Hello!
This is the time of year where people think about all of their best books of the year, and so I've done something a little different. Since I don't tend to read many new releases or popular fiction books, but I do have to sell them when I'm working, I figured I would make a recommendation video of translated fiction that I think you might like if you enjoyed these other popular titles.
Books Mentioned:
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman:

I hope you will check out some of these books, and let me know your thoughts if you do get around to reading them! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, then be sure to give it a thumbs up to let me know, leave a comment with your thoughts, and as always you're more than welcome to subscribe.
See you next time for another video!

I loved this Matthew, the customers at your shop are so lucky to have you! I was going to buy my sister The Seven Deaths and am now tempted to get her Grotesque as well so thank you for this 😄

Thanks so much, Jo! If your sister likes rather dark books then she absolutely will love Grotesque (at least I hope so!) definitely worth a read for many people in my opinion and I'm not even the biggest fan of thrillers! Haha

Your videos are truly works of art, such gorgeous editing! I could say that to every video but this one struck me particularly! I’ve been loving translated fiction this year and enjoyed hearing you speak about the comparisons here! Great idea!

I thought you might appreciate it! I was partly tempted to also talk about A General Theory of Oblivion as an alternative to Eleanor Oliphant, but I figured I should mention a book I hadn't talked about before! Hahaha

ugh all your videos have the best intros. also i loved this idea of giving alternatives to popular books!! all these books you recommend here sound so fascinating and the way you talk about them makes me want to buy and read all of them so you’re doing your job as a bookseller really well hahahah i haven’t been too interested in elinor oliphant but the lady and the little fox fur sounds much more intriguing to me. might actually check that one out at some point. the nakano thrift shop also sounds like a book i might like, putting that one on my tbr as well. thank you for this video, you put some books that look fascinating on my radar here!!

I really loved this! Listening to how people recommend one book based on another book intrigues me to no end. I think it reveals a lot about how the recommender thinks, reads, sees the world, and connects ideas. Super fun! I hated Eleanor Oliphant, but you made the alternative sound interesting to me. And I really want to read My Tender Matador even more now! I adored Three Things About Elsie, but I had wanted to read the other anyway from when I saw it on your goodreads or maybe in a video? Somehow it ended up on my TBR, which I am incredible selective about! And I am going to get around to Grotesque soon. I still have trouble with the cover(s) but you make it sound soooo good. One day soon!!!

well... there I was writing a really long comment to you and lo and behold, I lost it all! Hahaha Thanks for your lovely comment though! You're totally right about learning about someone's thinking/reading styles by how the match and recommend other books - I had never considered it before. I think you'd enjoy My Tender Matador, I think more people need to read it, but I am a little biased there! Haha And realllyyyyy you need to read ALL of Natsuo Kirino's books.. no pressure or anything but you have no excuse not to ;) Hahaha

I've no idea why but I loved the music in the intro to this! Some sort of mysterious fantasy scene popped into my head with it ahaha. I definitely want to read more translations, so I was intrigued about this video. I can imagine the Nakano Thrift Shop becoming just as popular as the bookshop books I keep seeing around if just enough people started talking about it. It seems like the sort of slightly eclectic collection of stories and people's love of people-watching that is lowkey popular nowadays!
@mcs-books9075
@mcs-books9075 5 жыл бұрын
Would you perhaps say the music translated an idea from my brain into your very own?! Hahahaha... ok that was really cheesy, but I'm glad you liked it, I spent a lot of time finding the perfect piece to match the tone of the video! I think Nakano Thrift Shop could be loved by a lot of people, and in a way, there was a lot of buzz about it when it first came out on BookTube, but alas, I feel it needs to be put out there even more, haha! I can totally see you getting into translated literature, have you ever tried anything by Isabel Allende? I think she might pique your interest!

@@mcs-books9075 Smooooooooth ahahaha I haven't read Isabel Allende yet, but I do have her House of Spirits (I think it's called) on my bookshelf. I picked it up at random a few months ago but it seemed a bit dense to read alongside my uni reads, so I haven't read it yet. There's a fair few translations I'm wanting to read, I definitely need to crack on and get to them.

I didn't really read much in translation this year, but I really want to read more books in translation in 2019 and your channel is a goldmine. I'm curious about so many of these and it's interesting to hear the reasons you've made the connection between the popular English books and the translated works.

I can definitely recommend checking out Pushkin Press, Europa Editions and Peirenne Press as some wonderful publishers who put out a really great range of translated fiction from all sorts of places - they're definitely some of my favourite publishing houses! Do I also remember that you are able to read in French? Do you read a lot in other languages, or have I misremembered?
@nicoleisheretolearn
@nicoleisheretolearn 5 жыл бұрын
Ooh! Fantastic! Thanks for the publishers 👀 Yes, that's right; I generally try to read French books in the original text. Only French though. I'd love to be able to read in a few other languages too. Maybe some day... /sighs wistfully knowing full well she probably won't put in the effort to achieve this/

This was wonderful - what's your shop like, day to day? Lots of customers? Lots of familiar customers?
@mcs-books9075
@mcs-books9075 5 жыл бұрын
At the moment we're getting a lot more customers than usual because of the Christmas rush - but we do definitely have a cast of regulars who come in, we know them by name and usually chat, it helps that we're in a small town so I'll usually see them around elsewhere too! I think one of my biggest surprises was how little people would ask booksellers for recommendations, I think I had this dream-like idea that I would be on the floor always recommending a wide variety of books to everyone, but nope, we have to keep our eye out for the people looking at lists and whatnot on their phones and usually they're the ones who ask for a little help - but I do have a few customers who enjoy my recs!

What a great idea for a video! I’m reading more and more translated books (currently ‘Summer Before the Dark’ by Volker Weidermann). One pairing I can think of: don’t read The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah; instead, read Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky. ;)
