Video #595: Here's what can happen to your polymer clay pieces that are not properly protected during the baking process.... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Topics Covered In This Video:
* How to use a foil pan lid to prevent burning your polymer clay when baking.
* I show two samples of small pink hearts cut from Premo polymer clay and baked for 1 hour at 275F.
* One heart was baked directly on the metal pan with no cover.
* One heart was baked on 4 layers of cardstock with a foil pan lid.
* The one on the pan without the lid got fried to a crisp, and the other was just fine.
* I have seen people on KZfaq baking their pieces on a metal pan all the time.
* This means that their pieces are constantly burning... or more likely, that they are baking for far less time than is required to prevent their pieces from becoming brittle.
* I found a BBQ Roasting pan that fit my metal pan perfectly.
* Line your pan with several layers of manila file folders cut to size.
* I like the heavy weight of the enameled metal pan because it holds the heat and keeps the temperature more even and constant.
* Tinfoil pans used as a base don't hold the heat like a heavier metal pan will.

Having just begun to do polymer clay, yours is the first set of videos that I have found so informative. My wife started making jewelry and after having some success she thought that since I have been interested in her hobby that maybe since I am a chef and do make royal icing flowers that maybe I might try making flowers and other things for her jewelry. I subscribed to your videos and I am so glad that I did. I'm tuning 70 in September and finding something new to do when I am not at the hotel working as the Chef Garde Manger. Instead of using a pastry bag to make hors d' oeuvres, I will try my hand at making polymer flowers, etc. Thank you for your great videos. I want to thank you so much for all of your advice on cooking clay. I have followed all of your tips n tricks :-) .. My clay pieces no longer break and they don't burn!! I cook my clay pieces for about an hour.....I use a cookie sheet with a thick piece of tile and several pieces of card stock and a tin foil baking container with card stock in the top of it, to cover my pieces..... I'm so happy with the results! Thank you so much again for all of your great advice..:)

Thank you, Cindy! This explains why the copper coloured, tree bark textured heart pendant that I baked straight on the toaster oven metal tray scorched on the bottom. The top is fine, but the piece is QUITE thick (about 3/8 inch). The scorch isn't drastic, just a couple of spots, but I didn't know what had happened. After that, I started baking things in baking soda in an aluminum foil pan with foil sealed over the top, to keep the temperature more even. I like that for beads, etc, but I made a flat pendant with an appliqued "rope" edge around the top, which cupped when I was baking it. I fixed that today by rebaking it on a ceramic tile, and letting it cool down on the tile. But burying some things in baking soda didn't seem like it was going to be a good idea; items with mica powders, which I was afraid would wash off when I washed the baking soda off; items with intricate bends, which I was concerned might squash when I was putting the baking soda over the top, etc. So I am VERY glad to see this tutorial video, explaining how to use a heavy pan, card stock, and a foil lid. I imagine that I am going to be using a combination of the pan, baking soda bed, and ceramic tiles, depending on what I am creating. You are SO great to be sharing this information with us all!

I use my kitchen oven because, even though it is electric and therefore cycles, the heating elements are more removed from the clay than a toaster oven. (Got this tip from Christi Friesen.) I use a turkey roasting pan--foil-- on the bottom and either bake beads on fan-folded card stock to hold them a bit removed from the bottom and in place, or I simply put a 6" tile into the pan and bake flat pieces that way. I cover the foil turkey pan with heavy-duty foil to keep in the fumes and take the pan outdoors to cool and then remove the lid to release the heated air into the outdoors. I have used very thin translucent clay, liquid clays and white (thin) Premo and have not yet burned a piece.(Well, there might be a first time.!) I would not use your vented pans simply because they would still release the fumes into the oven. (I guess I'm not that enthusiastic about having to clean my oven after baking!) I do believe that the longer it is baked, the stronger, so I generally bake even the thinnest pieces 45 minutes using my tented system, but I do not exceed the recommended temps. Hopes this helps!

This might be old, but I will share it. I had to pack away my clay dedicated toaster oven and put it in storage, so I needed something to cook my clay in while staying with my ultra senior mother. In the toaster oven I found at the thrift store, the heating element turns bright orange. In the beginning, it was actually turning my light colored clays brown or orange! EEW! So, I took to tenting pieces of tin foil over the projects and this has ended the orange/brown tinting of the lighter colored projects. I like your idea for using a foil pan, but my current oven doesn't have the space for it (it's too squat). I'm going to be upgrading to a 9-slice convection oven very soon, and will try your suggestion using the cardstock and foil pan. Thanks for sharing all your awesome ideas! They're very, very helpful!

Your channel and tutorials are very engaging! Thank you so much for these tips specially for people who can't afford burning their clay 🙁 I have an urgent question and hope I get an answer. I didn't quiet understand, does the foil container have to have holes in it? If it doesn't do I have to make the holes in the tray? And does it have to cover the whole tray? My foil containers don't cover the whole of the oven tray. Will that create a problem ? Look forward to your answer! And thank you again in advance!

Hi! Just some questions about baking... 1. If I mix premo sculpey translucent and a bit of fimo black to create gray color, what is the baking temperature? I'm baking it with 275 F/ 30 mins and it works so far. 2. After baking the gray mix, I want to rebake it with added details using FIMO white. Should I still use 275/30 mins or it is fine to use 130 F/ 15 mins? Please enlighten me.. thanks!

This may seem like an odd question, but how many times can you reuse the manila folder paper? Also, is there a benefit to the tin lid having holes in the sides or did you solely choose it because it fit your pan perfectly? I hope you'll be able to respond, but I imagine it's difficult to keep up with all the comments. Even if you don't find the time, I want you to know how grateful I am to have found your channel. How do you finish off your baking process? What I mean is, the piece has been in the oven long enough, now what? Do you immediately remove your pieces and let them cool or do you shut off the oven and let them cool inside, along with the oven (more like a kiln process)? I am still new to working with polymer clay, but I have been letting the pieces cool down with the oven. Do you know the benefits and drawbacks of using one cooling option over another?

hello! first off i'd like to extend my gratitude to your channel. i recently started working with polymer clay and you have been so much help. one problem i am still running into is occasional burning. i am going to try this method for baking, but was wondering if i was hurting my clay by using rubbing alcohol on my pieces prior to putting them in the oven? i saw that rubbing alcohol was good for removing finger prints and more... some of my pieces in the same batch come out burnt, discolored, and/or bubbly and im wondering if it's from the rubbing alcohol. can you use too much of it? any suggestions on how best to clean your clay?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you bibi for the kind words! That is very much appreciated! 💖 This method should greatly reduce your scorching issues. The rubbing alcohol is not hurting your clay and has nothing to do with the issues you are having. It is a problem with your oven. Also, make sure you're using an oven thermometer to be sure you're curing at the correct temp. You need it hot enough to cure it correctly but not so hot that it is burning your pieces.

Great video! I currently don't have access to my toaster oven and I don't particularly like the idea of the plasticisers contaminating my regular food oven. I was wondering if I could make a sealed unit out of aluminium trays and foil with my pieces inside to cook. Do you think that this would reduce the amount of plasticiers that the oven is exposed to? Would the pieces cook properly? Would there be a chance of the unit coming apart due to changes in internal pressure? It would be great to hear what you think. If it seems like a sound idea, maybe it would be a very useful technique for crafters who don't have the space/money for a polymer clay oven. :)
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 9 жыл бұрын
CrimsonNorway I wouldn't worry so much about the plasticizers in your oven... the clay is non-toxic and you can always wipe down the walls of your oven if you'er worried. But you can certainly seal your clay up in a roaster pan (or an oven roasting bag with a tie) if you are concerned about it. Just make sure to line your pans with cardstock or a bed of cornstarch to insulate it.

PolymerClayTutor I bake my sculptures in a lidded stock pot or other old pot. [I often make 6" - 12" tall sculptures rather than jewelry] There's really no pressure problems at all and it would be tough to make any container that air tight. There's less chance of burning in a large oven because the heating elements are farther away. For baking my smaller objects, I use a counter top glass convection oven, partly because it's vertical shape fits my pieces better. Like with a toaster oven though, I must be more careful to avoid scorching because of the closeness of the elements. I found that most toaster ovens tend to have very high temperature spikes that cause scorching, unless you get a really good one. Great tips Cindy!!

Place the thermometer on the shelf so you can see the temp in the oven while baking.

So you don’t use the polymer clay oven... because it is so small? You use a toaster oven ? Any recommendations??

Cindy, If you bake clay the right way without over burning/or dry out and it is the kind that is strong and flexible after baking, will that clay still be the same strong and flexible over 10, 30, 60 years or will it become dry and brittle?

That is a tricky question, Ben because it would be hard to test that one to be sure. I can tell you, I have some Fimo earrings from the 80's that are still just as strong today, but I can't say that for all brands, all baking methods and all storage situations. Plastics are funny that way, and I would imagine if you were to leave those same earrings out in the desert for 40 years, they may not be doing as well. That being said, if you bake your work properly, and it sits in a reasonable location, it should be around for many, many years to come!

+sara sarahi Use Acetone and a cotton bud, then rub. Cindy has done a tutorial on this also. I think the name is something like "removing shiny spots from polymer clay".

Do you have to cover the clay?

I have seen a sculptor on KZfaq submerging a figure they had carved into a pan of lightly boiling water (there was a small towel in the pan preventing movement). I can't find the link now, but the theory was you couldn't scorch the polymer clay using that method. Have you ever tried that technique?

Hi Paul Mullins putting clay into boiling water can partially cure your piece, and might be a good solution for sculptors would need to do repeated curings when they add to they work. But since water boils at a lower temp than what polymer clay needs to cure at... it won't be fully cured to the core, if it is only boiled. You will still need to bake it again for a full hour to properly cure your piece.

Could you do a review on the new Fimo Kids polymer clay? :) I saw it today in the local crafting shop nearby, but I don't know anything about it so I didn't buy it.

Hi Leena L I haven't seen it in my stores yet. When I do (or if someone wants to send me some) then I will do a review.

Hello mam,as u said we can cover our polymer clay with aluminum foil n bake,I just want to know after baking in this manner can I use the same microwave for baking of cake n rest all things,or I need to do separate arrangement for polymer clay baking

I'm sure you didn't mean to say that, but it is important to mention that you should never put polymer clay (or aluminum pans) in a Microwave! You will burn your clay and possibly ruin your Microwave. In regards to baking in a regular oven or countertop oven, you can bake polymer clay in your oven and still use it for food, just don't bake at the same time. Covering your polymer clay in this manner will keep the oils from the clay from getting in your oven and getting on your food.

No wax paper in oven. It will melt. Parchment paper or a brown paper bag is ok.

is this baking style better than your tile sandwich method for avoid bubbles?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
This baking method does not prevent bubbles in your piece like the tile sandwich dies. This method, prevent scorching from the above elements in your oven. If you are using the tile sandwich, then it naturally is protecting from scorching so a foil pan lid is not necessary. If you're baking a sculpted piece or something that can not go into a tile sandwich that the foil pain lid is an excellent solution to scorching.

I am trying polymer clay sculpting for the first time and I have followed the directions down to the t and yet my clay is burning??? So heres what I did if somebody can please let me know where I messed up...I put my piece which is a figure of a fish on a flat tile and put a plain piece of paper on top of the tile. I then put my piece on top of the paper and tented it with a foil lid like the one in this video. I set my oven to 275 degrees as the clays instructions states. The piece was placed on the middle rack in oven where there are no other metal pieces in oven. I baked for 30 mins and when I looked the clay which was white was brownish on top but I tented so I'm confused??? Help please...
