We do NOT just play ONE MODE while improvising jazz. We play POLY MODAL. We constantly shape our sound into nice progressions and intertwined flavors by using the MELODIC MINOR MODES. The technique in use has a classical analogy and is inspired by pianist BÉLA BARTÓK and the term "POLYMODAL CHROMATICISM".
Thank you so much to NIKOLAI NOREVIK MYKLEBUST from Norway for his great help making a modal drum&bass backing track in F. We use the backing track throughout the entire video to play along. And by the end of the video the backing track is running solo so you can try out the techniques without me interfering ;) Nikolai has the talent to create an open organic jazz sound - perfectly suited for us to live out our poly modal playground. Growing up, I remember my dad always playing jazz on piano. He loves Bill Evans especially and was enthusiastic about playing something fresh and unconventional. These lessons remind me of that. While I picked up the guitar 18 years ago, I never cared much for music theory and only recently decided I would dive into it after barely having touched a guitar in probably close to a decade now. I felt like I was stagnant and if only I wouldn't have been so stubborn as a child, I could have learned so much from my dad. That's what these lessons remind me of (mind you, I have only watched 3 and don't fully understand it all yet). It's a painful realization, but at the same time Oliver Prehn makes things feel accessible. It's also nice that Oliver sounds so calm and it actually ends up sounding soothing, like musical meditation in a way. It's funny how I am not interested in playing jazz and yet all this does seem helpful to get a better understanding of music. Now that I live on the other side of the ocean, I feel lucky to have found this channel.

Hi mister Prehn, you have a great talent as a teacher!!! My heartfelt congratulations !!! You can break things up very simply and easily and make them very interesting too. However for me, when I then put myself to the piano, I have some difficulty in remembering all the steps you have done, because however it remains complex in itself. It would help me a lot to have, even for a fee, some sheets or handouts in which you simply summarize the passages of each lesson held on the video. I think this can also be valid for others and therefore I would ask you to think about it, you would give further practicality to your already very effective lessons. YOU ARE A GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!! P.S. sorry my english, i'm italian

Hey Oliver, I have some questions about extracting chords other than dominant chords out of the melodic minor modes. I’ve been taking the scale patterns the Hand grips give me and extracting chords with consonant and dissonant intervals and playing them, I get some sus2 chords and some power chords, and some really dissonant chords. I’ve been trying to get the left hand grips you’ve done in your other lessons, as well as the pentatonic grips, Altering them slightly to fit the shape dictated by the melodic minor mode, And trying to use these shapes I’ve been finding inside the scales to make chord progressions. So my question to you, is, is there any “easy” or smart trick I’m missing for locating these chords? For instant I managed to work out the inverted trick, just from exploring these intervals, but didn’t make the jump to my thumb being the wagon hitch! Anyway, thanks again for another amazing lesson, I’m still here and still improvising :)

Hi and thanks a lot. Try to check out this document. On the first pages we extract some different chords from 3 different left hand grips. "Grip 2" is the grip in use in our lesson ;) Best regards from Oliver www.newjazz.dk/Compendiums/left-hand-chords.pdf

Hi, I have noticed that you move your right hand quickly and easily to tackle chords. How to acquire this skill, when we know that in jazz, it is especially the left hand that does this job ? And how to get there, despite the weakness of the 4th and 5th finger ? Thank you.

The touch of the keys is very important. But try for a start to adjust the "Dynamic Range" knob in the "Anatomy" section. This setting may vary depending on the keyboard in use... I hope that'll work for you...

Hi Oliver. When you left the descending "Guide-Tones" in Fifths and you go chromatical (SubV), whats are your intension? Is it to extend the Phrase? (cause its more a inserted SubV) Or your Focus are more the melodic Lines with the "Guide-Tones"? Or absolut freely?? thx one more Time
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi :) Good question. I guess it's just to be absolutely free in my play - without giving it too much thought theoretically. But of course its also a good opportunity to extend phrases, or repeat motifs at different positions - kind of bending the tonality, making our tonal world more dirty and exiting than 'just' playing diatonic... Cheers from Oliver

But one stupid Question i have now: Which "Stepwise Scale" on the green Markers??;) maybe next vid? And what Rules to the Bassplayer?
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 3 жыл бұрын
Hi :) Good questions!! The very 'exotic' outcome of the non-diatonic scales (in green) could be analyzed as a melodic minor scale with something different in the bass. Like at 10:11 we have a "Db-melodic-minor/F" sound... if you catch my drift. This is extremely advanced jazz theory I would say haha ;) The bass player, Nikolai, mostly stays on the F key note, especially on the heavy 1 beat - so that there are no doubt about the modal tonality/foundation. Then he occasionally also hits the 4th and 5th (bb & c) to make some movement. These additional notes may in some cases not comply the scale in hand - but it really doesn't matter as long we hear the clear F key foundation. Cheers from Oliver
