In this video I cover the PSI reading on your pool filters pressure gauge. I go over the causes of high filter pressure and low filter pressure. PSI is: Pounds per square inch a standard unit for measuring pressure and the most common factor used in determining when to backwash or clean a pool filter.
A filter pressure gauge is used to measure a filter's PSI and every filter should be equipped with one.
The most obvious reason for high PSI is that the filter is dirty. Simply cleaning the filter or backwashing it if you have a D.E. Or Sand Filter will usually lower the PSI down to acceptable range. The clean starting filter PSI will vary from filter to filter, some hover around 10-15 PSI but many cartridge filters start at 20 PSI. The best way to know in your case is to clean the filter and then mark on the gauge the clean PSI for your particular filter.
A general rule of thumb is that if the PSI goes up by 10, if it is at 15 and goes up to 25, then a cleaning or backwashing is due. This is the best way to lower down high filter pressure and get the pool circulating again.
After cleaning the filter or backwashing it the filter pressure should drop. If it goes back up within a day or week there could be a few reasons for this. One, the grids or cartridges are worn out and need to be replaced. If you have a Sand Filter the sand could be really dirty and you will need to clean it or replace it. Also, if the pool was recently green or cloudy, the filter could be getting filled up quickly with organic matter. Cleaning the filter again usually will solve the issue. If the D.E. Filter grids have a tear or the top manifold is cracked, the filter pressure can rise rapidly after a cleaning.
If you have a Return Side cleaner connected to your pool like a Polaris 360, the PSI may rise while it is connected due to the back pressure created by closing off a return line and by the cleaners connection itself. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about. The pressure may also be higher by as much as 10 PSI when you switch the valves to spa mode. The back pressure created by the spa jets will cause the filter pressure to rise. A water feature may also cause the filter PSI to rise.
So these are basically the reasons why your pool filter pressure will rise.
If you have low pool filter pressure a number of things may also cause this. The most common reason is some debris is stuck in the pool impeller, restricting it and causing the pump to pull less water. A suction leak like a worn pump lid o-ring will also cause low filter pressure. A problem with the pump's diffuser can also cause this.
Some obvious causes are also a clogged pool pump basket, a clogged skimmer basket and low water in the pool. Too much suction at the side port towards a suction side cleaner can also cause lower pool filter pressure. A clogged inlet line can also be the cause of low filter pressure. If you have a variable speed pump and you are running it at or below 1400 RPM, the filter pressure PSI will also read low.
A broken filter gauge can also create a false PSI reading - either too high or too low, so make sure the gauge is in good working order. They are easy to change and it will only take you a couple of minutes to do it.
I mention that a flow gauge like the FlowVis would be a good investment and if you really want to get the best idea of your pools actual flow, I suggest you install one. That way no matter what the PSI on the gauge, you can see from the flow meter how much water is actually flowing into the pool. This is the best way to monitor your pool's actual flow.

Thank you! I'm not particularly a handy type of woman but I have been maintaining my own pool for 8 plus years. I knew the impeller was clogged, 0 psi, kreepy not moving but I thought you had to take the entire impeller apart to clear the clog. The screwdriver technique described in this video worked like a charm! Pool is all back on line now. 😁

My psi was at 3-5 low and by manually spinning the pumps propeller with a screw driver I was able to unclog it with each spin. Psi went back to a normal 14. Saved me some $ calling a pool guy. Thanks bud!

I would recommend using a thread sealant compound when replacing a pressure gauge, using Teflon tape increases the thread thickness and tightening it into the filter head and over tightening it will almost certainly cause a hairline crack in the filter head which will cause it to leak and is almost impossible to repair without replacing the filter head/valve body.

Would high pressure cause reverse flow initially when attempting to prime? It’s reversing temporarily and causing my slimmer basket to upturn; then it functions normally after that

Thanks! Our filter came with no directions or anything, it was pre- assembled in the store and we where freaking out when the pressure started rising. Our pool was using a small filter and it wasnt moving the water; after a few months we finally found the filter we where looking for and here we are.

hi! question for you, I just did the spring opening kit and noticed the hose to the pump is practically squeezed shut. Psi seems way too low. Is it possible something stuck in the hose before getting to pump?

my normal clean pressure is 10-11lbs of pressure however in spa mode it goes up to 30lbs. Is that big of an increase normal?

We installed a new sand filter and have a problem when backwashing. It has been faltering. We have been able to backwash twice, but when when we turn the pump off to change the sand filter settings, the pump does not come back on right away. The last time the pool was vacuumed, the pressure on the gauge started falling below 6. We turned the pump off, and again, it took 6 hours for the pump to start priming again. What could be the problem? We had 3 different pool companies in, and the pump primed the last two times after a cleaning and shut off, however, failed the first time.

When my pool is in low suction settings, I notice a lot of air in pump housing. When in high suction mode there’s no air in pump housing. Why?

My sand filter shows about 10 psi after backwashing. When it gets to about 13-14 psi it needs to be backwashed again (low flow shuts off pool heater and vacuum doesn't work). This filter is about 25 years old and never had sand changed. Do you think this is the problem?

I know this is an older video but I go back to them when I have issues. It seems that you've covered almost all one can have with a pool, so thanks. I'm dealing with high PSI in the case of a sand filter. We had a bad storm roll through. I've dealt with them before but this one we lost power for a week. Wind. Leaves shredded and in my pool, branches, asphalt roof tiles, etc. I got as much as I could out and put in bleach, bleach and more bleach. the water started clearly up some to where it didn't look so much like pea soup but my concern was helping the process out by just getting my pool running. I turned it all on and decided to run the system for 24 hours. I now have a clear pool but a PSI around 50. I backwashed twice. It needed it. I'm afraid to do it again so before I cause any damage, I thought I would reach out to you for help. I came to this video but all it addresses is that the sand filter is dirty and to backwash. Do I keep backwashing to bring that PSI down? I did until it came clear the first time and again the second time. Thanks for your help. Seriously. It doesn't go unappreciated. And by the way, I've purchased product that youve suggested and I've not been 😞. ☺👍

After I clean my filter if I set it to just the top skimmer it goes straight to 20psi if I switch to the sweeper it drops to 10psi I realize it's probably taking in more gpm when on the top skimmer but anyone want to shed some light on this? Because it will be up to 30psi pretty quickly

Thank you for the amazing videos!! I've been a pool owner for almost a year now. Been having alot of issues with vacuuming our pool. Bought a Barracuda G3 and it worked great for a few months. But now it will run for an hour or two and the pressure will rise to the point that it stops moving. Pressure gauge use to sit at 10 psi when sand filter clean and now will sit at 15 psi. Runs fine without hooking up a vacuum but no matter what kind of pool vacuum (manual or automatic) run across same issue. Any ideas ?

Sounds like a vacuum leak - air getting into the pool around the pump. Are there any water leaks? I just filmed a video on your problem this week: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLhhapiWrsvQqZs.html - Start with the simple like the pump lid o-ring and go from there.

had a question for you. whenever I back flush the DE comes out the flush/drain pipe. We have a built-in back flush pipe that goes to a drain fitting. When I do the back flush, it makes a big mess with DE all over the ground around the drain on the side of our house. I removed the filters and didn't see anything wrong. I cleaned the filters and reinstalled everything. About a month later I did the back flush procedure and it did the same thing. DE comes out, and a lot of it. What do you think can cause this? Thanks >>

Probably your P-trap line is clogged up. A plumber can unclog it for you.

Great information... I think I have a stumper issue. My PSI increases within a day to the point where my water fall is just a trickle. I replaced the filter elements and it seemed to work for a couple days but them it’s back to backwashing every day again. I’ve checked the filter screen and the pump but nothing stands out as a problem. When I backwash, it works for a few hours but you can actually see the gauge pressure increasing. I’m backwashing again every day to keep the pump going. Any other suggestions?

There are almost no videos on bad breather tubes or pressure relief valves. These are mentioned in high pressure videos but not expound on. I have high pressure and have cleaned and replaced all of my filter grids. I re-plumed my intake lines because I had to replace the intake 3 way diverter valve. I replace my impeller, and all seals on my pump. I have no suction side leaks. However; I did find that the mesh top on the air relief valve has a hole in it and the manifold has a hairline crack. I may have spent all this money trying to find the problem and it may simply be replacing the mesh top to the air relief valve which is less than $15. It would be awesome if you could make videos on bad air relief valves, problems they can cause, and possible fixes. Thanks

Just mark it with a sharpie after cleaning it. When it goes up 10 psi from the sharpie mark backwash it or take it apart and clean it.

I have a Pentair WhisperFlo 2HP pump with a Pentair CCP320 Cartridge Filter. The PSI is always abnormally high at 30-35 PSI. I cleaned the filter and it came down to about 25 PSI. Is this the normal? The pressure gauge says 10-20 where 20 PSI has an indicator that says "clean filter." I can't seem to get it anywhere near the 10 PSI range. Could it be that the 2HP pump is pulling in water faster than the filter can filter the water thereby creating the excess pressure?

It could just be how your return lines are set up creating more back pressure then your average pool. I have a few accounts with high PSI and it is due to the return line configuration. With 2 HP pulling water in and pool return lines that can't keep up the PSI will read high. You can turn that dial with your hand and set the clean mark next time at 25 PSI. If pool is clear, suction and flow are strong I would not worry about it.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 i will now sleep better at night with this information. i’ve only the same pool for 27 years. with the same original brass pump. i had the pump replaced today and the pressure is reading 22 psi now and i was freaking out. i cleaned the filter about 2 months ago but i’m cleaning it again tomorrow just to see where the clean filter pressure starts at. i was thinking they installed too big of a pump but the flow and suction are better than ever. so it’s probably ok. i can’t wait to just the spa, the jets are going to be way stronger. my 27 year old pump stopped moving the creepy crawly last week, but it’s zooming now with the new pump

Thanks for your videos, have learned so much. Question - Sand Filter: my normal range is 15-25 psi; This year - it doesn’t go above 19-20; I even try adding a little DE to increase filtering capability, my pool doesn’t seem to be learning (still cloudy), any ideas on what can cause this behavior?

My pump starts off with strong pressure, than after a while it loses all its pressure, I have to shut the pump off , bump my filter and re start and the pressure is strong again. Than back to the same ....any ideas?

I have a lot of small pot of egg plants around one side of the pool. My filter is really old we have this house since 2010. I had to hose it down and there was a lot of flat pieces dirt came out of filter media. I felt it with my fingers they were slimy feel to it. After hosing it down, operating pressure at 15 psi but slowly within matter of days to 30 psi. Could this be due to the 40 to 50 small pots within 2 to 3 feet of one side of the pool or is it due to old filters? Even after washes, filter media still very dirty and has black stuff in it. Anway, I have already order new 4 new filters on the way.

If it doesn't go down to zero when pool turns off it is probably broken. Tap it with your finger and see if it moves down. Just replace it as they are inexpensive.

Great video! I have 30,000 gallon SW pool with Intelliflo pump. Was running 2300 rpm and filter was showing clean psi of around 10. I bumped rpm down to 2000 and now have a psi of around 5 or 6. Does that sound normal?

Sp it’s been 3 days and my pool filter is doing great. The filter pressure is still where it was when I cleaned it. So the DE was the issue causing the filter to prematurely clog up. I used 6lbs of DE for the 6020 filter in case anyone wants to know.

The PSI is around 20 and the pressure going back into the pool is low? When we backwash the Psi go back down to 10-11 and the pressure goes up. It will only last for 10 minutes so. What could the problem be? We have a Hayward sandfilter. Thank you.

Hello, I just had my pool installed 3 weeks ago, I find that I need to backwash it every 6 days because of low flow & high psi.. example ,last night I vacummed to waste because it rained I then rinsed.. it was at 10 PSi last night and now it’s already at 19PSi I don’t have trees and a lot of debris in the pool that the would get the filter so dirty that it would need to be backwashed that quickly .... any ideas

So I talked to a friend and he stated the thinks I didn’t put enough DE in the filter. He said the filter should have about 6lbs of DE or the dirt will clog up the new filter. So this morning I removed the filter elements thoroughly cleaned them, cleaned the salt water filter again and basically started from scratch. I added the DE slowly to the skimmer and I guess I’ll see if this fixes the problem. I’ll let you know in a couple days.

I love your videos. They’ve been super helpful. We had a good deal of wind and rain and my pool is green with a lot of leaves and other debris. The psi on the filter was around 10 when I believe normal is 17psi. After cleaning the filter and adding DE, the psi is above 30. Any ideas?

If the pool was very grteen I suspect the grids are clogged with organic debris and dead algae. Backwash the filter and recharge with DE and see if that helps. If the watrer coming out of the backwash pipe is green you will need to take the filter apart and clean it again. Sometimes a few times.

Please advise what to do if the pressure gauge shows very high- at 60 in temperature of 15F. Last night was 13F and this morning the filter turned on because it’s on a timer and when I checked- it shows 60psi... I don’t know if anything inside is frozen or what to do next. Please help..

After about 7 hours it shows 15 psi... and this is a Hayward sand filter which we bought brand new about 6 months ago. The system is still off because I am afraid to turn it back on as today the highest temperature is 31F... tonight will be another below freezing night. What to do?? It is better if you run the pool during the coldest periods to avoid anything from freezing on you. Run it 24 hours if you need to.

So you mean I have no way of knowing if pipes or equipment is frozen at this point, and just turn on the system back on and let it run all night regardless of the psi reading on the sand filter gauge??..

I doubt if they are frozen now if the PSi is at 15. There was probably a blockage in the line when you first turned it on - probably the cause of the 60 PSI reading. I would set it to run at the coldest periods of the night - usually from Midnight to 8 am. This will prevent freezing. Adjust your timer to those hours if you can.

It depends on the plumbing really. But most Cartridge filters will start when clean near 20 PSI and go up to about 30 PSI. DE and Sand Filters will range from 15-20 PSI when clean . Back pressure from the return lines and pipe configuration are a factor. There is no exact number and it varies from pool to pool.

I installed an 1100 filter instead of a 1200. Is this gonna cause a problem?

Normal psi is 15 when filters are cleaned. Right now it is at 15 until I connect my vacuum Vacuum connected drops psi to 5 Is this normal? I notice a significant drop in flow when the vacuum is connected. All vacuum lines are new- no air leaks No excess air coming from returns. Vacuum moves around as usual. Anybody know what is wrong?

Sounds like an air leak. Maybe look around the pump area - a loose union or even the pump lid o-ring.

I cleaned, backwash and rinsed the filter. It’s still reading between 20 to 30. It goes down to 10 for like a minute then it shoots right back

It could be that the filter grids need to be replaced. Or their is some type of blockage in the line. Very common if you have in-floor returns

Love your videos, you have really helped me save hundreds of dollars in service cost. Currently I am trying to figure out why my pool filter PSI is fluctuating between 14 and 24 PSI over a minute time period. Any ideas? There is a distinct change in water flow sound when these fluctuations occur.

I hope you can help I did t everything right and the pressure just keeps going up or now I got it to start at 5 but then goes right up to 20 and now pool green agen the fingers have been cleaned so good inside out and 5poinds of de need help thanks mines the one with Hayward earth with the fingers that have been cleaned great for above ground pool

DE filters tend to get clogged up with algae very quickly. Try shocking your pool again to kill the algae and then when you vacuum you will need to clean the filter right after again.

@@SPL ok ya iv done that like crazy used the liquid and it turned so blue and I washed the fingers clean to pure white clean and put 5 pounds and within minutes it does up to 14psi then 20 or past and then no water comes out and the filter says up to working 50psi and if you let it go then turns pure green algie been doing this for years and still can't get it. Ppl installed it said it was used pump but we paid for new they was going to put new one in and have never came back and won't answer us back it's driving me nuts

My robot died so I have been using a vacuum to clean. Today my PSI was 5 after backwashing when it is usually 15. I cleaned out the DE from the filter and put it all back together, but can't get it to prime or go back up.

Try priming the pump from the skimmer with a garden hose. Stick the hose in the skimmer hole and wrap a t-shirt around it to get a tight seal. Turn on the hose and hold it in the skimmer hole. Have someone then turn the pump on. It should prime. Air probably got into the line.

Thanks I will try that in the morning. I tried a plunger in the skimmer where the suction is but that didn't work, either.

Also make sure if you have a pool cleaner make sure if there is a canister it is empty or clean

I’m thinking I may have a rodent or something in the pipes. But then why does the pump work fine for a while after I backwash? I’m stumped.

Hey..I hope one of you reads this.. we are new to pools and just turned our on so we can start cleaning the water.. but my sand filter pump keeps going over 50psi even though it says max 50!! I'm worried the thing will blow up on us.. I cleaned all the filters and back washed and rinsed but no success!!! What do I do?? Anyone?

Sounds like something is clogging the return line. Very dangerous.

VS pumps actually run more efficiently with a high HP. So consumption all depends on the RPM of the pump and the initial HP rating.

Check the basics like the water level in the pool and any leaks by the pump.

sounds like some back pressure. A bit high but nothing to really worry about. How is the solar returning the water to the pool? If there is a way to increase your pool return try to do that. Solar actually works best with a VS pump so you adjust down the pump speed to reduce the back pressure.

I have a B2983 2 speed ready to go if this fails I heard high speed was best for for solar,low for $ money savings.Do you agree?

Not quite ful high speed. I run the solar on my route at around 2800 RPM. Full Speed is 3450 RM. Just to limit the back pressure on the filter. With a dual speed you would have to run it on high - low speed is too low.

Turn off pump, remove the pump basket and try to spin the impeller that sits behind the basket with a flat head screw driver. Maybe debris in impeller.
