OLD explanation on HOW DOES IT WORK?
Water in the boiler is turned to steam. The steam has a greater volume than the water so it pushes out of the boiler and down the tube. In the tube it cools, condenses and contracts so it is drawn back into the boiler and the process repeats. The action of the steam pushing into the tube pushes the existing water in the tube out the back and that drives the boat forwards. The steam condensing and contracting draws water back into the tube ready for the next push.
If your next question is "why doesn't the boat oscillate backwards and forwards due to this push-pull effect?" try blowing a candle out and then try sucking a candle out and you will see the blow is fairly directional but the suck is not.

I went to the supermarket with a magnet. Not one pop or juice can was steel. I then went to the beer store. The only steel can made was Steiger. A beer made in Austria. It worked perfectly and was tastey

Hey thanks for the tip. I had taken to carrying a cheap Poundland torch in my jacket pocket. One of those flat ones with a magnet on the back so I could test cans. In the end I gave up as I never found one.

I'm building my boiler using this technique (aka soldering), to me it looks the most reliable and durable.

Depends how hot you let it get, in truth it should only need to reach boiling point so even BluTack works but if you let them run dry they will overheat and melt solder.

A couple of coke cans would make a nice chamber. 2 of the bottoms of the cans placed one inserted into the other (plenty of alcohol stoves are made using a similar method on yt. It should be water tight enough for a put put boiler. But if not solder is cheap

All the drinks cans I have tested are aluminium so OK if you are going to use glue but no good for soldering. I even resorted to wandering round the supermarket with a magnet to check all the drinks cans 😜 Oh and solder is not cheap, it is ridiculously expensive. I haven't had to buy any for about 10 or 15 years as I had several large cobs but finally had to buy some last week. What I would call a reasonable amount was nearly £10 even the little coils were nearly £4

The sound is not necessary for it to work but it is more fun when it pops along. In many cases a stronger flame will get the boiler popping but you might melt your joints. Check the links in the video description for more videos. I would recommend any video by Daryl Foster
