I served in the U.S. Army in Germany in a tank battalion from 86-89, right at the end of the Cold War. This song captures that time perfectly. I’m an old man now, but this song still brings a tear to my eye.

@@Calinn86 Pfft...the irony of you saying that on a Polish girl's channel... You do a great injustice to the truth -- which is that many people (e.g., Poles, Germans -- East and West, NATO soldiers and even Western taxpayers) sacrificed blood, sweat and tears to give us a world that is much better now, for more people, than it used to be. This is inarguable. Your energy would be better spent working on what remains to be done rather than attempting to deceive others in re what has been done.

This song always touches my heart as well. It was written shortly before the Berlin wall was taken down and with its timing and it's message of brotherhood/sisterhood it became something of an anthem for the fall of Communism. I'm both glad to see that it can still touch fresh listeners today. And saddened that its message of hope remains as needed today as it was back then.. But great reaction girl! And hope you explore more songs by this fabulous band!

This song always brings me back to the end of my teen years at the end of the 80's/start of the 90's. As you said it became practically an anthem, not only for the fall of communism/the Soviet Union, but all the changes which suddenly happened after decades of the Cold War and the world basically being quite nervous. The tearing down of the Berlin wall and reunification of Germany. The release of Nelson Mandela from imprisonment and a few years later the official end of apartheid in South Africa. The warming of relations between east and west (see the images of Gorbachev shaking hands with the Pope for example) and, yes, the fall of authoritarian communism and rise of democracy in many of the states formerly behind the "iron curtain". It seemed like the world was on the right track for a while there and we had reason to be optimistic about the future.

The timing of this song couldn't have been better. Released in Nov 1990, on the album entitled "Crazy World" (pretty fitting title for that time, as post-Cold War Europe was a mess) it came at a time when the Fall of the Soviet Union was in the air. The Berlin Wall fell a year before, in Oct 1989, and then the Soviet Union collapsed the next year in Dec 1991. I was a Senior in High School at this time, and was so hopeful about what the future would hold in the former Communist Block, but as Yeltsin's Reign in Russia came to and end with Putin taking over, that hope quickly faded even back then, because once a KFB agent, always a KGB agent. I tried giving Russia the benefit of the doubt as they were helping build and man the International Space Station, but with Putin's continued aggression into Chechnya, Georgia, and Ukraine, it's clear that Russia has not changed at all since the old days of the Soviet Union. The only real difference is that they aren't hard-core Communists anymore, and they're allowing religion, but other than that, they're still the same ol' Authoritarian Dictatorship that's Hell bent on re-establishing the Russian Empire.

This song will always have a place in my heart. I was a dependent of an active duty Marine at the time and I lived daily with the knowledge that if the balloon ever went up we were gone. A military base would assuredly been targeted by ICBMs. The fall of the Wall and this song erased that terror. Never in all my years did I ever think we'd face that type of crisis again. And yet, this song stands as a testament to people's desire to live in peace and prosperity.

It is quite heartwarming to see you react with full emotion and your appreciation of the music from back when I was in my 30's. I hope you'll take it back a couple of decades with more reactions. You just got a new subscriber.

I've never seen your channel until right now. I'd like to say 2 things if I may: 1. Your reaction to this song was completely normal. This is an extremely powerful song. 2. You should listen to their live version of this from the 2015 hellfest concert. Not only does the singer still sound absolutely amazing in his 70's, but the crowd interaction sends chills right up your spine.

As a little boy in the late 80's I heard this song for the first time. I remember hearing the guitar solo and picturing a man, high above, playing this solo, and light spreading from his fingers to all of the earth. I still have this vision.

Never again. To see this beautiful Polish woman in torment. What herGrandparents and parents had to live through is written all over her face. As an American man, we will never let Poland, our friend and ally, go through that again. It’s crazy. It’s 2024…have we not learned yet? 🙏

Lived in Germany as 10 year kid then and played that song all the time. It's the first time seeing the clip though and I now get that the cold war end was the inspiration for it. Although i lived it i never connected the song with the event. Seeing it gave new meaning and made it a positive emotionfull experience for me.

I can imagine how a Polish girl watching this is going to have a very different reaction than so many others. The Polish people were right in the center of the Cold War. Their country suffered for 50 years. You are fully aware of what the fall of The Wall meant for your country, and Poland is thriving now. I do hope to visit there in the near future. Many Blessings On You!

The 80s have to be the most beautiful magical time in history. It didn't matter who you were, your background where you were from. Everyone got along. It was just one big party back then. The 80s were the closest thing to heaven on earth.

Was a changing time back then. You're so beautiful. If the world was filled with feeling people like you it would continue to be a better place for all. You touch my heart girl. Dogs are better than people. If I see a person mistreat a dog they'll regret it. More power to ya honey. Dogs give unconditional love. My little 2 lb'r turned 16 last month. He is a papered hairy human.

Hello I was 17 when the Berlin Wall fell, and I remember the video of a famous cellist, Mr Mstislav Rostropovitch, giving a recital in front of the wall. I also remember the deferlante of "Solidarność" in Poland and the work of "sapping" communism by Pope Jean-Paul II. A great moment in history which is the basis of this Hymn to Freedom by Scorpion. Yours sincerely Sébastien from France.
