Back in 1998, there were sets of Pokémon cards released in Japan that were sold on sheets in vending machines: Blue, Red, & Green. I'm going to be looking at every single one of these cards one set at a time starting with the Blue Series. Most of these cards all appear in Pokemon Trading Card Game 2, also a Japan-only release. This is Series 3: Green.
Part 1 (Blue) is here: • Pokémon Vending Cards:...
Part 2 (Red) is here: • Pokémon Vending Cards:...
Intro, Background, Pallet Town Remix by Joshua C. Griffin.

I think that confusion rule is implying weakness and resist would not apply to that damage. At the time, the Pokemon did 20 damage to self, so Fossil Aerodactyl would take no damage, for example. Now, three damage counters are placed regardless, which is why it is worded that way now rather than "thirty damage".

@12:40 confusion originally was affected by weakness and resistance, so most of your psychic type pokemon would do 40 to itself instead of just 20. Also you should do the sheet decks.... as close as possible... as a challenge video. Its like these sheets wrote content for you to try.

Yeah that caught me off gaurd in pokmeon TCG GBC, but it seems like a good way to balance psychic types, even if psychic pokemon are the most common pokemon to cause confusion.

"Poltergeist" Haunter + Dark Vileplume, is quite possibly the most evil deck ever... if your playing TCG2. Dark Vileplume prevents both players from using their trainer cards, and Haunters attack gets stronger for every trainer card in the opponents hand! My mate showed this strategy to me, when he was playing an English ROM of TCG, and i was like woah! Thats crazy!

@SamuraiSam
@SamuraiSam Жыл бұрын
Not so much against the CPU in the GBC game, but vending Gastly and Haunter are REAL good, as the metagame for early Pokémon revolves so much around trainers. A nasty combo with Dark Vileplume. Scyther is pretty decent if you have Dodrio on the bench so it can retreat for free. Retreating lets you use the attack every turn. 40 damage for 2 energy is quite good. Small note, Kinger's 80-damage attack technically will never come out on turn 2 (barring a Blastoise) because you can't evolve a Pokémon the same turn you play it. You seemed to overlook the fact that Kadabra's Psycho Panic will do ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY DAMAGE if an opposing Pokémon is a Psychic type weak to Psychic. Of course, it's risky cuz Kadabra is weak to Psychic itself.
@Paraspectre
@Paraspectre Жыл бұрын
Is that true with Kadabra though? The card says the “base damage” is doubled so I took that as it can only double the 30.
@SamuraiSam
@SamuraiSam Жыл бұрын
@@Paraspectre Weakness and resistance are literally calculated using whatever the "base damage" is, so no, it doubles to 30 from the attack text, and THEN the weakness is applied. I'm sure you can fire it up the GBC game and verify it.

I'm not sure if anyone else is going to comment this, but I'd imagine with the Bill's pc card where it says all four of the trading evolution pokemons that they added Omanyte because on the last set of sheets the only pokemon that were on it are Kadabra, Graveler, Machoke, Haunter and Omanyte so I'd imagine they added Omanyte to include all of the cards you could get on the sheets to trade in.

These cards are so fun! They have so many unique ideas and touches. It's a shame that the US never really got anything like this. That Machoke card for instance is, I think, nearly singular that it deals 20 damage to any Pokemon, by saying that Weakness can be applied makes it a potentially 40 power bench hitting move. If you're lucky of course. I do always love the ghosts in the TCG, Sabrina's ghosts were also a great deal of fun. I have to say, deck ideas based on area is somewhat inspired. I would love to see someone make a mod or... well a game, perhaps, that has you taking the trip through Kanto, battling each route and Gym Leader based upon the Pokemon, events through Trainers, and relevant Stadiums. I do have to wonder why they never did an Elite Four based set for Kanto? As a kid I thought that would be the next step after Gym Heroes.

Fossil Psyduck saw play (or at least it does in modern recreations of the time period) for its ability to shut down trainers with a 1 Psychic attack. This Gastly being able to do the same for 1 Colorless would have been even better. Weezing's Poison Mist is almost certainly intended to be used from the bench, while you have other active Pokemon actually doing the poisoning. You might be interested to know that the movie promo Mewtwo that came out right after Fossil absolutely did warp the format around itself The Deck Exchange rule is interesting, but seems kind of flawed. If one deck is significantly better than the other, or has a type advantage, then it could easily win all three rounds, resulting in a 2-2 tie. It could be fun with equally-powered decks, but you'd still end up with ties fairly frequently. Actually, the game where you use your opponent's deck is the only one that really matters. The worst that the winner of that game can do is tie the match by losing the other two games. So if this was a serious competitive format, I have a feeling that people would try to bring intentionally terrible decks. Which I suppose could be interesting in its own way. Rhydon's Mountain Break seems weirdly out of place, or at least ahead of its time. There were cards that interacted with the discard pile at the time, but I don't think they were very common. In fact, part of what made that promo Mewtwo I mentioned so powerful was that it could attach energy cards from the discard pile. I know that interactions with the discard pile would become more common, and other cards would be printed with very similar attacks, but I think those were mostly years away from this. I might also be a bit thrown off by how popular these sorts of self-mill effects have been in Yugioh lately.
