Join us Wednesday, April 26, at 8 PM ET, for another episode of Tech Tactics Live. We welcome Nathan Merz to the show to discuss 911SCs. This is the show for anyone looking to learn more about air cooled 911’s, why the 911SC is such a popular choice, what to look for when shopping for one and what it’s like to live with one. In the studio we’ll have a 1983 911SC to show viewers what makes the car so special.

Owned a 911SC for five years, loved every minute of it. Did 80,000 miles in that five years. It had 150,000 on it when I bought it in 2000. During that time, total cost for non standard services, was $300 - replace fuel pump and remove starter motor to strip down clean reassemble the solenoid - sometimes would not engage when the engine was at operating temperature. Miss my 911SC. The first of the great 911s with its power brakes and aluminum crank case. Mine was Red cos red cars go faster!

08:37 Thank you for the positive comment on CIS. 83SC owner here since 2015 and after rebuilding my entire fuel system (and engine) it does not skip a beat. I have a ton of CIS videos and articles on my YT and blog if anyone is interested.

As a proud 1983 SC owner, I totally agree about the 915 trans--it provides one of the most analog and most distilled driving experience provided by a 911. You're more directly connected to the car where driving isn't just an action it's, as Nathan mentioned, an interaction. I also agree with Nathan's sentiments about the '80 Weissach spoiler--it is so good looking!

Three things: 1. I really enjoyed this vid. Thank you! 2. We've owned our 1982 911SC since Oct 1989. It never received the pop off valve or the updated chain tensioner updates. I had it repainted in the original black back with clear coat (mistake) back in 1998 but it didn't last even ten years in the Geotgia sun. In the early 2000's, was having trouble keeping it running and no one on the face of the earth could figure out why (I'm going with leaky airbox). I lost interest, and it sat. Along about 2010-11, my wife wanted to get it going and demanded I get it repaired (after all, its her car). Well, the resto got out of hand and now she's 90% finished with the finish line in site. It turns out it's not possible to pay resto folks thousands and thousands of dollars and have them (A).follow your instructions, and (B). finish their work in any reasonable time frame (we're talking years), so I'm pushing it over the finish line myself. Every nut and bolt has been refurbished so that I can legitimately claim zero miles. Which brings me to... 3. The odometer on most (all?) 911SC cars stops working after a few years. The reason is a factory odometer gear disitergrates. Its a relatively easy fix, but because of this, the mileage showing cannot be believed on any 911SC car, except, of course, mine. Bah, ha, ha!

Got my 83 SC Targa , factory whale tail in 84. 7 n 8 Fuchs. Pop off, H4, hydro tensioners. LA car. Vegas summer desert 120F runs, buck 25 all day, oil temp WNL. Water cooled cars overheating lined up. Ski trips Vail blizzards, toasty heaters. Engine heat melts snow ice rear wheel wells, Front require intermittent manual clearing personnel preference, not required functionally. I’ll take the car anywhere and never worry about mechanical issues❤❣️

This is a great video that I've been waiting for. I own an Euro 1980 SC that's Carrera white with Pacha interior. It's a sunroof delete car without factory foglights. Previous owners removed the air conditioning and I didn't expect AC when I was a buyer, nor do I care that its missing.

I have a Grey Market ‘77 Carrera 3.0 with the original CIS with no Pop Off Valve. It was updated to Carrera chain tensioners sometime in the past.

Nathan’s preference for a “poverty” SC with limited options is spot on. 40 years later, such a car would be more reliable because it would have fewer things that could fail.

I have a 77’ euro car that was handed down to me from my dad. He imported it in the early 80’s… I pretty sure he never did anything to it to “convert” it. He just drove it lol. It has really been driven since the early 90’s. Some people have told me it’s an “SC”, but it’s a 77, so basically I don’t know what it is. It’s brown, with cork interior… has a whale tail (original from factory) as like I said my dad was the second owner, and the only thing he ever did to it as far as “mods” was disconnecting the AC for track days.

I was really looking forward to a similar video to the mid year and 3.2 Carrera format with just Nathan and his wise words. Those are amazing content. Still a great video, but not to the very high standard of those mentioned.

I own a 83 SC. The serial number is one of the last 10 built in 83. Owned it since 1996. Did the retro fit of the oil pressure feed timing chains and installed a new oil cooler. Got rid of the trombone cooler. Great car.. the best Porsche next to my 2014 991. SC is for sale if anyone is interested. White with brown interior.

My take on RoW cars from someone that owns one (83SC cab). All things being equal I have a hard time thinking that the car I own that was built for the German market and originally purchased by someone in Germany and then imported 6 months later in to the US is inferior to a US car by nature. I understand that many of these cars (depending on the state they were federalized in) could of had less than proper and correct modifications made to them when they were imported and therefore are of a lesser value. When you compare a car built for the US market vs. one built for the euro market there are many differences, the most notable being horsepower, no CAT and minor transaxle differences. That said after owning a RoW car since 2012 I would have a hard time parting with it to move to a car built for the US market. Cosmetically, have H4 headlights (much better than sealed beam) along with the much smaller bumper impact guards make the car much nicer looking as well as safer to drive at night. Just my 2 cents.

Warren, I agree that ROW cars can be very desirable, I was giving the historical perspective on why the long held belief that they were somehow lesser came about. Yes nothing better than a 204hp later ROW SC with small rear bumperettes, H4’s and maybe a more unusual cloth interior!

As always, thank you oh, wise one! How difficult is it to import a vintage R.O.W. 911 from Germany/Europe? Annnnd of course I'd need to have an SC in Apple (Daphne) OR Fern Green. #rennbownerd

Hi Nathan, You mentioned that you preferred the 1978 SC model year over the 1983 model year, but didn't go into why. Could you expound on that, please? Thanks!

I think one of the reasons might be that the CIS is a simpler system compared to the later models (no Lambda )

I am not sure if the guy's ownership year is correct, or he fumbled about the timeline. He said he owned the 944 in 1986 (or 1986 model year), and bought the 911SC which is 3 years older, then it should be 1983 911SC. If he owned the 944 is 1984 then it's possible to be 1981 SC, but he said he owned the 911SC since 1981 and bought it from the original owner, then it's not possible since 944 944 1st year is 1982, so he couldn't possibly sold the 944 then bought the 911 back in 1981. Unless he messed up meant 924, but the timeline still don't match.

I caught that too…I’m guessing he bought it in ‘91 and is just off a decade. Happens to all of us when we’ve owned these cars for a long time.
