I honestly don’t think RL slaps his guitar, it sounds more like a simple scratch on muted strings while the thumb simply keeps the base. Learned from a blues man in the Sip delta.

I think with patience and steady slow practice to start this will open the gates to Hill County for whoever wants to go there. I am starting my 4th year learning guitar and making a one year commitment for 2022 to learn this style. This is a great opportunity for all of us now. So I’d say lets hit it while we can! I’ll still practice everything else like Hendrix, Sabbath, Soundgarden, Kyuss, punk, surf and especially Psychobilly!!! Practice every day……and there will without doubt be steady progress. 👍

Nice job again. You really have R.L.'s stuff down. But, one thing I can say after playing with R.L. for years is that with all do respect to all of us wanting to play in the Hill Country Blues style R.L. helped to popularize along with Junior Kimbrough, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Belfour, what they had going for them, and equal to their guitar was their ability to sing right along with their guitar playing. Even the slightest change like in R.L.'s voice relating to the notes he was playing on the guitar just helped make whatever song he was singing stronger. Many years ago I decided that though I may learn R.L.'s guitar style I was not going to perform his songs in public. I've written songs in that style many from stories R.L. told me. But, I just have to much respect for R.L. to make an attempt to copy him.

@@FeedbackGuitarAcademy Sure. You're doing a great job. R.L. didn't have a huge repertoire, and you know he didn't bother to learn more than a verse, or 2 in his songs, but what he could do with what he had was magical. Sometimes he'd pull something knew out like A BIRD WITHOUT FEATHERS, you know it was hard being older, and touring, and everyone wanting a piece of him. Good luck.

Hey man......thanks a million for this, and your other videos ....awesome tuition ! Quick question .....I'm a drummer who's been playing guitar for around 5 years. When I play this, I'm pretty happy with my interpretation ,however i find that I'm naturally using my first finger for the percussive strums on the accented 2 and 4 beats. Any tips?....stick with what comes naturally and focus on the groove ,or be persistent and use my thumb more? Anyway ,thanks again! Great video !
@FeedbackGuitarAcademy
@FeedbackGuitarAcademy 11 ай бұрын
Thanks! I say just go with what feels natural for you. Using the first finger for percussive strums is a great technique and it works really well with this style. You can try to add more thumb over time, but dont expect it to come really fast. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@jessiejenkins9817
@jessiejenkins9817 2 жыл бұрын
As you know, there are countless R.L. Burnside lessons on KZfaq. "Black Mattie" alone has several tutorials, all of them different from one another. After years of studying it, I think your lesson is the one that will finally work for me. Thank you a 1,000 times for uploading it for free. I see that other players have trouble getting the percussive click sound on beats two and four. For the time being, I strike and mute the low E and A strings with my thumb, while simultaneously flicking the open D and G strings with my index finger. It's not an easy shortcut, but it works. I just can't get that sound with my thumb alone. My love for this music exceeds my talent, but trying to play it takes my mind off my self-loathing and my tragic life. A question: What dobro/resonator do you prefer to play Mississippi Hill Country Blues with, especially on songs that don't require a slide? I'm considering a Gretsch G9200 Boxcar Round-Neck, Mahogany Body Resonator with a spider cone. I'm looking for something that does not sound like a banjo. Sorry for my long post!

Hi, Thanks for watching and commenting! I think its important to find a comfortable guitar and I think thats more important than the sound. So I have the most fun playing on my Taylor and my Gibson for open tunings. I dont have an old resonator at the moment.

@myyootube2
@myyootube2 Жыл бұрын
Kudos, this is perhaps the best effort to cop his brilliant style which I've seen. Only thing I'd say as an outside observer is that R.L. didn't really raise his hand up off the strings to SLAP them with his thumb so much as his thumb would just THWACK with a blindingly fast PUSH, through the strings. This gave his percussive dead strokes just a bit of that Guiro like scratch sound which the slap sound isn't quite accomplishing. Yes the edge of his hand which mutes at the end of the stroke had to be coming off and then closing down onto the strings, so that notes could ring in between the percussive strokes, but it appears to me that the motion he was able to do that with was just as slight as it could be. Perhaps he was the only one with the hands to do it I don't know... That scratch though man, makes me itch just thinkin' about it.

I’ve been trying this click for a few weeks, not easy at all but keep trying every day a bit and you’ll get it. I figure I’m a month away from the clean kill click strum. I did find a cheat for quiet strings: On electric guitar turn up reverb and add a quick slapback on delay and it will click like hell👍 My acoustic I tuned the fat E to D called drop D. That looser string clicks down on the frets easy and louder. As a last note, I have been taking lessons from Heath here and I’ve made more progress in three weeks than ever. Fast progress 👍
