This original composition is a song by Ryuichi Sakamoto, a world-renowned musician from Japan who recently passed away. Many of his great works still remain, and he will increasingly be recognized as a historical composer in the future. May he rest in peace.

Right - Originally written by Sakamoto of YMO, then redone by Greg Philinganes (Greg played keys on Clapton's August album) with additional lyrics from Michael Jackson, as unbelievable as that is. Great verse, though the chorus I've always found weaker, but still really like this old gem, in part because the 2nd chorus is just guitar. This is an enjoyable version. Thanks for posting.
Once Eric Clapton records a song he makes it his own, it doesn't matter who wrote it or recorded it first or tomorrow - EC is the MAN!

@David Mander no it’s owned by the person who wrote it silly

@@dmonsterrrrrrr The phrase 'owns it' is a figure of speech - Clapton plays it like he wrote it thus he 'owns' it. It was written by Composer: Ryùichi Sakamoto who wrote the original song with his band Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1979 where it was popular in Japan.

@@CiscoDuck yes i know what you mean lol but to say that is disrespectful to ymo imo. eric clapton turned this creative and unique song into a very forgettable 80s pop song

@@dmonsterrrrrrr No disrespect intended for YMO on my part. Clapton's version wasn't forgettable in my opinion - I still love it - especially this LIVE version. The studio track got lost as an album track. Back then he was turning out so many albums a lot of great songs just got lost along the way. Plus, there was this whole thing of MJ saying he wrote the song when he only added some lyrics on his unreleased album track. There was this whole disrespect for YMO from MJ about the whole thing, why did EC want to play in that crap? He didn't. He just moved on, just like he did with his women. Can't blame him for either case.

This is the 1988 Prince's Trust Concert. I know this because I have/had a radio recording on tape somewhere of the show with this song on it. I have wondered what the name of this song was ever since I heard it in the fall of 1988. Other videos here of the show (Layla) also show Clapton dressed the same. . . And I think they looked cool! I saw Clapton in Toronto that fall on tour too. I am sure that Bass player was there.

You wouldn’t expect anything but perfection from another top british band, typically if it’s not 110% they would just pack up and go home, nobody and I mean nobody can hold a candle to the Eric Clapton’s Allstars, it’s british talent at its very best there’s no compromise and there never will be, it’s go hard or go home.

So here we go, Yellow Magic Orchestra did it first and except for the vocal bridge in the middle it's essentially an instrumental. Qunicy Jones heard it took it to Michael Jackson, who wrote lyrics for it and it nearly appeared on Thriller; only management disagreements kept that from happening. Greg Philliganes who played on Thriller also played with Clapton and after he did his own version Clapton then did his version. The man who wrote originally wrote this, Ryuichi Sakamoto then did Michael's version of the song with Bernard Fowler on vocals. A great song that everyone sounds at least good on. I personally dig the Prince's Trust version from 1987 with Midge Ure, Phil Collins and Mark motherfuckin' King throwing down a tremendous groove...enjoy!

Michael Jackson wrote the lyrics to the song and the instrumental music came from YMO. MJ recorded this before Mr. Clapton, but it wasn't released until recently. Give credit where credit is due. For what it's worth, I prefer MJ's version. He brings a lot of energy to his songs and obviously the unique and pleasant sound of his voice helps.

Actually Jamezd you are partially right. The main music bed was the original Yellow Magic Orchestra composition, but in 1982 Michael Jackson wrote the new verse lyrics and an additional melody which is what the Phillinganes and Clapton (and later Jackson) versions are based on. In a sense there are two versions of the track - the original composition by YMO and then the version with additional lyrics and melody by Michael Jackson.

@CiscoDuck5 жыл бұрын
MJ did NOT write the song! Chis Mosdel wrote the lyrics - MJ chaged some of them and added a musical interlude for his version (yet unreleased) recorded for his '84 Thriller album for which he demanded 50% of the writer's credit and royalties resulting in a legal dispute from Ryuichi Sakamoto & Chis Mosdel.

It was originally written by Chris Mosdell and Ryuchi Sakamoto.The original instrumental version with choral backing was recorded by the Yellow Magic Orchestra which Quincy Jones bought 2 Michael Jacksons attention for the thriller album. When Michael recorded it, he added a few additional lyrics and wanted to split the royalties which Chris Mosdell refused. Legal battles meant MJ didnt include it on his album and gave it to Greg Philliganes who used it on an album b4 he gave it 2 Eric Clapton.

I know Ryuichi Sakamoto of YMO wrote this. But just like shouting about MJ, isn;t the origin quite irrelevant and shouldn't one just enjoy Clapton? And if one doesn't like it, there's always the option of clicking on another video. There are artists and groups like Simply Red that do almost only covers. Should people shouting about the original or other versions underneath those video's too?
