Back in 1998, there were sets of Pokémon cards released in Japan that were sold on sheets in vending machines: Blue, Red, & Green. I'm going to be looking at every single one of these cards one set at a time starting with the Blue Series. Most of these cards all appear in Pokemon Trading Card Game 2, also a Japan-only release. This is Series 2: Red.
Part 1 (Blue) is here: • Pokémon Vending Cards:...
Intro, Background, Pallet Town Remix by Joshua C. Griffin.

Fun fact on the Master Ball: apparently Pokémon agrees with you as they changed the effect of Master Ball in the Black and White TCG series to search for any Pokémon, but it was classified as an ACE SPEC card, which you could only include one of in your deck. The effect of Master Ball from back in the day is the current effect of Great Ball.
@edsylan2275
@edsylan2275 Жыл бұрын
i really like the change, it makes the 4 original pokeballs a lot closer to the games. Pokeball is the least reliable, since it requires a coinflip to work. Great ball is more consistent than pokeball at finding pokemon, but you still have a chance of not finding anything in your top 7 cards. Ultra ball can find pokemon very consistently, the only way it doesn't help you search a pokemon is if you don't have 2 extra cards in your hand to discard for its cost. And master ball always searches a pokemon, and the only restriction is how many you can play in your deck (similar to how the games usually only give you 1 master ball)

That Vending Voltorb does in fact count for itself and it's actually kinda scary if it gets set up. It's also the card that got me wondering "what the heck was wrong with the pixelart" when I played TCG2 recently. Finding out about Vending Cards through this series clears up a lot. Gameplay-wise, many of these were absolute highlights for me, even if the artstyle isn't always my cup of tea.

I never understood why Onix wasn't stronger than he actually was. It's a massive snake made of pure rocks. This thing should have an attack stat that reflects this. Its weaknesses are fine, but I always felt like this stats, particularly his attack, didn't reflect his actual look. He looks like he should pack a serious punch, but he just... doesn't. Never made any sense to me.
@griifster99

His stats suck cause he’s Brock’s ace, gamefreak didn’t want the first gym to be too hard They didn’t balance for multiplayer, they balanced around the single player experience Same reason why rock throw has 60% accuracy and RBY mewtwo is the most monstrously broken creation in the series

Pretty darn sure that the Voltorb itself does count as a Voltorb in play for the attack, otherwise it would say "other Voltorb". So if you're using Game Boy Ditto to get more Voltorbs and your opponent does the same, you could theoretically do 140 damage with that attack (which would have to be to another Voltorb, of course, haha)

According to someone on Reddit, the artist of that Hitmonlee card did an interview where they said that the thing it's stepping on is supposed to be a Fearow. Personally, I suspect that it probably wasn't supposed to be any specific Pokemon, since this was back when normal animals would sometimes appear on cards. I've always thought that cards like Jynx should apply weakness/resistance based on the types of its attack, not its own type. But doing it this way does give monotype decks more tools, so it probably works out better. That Omanyte looks like it has some very heavy eyeliner/eyeshadow to me, like it's a teenager going through an emo/goth phase. And that's just too silly not to love.

I like that this Moltres doesn't require a heads flip to do damage. 50 damage is decent for 4 energies and no drawbacks. Vending Kabuto works well with the (fossil?) Aerodactyl's pokemon power that prevents evolution. Keep Aerodactyl in play so your opponent can't evolve anything, and use Kabuto's pokemon power to put it back in your hand when you want to evolve something. Works best if you have a spare Mysterious fossil on your bench though, because you can't put it on the old mysterious fossil on the same turn you removed it.
@Paraspectre

I like what they did with the fossils here. They can kinda play off of each other and can be in any deck
@pesilaratnayake162

@@Paraspectre Yeah TCG2 has heaps of options like this that can be a different type than your energies, or that has a pokemon power that makes it worth benching without ever attacking with it (like lvl20 Mr. Mime in case weaknesses and resistances are unfavourable in any battle, or Dark Dugtrio to make retreating dangerous for your opponent, or Dark Dragonair to bring out evolution pokemon every turn). Perfect for one type of energy only battles, as tedious as they are to set up!

If we used a similar card like Voltorb in the modern TCG, the active Voltorb would count as a Pokémon in play. Lol, the classic Master Ball works just like a modern Quick Ball. Nowadays, the Master Ball card does let you search your deck for any Pokémon

12:43 Art is a really nice defensive option against sniping electrics, i.e. jungle Pikachu, and uniquely for a water has no weaknesses itself. There were a lot of odd design choices made for move effectivity like Gyarados being weak to grass. Allegedly the card game was first developed alongside the games so discrepancies like that might lend to some fundamental design changes made and not just errors
