The buffer I am using is not a dual action. It is a real buffer. Dual action polisher will not cut enough to buff out the plastic.

mossman381 I have watched this several times. I have a ranger also and I'm looking to do the same. I too didn't see you use #2 Fine Cut Cleaner. So I assume you went from Meguiars #1 Med Cut Cleaner, straight to Meguiars #3 Machine Glaze. Also, how much pressure did you apply? I know the key is to not generate too much heat to distort the material.
@mossman381
@mossman381 9 жыл бұрын
Sdupont4LSU Yes I skipped to the machine glaze. If you want to do the fine cut you can. I just wanted this ranger to look better. It's not a show piece. You don't want to put much pressure on the buffer. You pretty much let the buffer do the work.

doesnt car wax have caranuba oils that can damage plastics over time?
@mossman381
@mossman381 9 жыл бұрын
Zeke Rich I thought they stopped putting that in waxes. Most cars now have a lot of plastic on them.
@zekerich5823
@zekerich5823 9 жыл бұрын
mossman381 Most cars do have plastic or ABS bumpers however the bumpers are painted with the same paint as the cars. They ad a flexible additive to the paint for plastic parts. I have never seen a car that has the raw plastic exposed. So when people apply wax to the plastic bumper they are actually applying wax to the paint of the bumper not the plastic itself. As far as i know when wax is labeled 100% carnauba wax it actually refers to the purity of the wax used and not the whole product. Car Wax makers have to blend the wax with oils, petroleum distillates, or a solvent called naptha (commonly used to thin wood varnishes and paints) in order to make the wax workable. The very best carnauba-based car wax is only about 1/3 natural carnauba. Reference: www.autogeek.net/qude101.html
@zekerich5823
@zekerich5823 9 жыл бұрын
mossman381 I was wondering because i also used the same method as you and it worked wonderfully, very glossy. However once the wax had either dried or worn off it left a very dull finish, more dull than before the waxing.
@mossman381
@mossman381 9 жыл бұрын
Zeke Rich I know the painted plastic would not be affected but every chevy truck has plastic covers on the chrome bumpers, plastic mirrors, plastic cowl covers, tailgate cover, bed rail covers and many other parts on various other cars are unpainted plastic. I figured they wouldn't let people use products on cars that would destroy other parts. I really don't know what is in the wax I used. My ranger shined for as long as I had it. It never dulled and it was parked outside all the time.

How would a light sand with 1200 paper and clear coat work?
@mossman381
@mossman381 6 жыл бұрын
400 grit is what you usually need to lay down paint. Sanding with 1200 is like pre polishing. You could sand and clear it. Would look new depending on the condition of the body. The clear coat will probably hold up better and add protection to the plastic.
