►Worn-out bushings and ball joints in the front end of your Porsche 997 make some of the most noticeable differences to your car's handling. You might not notice it right away as it happens gradually over time; however, you will notice a massive immediate difference once they're replaced.
Porsche made replacing the front bushings and ball joints an easy task by incorporating them into new control arms, and best yet, they made them affordable. No more having to press out the old bushings and press in the new ones with this design.
Michael Hidalgo, FCP Euro's resident DIY expert, takes us through the step-by-step process of replacing the front control arms on your Porsche 911 997 at home in your garage or your driveway.

there's a plastic clip on the left front coffin arm which attaches to a switch for cars with a headlight leveling system. if you don't remove it prior to using the ball joint separator, it may break.

Excellent tutorial, used it to rebuild the front end on a 2005 997 Carerra S. Totally agree with your comment about corrosion, as I had to cut the lower arm bolts out with a reciprocating saw. Great presenter, authentic, very clear and concise - good job!

How long did this job take you?
@richardsavage9248
@richardsavage9248 Жыл бұрын
@Sylvester M To cut the bolts, about an hour each side. I used a reciprocating saw with a Bosch metal blade, lowered the arm as much as possible, and then placed the blade to cut between the lower arm's in-built large bonded washer and the arm itself. I made two cuts to each bolt so that the arm would slide out. Go slowly and carefully to make sure you don't damage the subframe. Be prepared to clean up a fair amount of aluminium and steel filings afterwards.

Does the Meyle LCA have a steel insert similar to the Porsche arm? Or is it aluminum?

When torquing the nut on the front lower forward control arm to coffin arm, do you need to torque this nut at ride height also similiar to the coffin arm inner bolt/nut?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro Жыл бұрын
Hi Blkferrari335, not necessary for that one, but if you have a ride height set already, will not hurt.

When torquing the control arm to sub frame bolt, you raised the control arm with a jack prior to torquing it down. Is that enough? I always thought the weight of the car needed to be on the control arm prior to torquing?

Is this the same for 996? Also is the process any different between a C2 and a C4?
@pjay3028
@pjay3028 2 жыл бұрын
It's the same process on a 996 but you need different control arms at the front. I think it's the same on the 4 but there'll be less room to manoeuvre the tools above the ball joint.

It's the rubber bushings that wear. I don't know enough to see how worn the "old" one was. But it could also be that this was more of a preventative or maintenance repair before the bushing was completely worn.
