Police in Northern Ireland Attacked with 40 Petrol Bombs

Police in Northern Ireland have come under fire from youths armed with petrol bombs.
Officers were searching for New IRA bomb-making equipment in the Creggan Heights area of Derry when they were attacked.
Fifteen homes had to be evacuated after the Police Service of Northern Ireland discovered a "viable explosive device' during their search.

Fires were more dangerous back then. You could burn a block of buildings down with a Molotov but these days with fire suppression systems it's not something you'd intentionally try to use to kill people

It's Northern Ireland, so most likely it'll tie into the conflict between the two dominant factions, the "loyalists" (who support the British ruling the territory) and the "nationalists" (who oppose British rule and want the North to be united with the rest of Ireland, under the government of the Republic). Under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement which ended the armed conflict, the police (the PSNI) are nominal neutral and just work to maintain peace between the factions.
