That was a real trumpet, the artist is called Brass Tracks. He practically sings with that thing. You should check out some of his stuff. Not rock at all but great talent.

Those two pick scratches in Vai's solo just makes my day every time I hear it! I also hadn't heard of Polyphia before Steve Vai shared this. I got curious and checked out more videos of Tim playing, and holy hell, it's been a long time since a guitarist blew my mind.

Trumpet by Brasstracks. That is the bandleader playing trumpet. Brasstracks is featured on another song on the album.

Wolfman knows what it takes.. It's so cool watching him light up during the really technical and fast parts. :)

Polyphia has an interview with Steve Vai on their official KZfaq channel. The band and Steve talk about everything from how they created the song and music video, to how the guys were inspired and grew up on Frank Zappa, and even how their recent music has been received by the media. I highly recommend it! It's like watching a dad and his four kids just hanging out on the porch while they chat the night away. Another Polyphia track you guys would likely enjoy is Playing God. Very fun song.

This track is a milestone, a masterpiece... I love how everything is so tight, specially between bass and drums. Most comments are about Scott, Tim or Clay (Aeschliman), but sometimes I feel that it's Clay Gober's play that make the whole thing possible. 5:22 to 5:25 : I don't see much comments in react vids about the fingerstyle from Scott LePage in this small sequency. I am not a guitarist, but that "move" seems very special and tricky.

Those slideys aren't done fingerpicking style but picked with a plectrum. But yeah they are really cool and I tried it earlier today, it's pretty hard to get them clean and slide to the correct notes while maintaining the 3note groups feel. It's blitzing fast and requires a lot of accuracy. Tho as a guitarist of 15 years I have to say a lot of things like the thumping patterns or Vai's first 10 seconds of the solo with his newly invented 'joint shifting' technique - are even more interesting and impressive (and way harder to play by far). These guys are all amazing and really push the envelope on what can be done on a guitar

Polyphia from right here in Plano, Texas! They have evolved a bit. Still getting better, believe it or not. Sometimes have collaborated with vocalists, but their instrumentals are the best. Hope you check out some more sometime. Their video for Playing God is filmed in Fair Park in Dallas.

Lots more to be heard from these guys. They also have their own youtube channels where they upload their own playthroughs of their songs, and Tim Henson describes his writing process for a few songs as well. Very interesting stuff, and so different from what I have always always known about music. They also have a great sense of humour and don't take themselves too seriously.

FYI, the guitarists from Polyphia and Steve Vai are Ibanez sponsored guitarists, as is the bassist. I'm sure mutual connections brought this together.

Guitar players are still being inspired by Van Halen, Rhoads, Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, Petrucci, Becker and MacAlpine. The young guitarists are still inspired by Hendrix, just as Hendrix. Clapton and Beck were listening to and being inspired by older acts like Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Albert King, Buddy Guy and T-Bone Walker. You know, just because you're in your twenties, that does not mean you have no clue who The Three Stooges are. Older acts are still in circulation. The young man with the seven string is Tim Henson, and he was very inspired by the likes of Vai, Satriani and Hendrix.

I can definitely hear the Hendrix and Vai in Tim's playing. Scotty always reminded me more of like a blues guitarist that learned classical, jazz, and how to use their pinky. His stuff is always more soulful and "linear".

it's called Ego Death because Steve Vai shows that he can play the best part of the song without needing to shred or play super technical parts compared to Tim and Scott, therefore destroying their egos.

In philosophy, ego death is a state where you become one with the environment around you, only your id(instinct) exists. It's comparable to the state of nirvana/enlightment portrayed in buddhism.

What the song title may be referring to is the process of playing so much that your hands begin to instinctively move, and you become the music itself.
