Video #662: It's encouraging to see that the Polyform Sculpey brand is making improvements to its clay conditioning machine... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Topics Covered In This Video:
* Unboxing the new Sculpey Clay Conditioning Machine with Stainless Steel Rollers.
* I have an Atlas Wellness Pasta Machine that I very much love using... I did the Unboxing of my Atlas a while ago.
* One of the things that I love about my Atlas is that it doesn't leave black streaks on my polymer clay because it has the anodized aluminum rollers.
* So when I heard that the Sculpey machine now had stainless steel rollers, I just had to test that for you.
* One of the nice things about the Sculpey machines is that they are available in a lot of places like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and other craft stores as well as online, and they are relatively inexpensive.
* My Atlas machine was in the $100 range and the Sculpey Machine is in the $40 range.
* I go through the features to see what is different from the old models, as well as demo it to see how well it works.
* In addition to the new stainless rollers, there seems to be some sort of plastic or something filling the gaps between the rollers and the machine sides.
* Also the scraper blades appear to be made of nylon or something similar.
* The handle seems to fit better and the machine seems to move smoother.
* There are nine settings with the #1 setting being the thickest, and the #9 being the thinnest.
* The clay goes through quite smoothly with only faint lines at the thickest setting, and a little rippling at the thinnest setting. This is pretty typical of most machines with a lot of settings.
* The machine appears to be more sturdy and of higher quality than the previous models.
* I will use this machine for a while to see how it stands up... and to see whether the stainless steel rollers keep those nasty black streaks away.
* If this machine does well after being put through it's paces, it may be a great option for a lot of people, since it will be much more affordable than the high end machines. And it is available in a lot more locations.
* I am hoping that this machine is an improvement over the previous models. Stay tuned :-)

I always "season" my machine with Orange Glo orange oil furniture cleaner. It leaves a fine coating that sheds clay nicely, plus it quickly cleans off clay residue. It works on my tools and claying work surface very well too. It doesn't harm the clay either.

Thank you for the review, I look forward to your final thoughts after trying it out. I have a request for a review of the new silver and gold liquid sculpey. I am really excited to play with them. Also if you could find out a release date. I am going to be purchasing a new pasta machine soon. I have the original sculpey one and I don't like it.

Can you please post a video for beginners on how to roll different sizes of polymer clay through pasta machine? When trying to condition and roll clay for a journal cover, i cant seem to get a good size piece, mine comes out in small/long/short pieces instead of a decent size. What am i doing wrong? How can i roll a piece that is larger than 4"?

I recently bought a sculpy machine. After about a five setting it ripples awful! This is the second one I have tried. I think I am taking it back and get one like Cindy has. Cindy one question: Does the Atlas ripple also? I don't mind spending a little more if it is a better machine. Thanks so much. Love your videos!

My clay roller was a pain- the rollers on it are not placed even after using it a second time!! Would like to get another one , but on low income and in my area they are very costly!!

Another awesome video. Thank you for the review on the New polymer clay conditioning machine by Sculpey. Having a mid-range priced mschine is a great idea for novice clayers. Will keep my eyescsnf ears opened for further review. Also, two questions--is there a video on joining your polymer clay tutorials club? I have read the details and I understand them but a visual would be nice.(joining soon) And, is there a video on the shadow caning technique?

Hi Cindy! Can you tell me what are those little slots on the front of the machine used for????.....My machine has them and I don't know how why are they there!!!..,, Thanx in advance! :)

Steph 13 Hi, I presume you mean the two slots (1-2") on either side that stick out a bit? Remember clay machines are based on pasta makers which usually have various attachments you can buy separately to make different types of pasta. I know of one hard-to-find attachment for clay machines - it is a tray that you attach and it sits up at angle and helps support running long strips of clay though the machine. (Generally it doesn't matter which side is front or back, but if using this tray those slots are considered to be on the back of the machine.)

Thanks for reviewing this, Cindy. However I wasn't too impressed with that machine. When you said "no rippling" (I think it was on 2) I could see the ripples on the clay. Seemed to me it pretty much had ripples all the time. I reserve judgment about the nylon strips, have to see what people think about that, and about the bar on the top that closed the previously mentioned gap. Now I got my machine from Debenhams - an ordinary UK department store and it only cost me £16.00 and to start with I had no ripples at all. Recently it's begun to show ripples on the widest setting, but I very rarely use that setting since I heard that it can cause damage to the gears if you use setting 1 too much. Pity we can't just buy a new set of stronger gears, since that's what broke on my last machine and otherwise it was just fine.

Fran OnTheEdge As far as how this machine stands up, we'll have to see... it does appear to be an improvement over the previous models though.The rippling you saw on the clay going through the second setting were still there from the first setting. This machine honestly is not that bad for getting lines on the clay... except on the thinnest and thickest settings... which is very common on machines with so many settings. If your gears are breaking, it means your forcing too hard or too thick of a sheet of clay through the rollers. The gears should not break, even on a crappy machine unless the gears are being forced out of alignment and jamming against each other. It is important on any machine to only go from one setting to the next without skipping more than one or two that the very most... and never skipping with firmer clay.
@FranOnTheEdge
@FranOnTheEdge 9 жыл бұрын
PolymerClayTutor I never skip from 2. Only setting 1 and I roll it with an acrylic roller to overcome that stage. No, the one where the gears broke was a much older machine, and I didn't skip a setting from 2 to 9 on that one either, it was an attempt to use setting 1 that bent the gears - and after I'd been warned, too! It seemed to work on setting 1 for a while too, and then it suddenly jammed solid. My new one from Debenhams is fine... so far. I've never bought a 'Clay Conditioning Machine' only ever 'Pasta Machines'. Which is why I was interested in your review. Would you say the Atlas is in the same class, or better?

I just purchased an amaco today in nov 2016, and it says it has stainless steel rollers, does that mean its been changed since the last time you talked about those machines & black streaks etc.

Mine lasted maybe a week after cleaning the blades. It’s next to impossible to get them back in in the same exact position so they rub against the rollers and strip the chrome off and you get black marks. The machining tolerances with these cheapies compared to an atlas are comparing apples and hand grenades.
