Polo 6R - Replacing front brake pads and brake discs

Here’s a detailed video that shows how to service the front brakes (FN 3) of the VW Polo 6R. This also applies to the VW Vento and the Skoda Rapid.
I take you through a step-by-step video of the whole process which shows how to remove the brake pads, the caliper assembly and the brake discs or the rotors.

The brake pads part number seems to be of the cabin filter and brake discs of the fuel filter. Nevertheless, informative video as always for VAG owners!

@Ganeshbalan very detailed and informative video. But can you post the correct part number here. I am looking fwd to replace the rotors and pads on my rapid. Stock ones develop vibration from braking above 80kmph as soon as 5000kms. I need to skim the rotors every now and then which is very annoying and haven't faced this in any of the other cars i owned.

Nice DYI video friend. Actually, the upper guide pins are a little difficult to remove, the one with the black tie. Somehow removed and while inserting again difficult. The holes were thoroughly cleaned though.

Hi Jinu, trust you’ve cleaned the guide pin holes in the callipers properly. There’ll be a lot of old grease inside. Clean them thoroughly using brake cleaner spray. For the brake job, you’ll need at least 2 bottles of brake cleaner spray or one spray + petrol. The guide pins must move freely without any resistance. The one with the rubber insert is on the bottom hole if I remember correctly. Please interchange and check. Or check my video.

@@GaneshBalan thanks for ur reply. The one with rubber insert is the upper one. Will try once more with break cleaner spray. I just used IPA spray to clean the holes. There was litttle bit of play for the pins that makes some noise on rough roads. I saw the video. Not only that, ur owner thread on TBHP also..

Did the job today, do i need new caliper carrier bolts? And what's torque value of both bolts( caliper pin and carrier bolts)

Ideally you do need new bolts for the calliper carrier when you are changing it. The workshop manual mandates it. But if you are sure the bolts have been tightened to the right torque and the threads are intact, you can reuse the bolts without trouble. Torque value for calliper pin is 35 Nm and for the carrier bolts is 70 Nm.

The 1.2 TDi features a different kind of calliper setup. Would the guide pins be the same? My car has clocked more than 1.30 lakh kilometres and I'm still on my stock brake pads and rotors, surprisingly! Never got the brake system touched by anyone!

Nice explanation sir. Just now I thought of removing the grooves in my Polo which is done 1 L . Do we need to remove the grooves on disc pad also ? If so how to do that ? Also can we do this on ordinary lathe ?

Hi Karthikeyan, just replace the brake pads with a new set whenever you skim the discs on the lathe. Best to not reuse the old pads as the pads will have irregular finish which will scour the discs again. Some engineering shops have specific brake lathes which are meant to do this job as shown in my video. Some shops manage with the normal lathes too.

I used the brake grease from the OE front brake service kit. It is from TVS Girling. You will get these in local auto spare parts shop too. Please use a proper brake cleaner since it evaporates by itself after cleaning and is very effective.

Hey why do we have to use the c clamp ? Also how do we know when to stop compressing it?

Hi, the C clamp is perhaps the best tool to push the calliper’s piston back to the fully compressed state so you can insert the new brake pads. Once the piston is fully compressed inside the calliper, that’s it the C clamp won’t push it any further.

Hi, I am not aware of an alternate method. A C-clamp makes the job very easy and is available in most hardware stores. Please buy one.

The head of the Torx screw holding the brake disc in place is worn out on my Polo. Any suggestions to remove it???

You’ll have to use a screw extractor and remove it. It’s easy. It grips on to the worn out head with its spiral flute and as your turn anticlockwise, it turns the screw and comes off.

What causes scoring of the brake rotors? Based on the cars am currently owning, the passenger side( Front Left) brake rotor is the one that gets warped. Kindly explain if you could relate. Thanks!

Hi, sorry I missed this comment. Scoring happens when dirt/foreign particles from the road gets stuck between the pads and the discs. This causes grooves on the rotors. The discs on the current generation Polo/Vento/Rapid is outsourced to some local vendor and the quality is terrible. The earlier ones were imported from Ate, Germany and had a good quality. I am not sure from when VW made this OEM switch but you can still buy the Ate rotors from their service centre with the part number - 6R0 615 301C. Costs approx. Rs 2200 a piece.

That’s the normal brake grease which comes in a sachet from TVS Girling. You can purchase it from any local automobile spare parts store.

Hi Deepak, it would be a good idea to gradually apply the brakes initially than hard braking to generate heat and transfer the frictional material onto the rotors. Some say this is placebo and you can just go about the usual way of braking.

@17:53, you applied grease which was not siped off before the pads went in. You cleaned on the inner side but missed the outer side. Other than that, all good!

Hi friend ..One query. Did u ever flushed /added coolant ? Basically Skoda/vws are using g13 coolant right. 2 years back i procured BASF coolant and did a flush using distilled water and added BASF coolant at almost 1:3 ratio. The reason for doing this was , the existing coolant color got faded and at normal operating conditions itself temp goes to 95. So after flushing , there was huge difference in cooling. But after 1 year, slightly rust particles appeared and the coolant tank got rusty color. That also need to change.Original ready to use coolant seems costly for 6 liters . The ASS quoted Rs 9000 for flushing and renewal. That also financially not feasible. Is there any source for procuring OE g13 concentrate /ready to use type?

I haven’t done flushing by myself. I had the coolant changed when the water pump was changed during 1.2 lakh km service.

Great attention to detail. My polo tdi 1.5 also needs this. When I apply brakes at high speed then I feel vibrations in the steering, not on slow speeds. It is 80K run. So I think now is time to get the rotors on leith. And, what is recommended tyre pressure for 16 inch alloys?? Nitrogen gas.... Thanks.

Thank you Saurabh. 🙂 Best to machine the rotors when you change the brake pads. Get both done together. Tire pressures are a bit subjective - I use 30 psi on my tires (15”) since I’m the lone user 90% of the time. If your family travels along, consider 32 psi. But do experiment with different values (when filling fuel) and see what works best. 👍🏻

Regarding tyre pressure I’ve tried all sorts of pressures, then finally settled on company recommended, mentioned inside the fuel cap. Front - 35 Rear - 33 Feels good to me. But then also thought of getting your advise. Thanks again. Keep up the good work. One more question on RCD unit, but will ask on that video.

I'm facing the similar issue. Still using stock discs. Car is due for 90k service. Shall I replace the discs or go for the skimming option?

Check the thickness of the discs with a vernier or screw gauge. Lathe workshops will have it if the service centre doesn’t. If it is say, 21-22 mm, you can machine it to 20 mm thickness. Anything lower is not recommended.

Yes there are 2 different types of brake callipers sets for the Polo. Yours is a Polo from one of the earlier batches I presume? The one which has FS III inscribed on the calliper assembly?

The B6s were amazing man. Especially the way the car holds on to the road while taking turns at high speeds like 80-90 kmph. The stability improved by leaps but also compromised on the comfort in the city driving. Bumps could be felt a wee bit harder.

Hi Rowen, the older guide pins are ok if the pads are able to move back and forth without any friction. Did you check this? If you’re insisting on changing the guide pins, let the mechanic replace them.
