What set Speed Racer apart from Disney’s live action movies is that it was earnest about what it was instead of being shy about what it was based on. Sure, it took liberties with the source material, but it still had the spirit of the OG because of how dumb it was.

Speed Racer was the first movie I ever saw in Theaters with my Dad, at 7 years old, and we've rewatched it several times since. I can definitely say this was ahead of its time, and had it come out today with better CGI it would have been amazing. The tie-in racing game I got for the Wii was also amazing, and I remember there being Hot Wheels along with the movie too. Pretty sick for a kid.

Everyone called me crazy when I said this movie was a work of art. Years later I now finally feel SEEN

Even though I never grew up with Speed Racer (2008), I watched it this year with zero nostalgic connection and it is AMAZING! It is now my favorite film of all time, it deserves more love! Truly a masterpiece I’ll never get tired watching over and over again

I’m not a film major but I really do feel like Speed Racer has one of the best closing and opening sequences in film history. The opening is the pinnacle of show don’t tell, within less then 10 minutes we’re given every bit of information we need to understand this film. Throughout this segment we’re introduced to every major character in the film, we see why racing is so important to the racer family and we watch speed go from a child idolizing his older brother to a young man rivaling if not exceeding his talent. This entire sequence gives us so much information whilst being one of the most incredible and visually stunning sequences of film I’ve ever seen. On top of that there is narrative purpose to this first race besides the introduction as it serves as a intro into why Royalton approaches the speed family. And then theres the ending of the film, I truly do not have the vocabulary for how amazing this ending sequence is. Throughout the entire movie we’ve seen speed show his skill as a racer yet he’s always been somewhat of an underdog. Yet during this final race despite having his back against a corner with every single racer being payed off to stop him from winning he is the man to beat, a demon on the track. In a cheesy but honestly profound screen speeds dad says “You think you can drive a car and change the world it doesn’t work like that” and Speed responds “Maybe not, but it’s the only thing I know how to do and I gotta do something” and I’ll be damned if he doesn’t put those words into action. Not only does speed win the race but he does it despite all the odds working against because driving is the one thing he knows how to do. Speed isn’t in it for the money or the fame he does it because he loves to, and when the flags go up and speed finally gives it his all the results are so absurd they begin to bend reality within the movie.

An interesting aspect of this film is the way it sort of reflected what the Wachowski's were going through at the time. Their success with the Matrix saw them massively elevated into Hollywood and offered many opportunities to slot into the various moulds. However, they chose to undertake this project which spoke to them and made it their own, speaking with their voice against studio meddling and the status quo. The clarity of their vision is what makes this timeless, even if it was released at the wrong time to make an initial splash.

I remember seeing Speed Racer in highschool with some friends, we were all blown away. Hell I still have the theme in my playlist. Im glad to see someone singing in its praises.

I rewatched Speed Racer recently when it was on HBO Max (it no longer is), and the entire final race is, to this day, incredible. I would argue the Wachowskis' filmmaking career peaked in that one moment as the Mach 6 roars back to life and Speed defies all sense of logic and reality to rocket past every other competitor and win the race. The visual effects, the scriptwriting, the storytelling, the editing and the music all work in tandem to create a uniquely breathtaking sequence that brings the entire film experience to an emotionally gripping climax, the likes of which we had never seen before in a movie and may very well never see again. It truly pushed the artistry of filmmaking and visual storytelling to a new level and created an unbelievable, one-of-a-kind experience that elevates Speed Racer into a work of pure excellence.

A key scene was after the Fuji race when Ben burns down met speed and he asked him if he knew he was gonna win and his response was... they always thought we hated each other...funny is it? What a perfect line to let speed know everything Royalton said was true

It’s honestly one of my favorite movies, the visuals are strange, but breathtaking, and the scene with John Goodman and Emile hirsch, always makes me tear up, great acting on their part, the entire movie, to me at least, is a comfort movie on the highest level.

This movie has a lot of nostalgia and also a masterpiece for me and it definitely deserves a remake to do it justice

I was blown away by this movie when it first came out. I saw it as everything you thought you were watching with the old cartoon suddenly made real. It is in every regard a live action cartoon with its bright colors, fantastical car racing, and over the top visuals it was a thrill to watch. The moment you saw those mercs being paid and they literally had dollar signs in their eyes I saw the true brilliance of the writing. They also did so much to honor the original material in ways I don't think anyone really picked up on. Like how Chim-Chim was always round, but no one ever acted as if there was anything odd about a chimpanzee living and travelling with a suburban family. It very much said, "This is the world Speed Racer exists in, accept it." On top of that the overarching theme of family was done in a way I thought really worked well. I even loved how they pointed to the idea of Spritle being a carbon copy of his father. It seemed to suggest to me while Rex and Speed were the drivers Spritle would be a mechanic like Pops. My youngest brother and I both agree it was a masterpiece that was tragically overlooked and rejected by a world that couldn't appreciate the genus that went into it. He blamed Iron Man for it being overlooked but I think he just couldn't blame The Dark Knight. He and my dad thought it was a cinematic masterpiece and pumped it up to the point I was expecting Jesus to come walking off the screen.

A huge key to the Pops helping Speed immediately thing is it shows how much he’s changed and how much he regrets how he handled the Rex situation.

John Goodman as Pops Racer is-- honestly the entire casting was brilliant but he was definitely a favorite of mine. "Was that a ninja?" "More like Nonja. Terrible what they call a Ninja these days..." I actually really love the slapstick elements of the ninja fight. Sparky's absolute failure at fighting, Speed and Racer X's different fighting styles; and especially the ninja backing up into Pops, getting caught in a headlock, zooming in on his WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP RING and mumbling "oh no"

I rewatch this movie over again multiple times a year. The amazing cinematography and the great characters and acting make this worth watching again and again.

It honestly was spectacular in the literal sense. There were normal scenes but the action scenes the driving and the races were a feast for the eyes, literally a spectacle. Something amazing to witness. By dictionary standards "A visually striking performance or display. An event or scene regarded in terms of its visual impact."

I remember 2008, the year I started school, and Speed Racer was the biggest thing in my life. Along with Transformers, Speed Racer took over everyone in my towns life. I just rewatched it a few minutes before starting this video. And, I can still confidentiality say, its still the GREATEST live action anime adaptation. Alita comes close, but it doesn't reach this height.

My dad had a bunch of DVDs from the original show, and growing up, he figured it would be a good idea to show me them, and he was right. I love that show, and looking back on it now, yeah sure it’s unintentionally hilarious, but I still loved the world the show built. Cut to 2008, I get home from elementary school, and my dad says that a Speed Racer movie was coming out, and we were both ecstatic. When we finally got to the movie theater, we were treated with everything we wanted and more. The world it built was so interesting and really expanded on the show’s in a way that can make a movie shine. The characters were free from their awkwardness in the show, all of the races were rough and visceral, yet so graceful, making it a fun watch. The Wachowski sisters not only caught the spirit of the original show, but ran with it into the sunset. If anything comes out of Speed Racer in the future, I hope they’re involved to some capacity. Easily my favorite movie.

There are only a hand full of movie scenes that make me emotional every time I see it. The last race scene where time slows down, and John Goodman stands up is just such a scene.

I loved the repeat of events where Rex and Speed were leaving on their own and spridle and little speed ask if they can go with him. Tugs at your heart strings alot, i wish the cgi was better. Everything else was great, a true love letter to the old show.

Whenever I feel lost, I look toward this film to fond my footing. Seeing Speed do the thing he loves no matter what obstacles get in his way is always so cathartic and inspiring.

This is one of my favourite childhood films next to Tron: Legacy I still love them both

Unironically my favourite film ever. And I've seen a LOT of films. New and old (hell all the way back to black and white and some silent films even). And I thoroughly enjoy so very many of them, from the Godfather to Into the Spiderverse. So when I say that Speed Racer (2008) stands atop the hill for me, holds a lot of meaning for me. I could write an essay about it, but this is just my humble two cents in a brief comment here, so I will condense my love of the film down to this: It is so unabashedly pure, and full of heart.

The final race: pure blitz. And yes, it was indeed a masterpiece.

It's 2023, rewatching it the second time made me realized how the niche of 'driving is making art' is so fleshed out into not only the driving and emotions, but through the speech of Speed Racer's mom and Rex, it just...*clicked*. And even better how some of the brands marketed in the movie were all tied to racing, from sparco to Yokohama tires on Racer X's car and ADVAN on Speed's MK.V.

Thought this was a fever dream for the longest time, and I'm so glad it wasn't. This and Speed Racer: The Videogame were amazing examples of their respective media

I can’t speak for anybody else, but Speed Racer is one of my favorite movies of all time. It had everything I wanted in a film: Imagination, ground breaking visuals, amazing action and “the feels.” At its release it went up against Ironman and EVERYBODY was going crazy for Ironman. I saw it and was like WTF was that? I saw Speed Racer and was instantly moved. I went on to watch it multiple times, buy it on multiple platforms and just have fond memories of the movie as a whole. Yeah Iron man started the entire MCU ( for better or for worse) but Speed racer actually inspired me.

I watched this movie as a 4th grader in 2008, in theater, with my dad. Absolutely life changing, and still appreciate every silly little detail to this day. 10/10, favorite movie of all time.

It’s so cool that this film is becoming a cult classic, what an amazing film. It just released at the wrong time, imagine if it was released in the 2010s. It would have been a hit. The story being told through camera transitions, how amazing the actors are, the passion behind the making of the movie. Yes it’s overuse of CGI at first can be overwhelming to watch, but to finally understand the ideas behind this beautiful gem of a film, it deserves a second chance into a bigger spotlight where CGI has become so much more mainstream than ever. I will forever love this movie and pray for a sequel sometime in the near future.

I've always loved this movie, I remember going to the cinema to watch it as a kid for my birthday. Absolutely worth the one hour drive there, and the cool factor of the cars is just unbeatable.

Years later, this movie is a work of art and I got junked within vehicles/automobiles.🤣 I also remember seeing an old cutout of Speed Racer in AMAZING condition at an old dealership/carshop. Man this movie shaped me as a person from an early age when I saw it in theatres. Hands down my favorite memory of a movie going experience. That being said this movie is honestly one of a kind in every way possible. To this day it will be my favorite movie of all time. I agree on the fact that it was too early to be as appreciated as it deserved. Even today we praise movies like Scott Pilgrim, but it took time to gain the well deserved popularity it has now as a cult classic. Scott Pilgrim and Edgar Wright's style in my opinion shaped the way we make blockbuster movies nowadays : James Gunn's comic adaptations, even the last two Thor movies etc. But Speedracer released two years before Scott Pilgrim. This is insane to me considering I believe Speedracer is the most boldly and masterfully comitted to this style. I am sincerely mad that we let the Wachowski sisters flop so many times because their movies were too visionnary for us and almost systematically came out 10 to 15 years too early. To me Speedracer is a masterpiece and a sad example of it. And now I'm afraid we may have lost them, Lilly said she was not interested in sci-fi anymore, which I respect but is scary. They are living legends of the cinema and I really hope they still find the will and motivation to produce/direct amazing projects.

My dad is a huge fan of the Wachowskis and grew up on MTV reruns of Speed Racer, so when this movie came out in 2008, he took out the family (including 5-year-old me) to see it at the theater. Now I gotta rewatch it.

Saw this movie 3 times in the theaters.. and once I owned it.. watched it at a minimum of 4 times on acid.. makes it even more immersive…

Just watched it the past weekend for my birthday. It was amazing, I loved every moment of it. Just pure awesomeness: the color palates, cinematography, racing scenes, and homages to the original show.

I saw this in cinema on release and it was bloody mental. My favourite scene is when the Mach 6 zooms by, leaving a still image of the 6, that is a master stroke. It gave me 'goosebumps' (ugh)

as soon as this movie came out, i fell in love with it and havent stopped loving it since. I used to come home from elementary school and watch this movie everyday to the point where my parents would get so sick of watching it with me that they just went off to do other things while i watched it. Had the game and still have the Hot Wheels with the attachable weapons and gadgets somewhere in a blue tote.

I grew up with speed racer and recently watched it on a lsd trip for those who dont know the people who made this movie definitely focused on the audience noticed after the forst race they kept making sure the viewer isnt lost or confused and youll see they would randomly get off topic then zoom into a scene or something loud and capture the attention again, amazing movie, definitely something rare

Speed Racer is hands down one of favorite movies of all time. It appeals to the kid (and some of the adult) in me that had dreams of being a racing driver. I've watched it with mother so many times over I not only lost count, but had the entire movie memorized, dialogue and all. That said, 25:20 (and everything thay followed after) still hypese up and gives me goosebumps to this day. You've hit the nail on the head; this movie is a masterpiece.

Fun fact: I was born in 2004, April of 2008 so I was four when I saw this movie and it captivated me so much that I bought a hard copy like 2 months later, then I lost it another like a day and a half later. And then give or take 6 to 8 years later I got a digital copy off of my cousin.

That line… Tears every time I watch that final scene. No other film has ever done that for me. I don’t even have to watch the whole movie. Just knowing all the context and the literal and metaphorical “drive” behind the emotions in the final race makes me audibly yell “YES!” When he crosses that line!

This movie is most definitely a masterpiece in every way possible it was one of my favorite movies as a kid if not my favorite and it still is one of my guilty pleasure movies. And I am so excited that this movie is getting the respect and recognition it has always deserved.

As a film student I can say that this is my favourite movie of all time. My favourite movie ever was basically a racing theme'd anime built around real people. This, along with Megamind, 9, and more I'm certain I'm not considering, I really think I managed to catch every modern cult classic of my generation before superheroes became the sole monomyth of filmmaking

One last thing, the finale is the one of the most moving, poetic, and thrill inducing endings I have ever seen in 30 years of watching movies. From Speed " hearing" the car, and jump starting it into a sick drift, the montage of everything he has been through and those he met, while litterally turning the race itself into a work of art like his mother told him he was capable of. I have no shame saying Every time i see this finale, I get chills, tears down my cheeks, and a satisfied smile.

I remember seeing this film in theaters when it released. Honestly loved it. I got a hat, Legos, the hot wheels cars, the game for the DS and even bought the movie for dvd.

I forgot about this film. I remember my father showing my brother and I the original series from long prior. I have not seen this movie since 2008, and I feel like it is time to rewatch it.

I know this videos been out for a year, but I had to say how much I agree, the final scene is definitely tear jerking, the climax, the moment, Speed in its biggest moment, the family building a car in 32 hours, Speed racing his absolute heart out, the Racer X revealing scene afterwards where he had his face change to further hide his identity, hell even when Speed let off in the first race to not beat Rex’s time man the movie is legendary and it deserves so much more praise man

When I was a little 5 year old boy when this came out, I loved it because I was a little immature kid and the flashing colors were enough to keep my attention. After not watching it it for at least 7 years, last year when I was 17 I rewatched the movie and was absolutely blown away by every sing aspect of this movie. This is a masterpiece that was thrown into a trash can. I sure am glad I went dumpster diving.

I think with some slight restructuring of certain scenes, this really could’ve have been a masterpiece. Particularly the Royalton monologue being interrupted by Spridle and Chim Chim is a real tone breaker for that scene, and definitely feels like studio interference over anything else, but this always remains one of my favourite films to come back to, not just for nostalgia. Also Trixie was my first childhood movie crush

All the artistic and technical qualities about this movie are just icing on the cake to what really makes it shine: The Wachowski's perfectly encapsulated the story of a child (with a sprinkling of ADHD 😛 ) who deeply understood their calling in life from a very early age but was held back by the fears of established powers, and who needed a supportive group of people to open up a path for them. The entire film revolves around that first opening scene in the classroom and everything that happens after can be tied back to that moment. So when we get to the final race and see that flashback of young Speed daydreaming in class, it transforms the usual trope of a hero racing to victory into a REAL AND VISCERAL MOMENT OF CATHARSIS for the viewer. Even the wild psychedelic visuals can represent the experience of ADHD hyperfocus where you're in such a zen-like flow that all of time and space around you becomes a blur. It is one of the greatest "kids movies" of all time, because it deeply respects our inner child and gives us permission to experience that without shame or judgement!

The moment in the final race where Speed Racer pushes his vehicle into overdrive is the best part of it, I dont exactly remember or know if this true but that remixed Go Speed Racer song playing is amazing and helps make that moment better.

I was 17 & went alone to see this to a near empty theatre & have been singing its praise ever since. Its wildly unconventional & a visual feast. It even got a pretty strong anti-corporation msg into a kids movie

Me and my dad watched Speed Racer in theaters when I was 5 years old, and a few weeks later my kindergarten had a "drive-in" movie day, where everyone got help from their parents to make a little cardboard car we could sit in at school. Me and my dad made a paper-mache/cardboard version of the Mach-5 since we had been unable to stop thinking about that movie. We were both heartbroken when come the day, none of the other kids or parents even recognized the car. To this day, Speed Racer remains my all-time favorite movie. I'm glad to see it finally getting some of the respect it deserves.

Speed Racer is my favorite movie hands down, and I'm so glad you didn't try and dissect the ending because I also feel that there are no words for it; it's too emotionally captivating. I cry every single time it ends. And Michael Giacchino is one of the best composers. The film score did an absolutely amazing job working WITH the movie. If they could replay this in theatres, I would totally go and support it lol

This movie speaks a lot to me. My life centres a lot around cars and racing. Me and my dad would wake up early to watch the qualifying sessions and races of Formula 1. I watched it in 2008 because someone in kindergarten recommended it. Still the best decision I made as a kid.

This is the movie i've probably rewatched the most in my entire life, my 4 year old self was awed by this movie, the colors, the characters, the emotions and the cars. I remember either in my crib or lying in bed watching this with my dad as often as i could, i remember recording and rewatching it as often as i could and when it expired i immediately searched for another block to record. I bought it on Prime for long trips. This movie was a huge part of my childhood and even today i still occasionally drift back towards it for a rewatch.

I was 17 when this released, loved it from the beginning. Having seen the reruns of the anime when I was a child, seeing the movie be so colorful and vibrant was awesome. The racing set pieces were so crazy and culminating in that final race was, beautiful. It was an emotional payoff, as well as just exciting, watching Speed finish and win the race. Great video!

I will always say that Speed racer is the most important movie to me. It is the movie I showed my girlfriend when we first started dating when she asked to watch my favorite film. It was the movie that carried me through hard times throughout high school and even now in college. I never would’ve thought that the little car movie That I saw in 2008 in theaters with my father would impact me as much as I had to this day. I still look back on the birthday party I had at this movie came out very fondly. It was completely speed racer themed with plates and napkins and everything and I give my parents a lot of credit for that they are amazing parents But I remember just wanting all the toys. I remember watching the movie with my friends in the living room. This movie has been with me since I was a child and now I’m a junior in college and as I watch this video all I can think about is how I want to go watch speed racer again it won’t matter how many times I see it I will always tear up when Rex leaves win pops in speed watch the GP and they’re jumping up and down and of course when his mother describes how he makes art. this movie is Art and I love it. ❤️🏎️

i was there when the movie first came out and i loved it but up till now i have only gotten to see it 2 times, only difference from back then till now is that its getting the attention that it deserves, on top of that i also agree that this film even now is still far ahead of its time. so long story short, hell yes i think its a masterpiece. plus its my fav movie of all time and one that will never be rivaled in my own opinion. I had the pleasure of seeing Speed Racer in theaters. I loved it and now watch it with my son. So much fun with exciting visuals and a surprising amount of heart.

I just wanna speak this out, I love the Speed Racer movie, I love it everytime someone talks about it being a masterpiece; because it is, Its one of the most important movies ever in my life, It has everything I care about, and my feeling for it has just increased. For little context, I LOVE Speed Racer in general, I got to grew up watching the anime and since I was a kid I watch the movie continuosly and it gives me big nostalgia. For seconds I love Motorsport, I sadly am very unconnected to do racing myself but when I play racing games or just Kart racing I just get lost, my brain stops thinking and I just start moving. This makes me love not only this movie but also Ford V Ferrari, they both talk about that feeling, we don't race for money or stupid stuff, we do it because its us, it defines us, we are driven by it. And that hits me, its me, everytime someone talks like that I feel connected, related because its what my heart feels inside. Just this feeling makes Speed Racer already a very important film to me. Then in third, the family. The second thing I love the most in this movie is how alive and connected the Racer family feels and how racing is a part of them, it kept and keeps the family alive, even after Rex's apparent death. Aside from motorsport my other favorite scene is when speed racer talks about how he and his dad were watching the end of the gp, again for my blood connection with racing but it goes farther from that, I RELATE to that, I watched GPs with my dad, its just like its represented, and then again its linked to what I said before. And at last, my last sentimental impact. What I love more is the second point I gave, the motorsport. But what really gives me the nostalgia and happiness is what happened a year ago. My parents early death because of Covid-19, they lasted and they tried to beat it but they straight couldn't. First was my father, and days later my mother. In a span of a week I had lost it all, two of the people I loved the most were just gone, all those happy moments were just the only ones I could ever do, they were no more. And at a few races from finishing the 2022 F1 championship. They never saw it, the best championship battle of the hybrid era. After getting over the sadness I can now reflect on this movie which I already cherished now meant the double. These all three aspects makes Speed Racer one of the most important movies in my life, and as of today I keep watching it almost daily, and well that's all from me and I just wanted this to be here. Have good lifes you people!

When you go against realism in movies, you create true art. And Speed Racer pulled it off beautifully.

This is LITERALLY my childhood movie and the fact that people are bringing it up Now blows my mind

There are so many scenes in this movie that make me tear up / give me chills. It has so much heart in it. The monologue from mom racer reminds me of something my mom would say… gets me every time

I have both Racer X and Speed Racer's cars and I played the PS2 game a lot with my brother and cousin. It was one of the most fun film and franchise I've ever witness
