truly one of a kind and I can’t wait to see the new documentary so I can learn more about her case and hopefully use that to make a difference in whatever way is needed.

She is absolutely guilty. The smiles and smirks.. did the "im pregnant and am losing it" to get him back.. the password for the email she set up.. scored feelings for certain. Plus, he loved his mom..removing his mom would leave her as the most important woman in his life, and he would need her for comfort. Obviously all the evidence, too. I believe the motive was she was jelous of how much he loved his mom, and how amazing if a human she was..and she herself could never compare.

I do honestly believe Kaitie did knowing that Adam would be a suspect and she would appear to have “no motive.” Just like she said “poison is a woman’s weapon”, she knows how investigators look for motive and family is considered before anyone else. I also have a question…in the case of a murder like in this case, would a murderer (like kaitie) normally admit to their lawyer(s) the whole truth of their involvement? I’m really trying to figure out if lawyers tell their client to divulge EVERYTHING because they are sworn to secrecy and they will have to defend them regardless of their guilt or if lawyers are arguing because they’re actual believers of their client’s innocence. Like hypothetically if kaitie told her lawyer she killed Mary, it’s just so brazen and evil to make a statement sobbing while she’s pleading her innocence at her sentencing right in front of her lawyer like that. It looked like her lawyer was crying during Adam’s statement and I can’t help but feel it’s because he feels guilty that he’s trying to defend the muder of a woman who’s already caused the family so much pain. I don’t understand that anyone could defend people who they KNOW FOR A FACT are child molesters, rapists, and cold blooded killers of amazing people. I’ll never understand how people spend their one chance at living life causing pain so horrific but people are sick and twisted. But how can someone who’s apparently functioning members of society and not sick or twisted defend the most evil animalistic souls.
