If your Porsche 914 seats are ripped, these next two episodes are for you. In part 1, we'll strip the seats down and install new mounting hardware from 914 Rubber to get them ready for new upholstery. Even if you're going to send them out to a professional shop, it pays to take the seats down and prep them yourself.

Ian, great video. I've done several of these through the years. IF, and I mean IF the riveted bolster holders are not rusty and are going to stay on the seats, you can easily just apply downward pressure on the wire with a flat head screwdriver, and it will stretch the vinyl enough to simply slip the wire under the pointy hook. Works great if you make a mistake and need to re-attach, you don't always have to drill them out.

Thanks man. Yep. The last set I did, the barbs were all pristine and I didn't need to replace any. Maybe I should've made that clearer....

Thanks for a great video. I have been using a seat cover over a pillow for a while now since I could not find any information on redoing the seats. I learned a lot and am ready to take the plunge.

I ordered a tan upholstery kit from 914 Rubber for my early interior ('71), and will be getting around to doing this somewhere in the near future (I'm hoping). As always, thanks for another informative video.

The seats in my old Comet need re doing. Nice video. Your seats didn't look that bad though.

Yeah, they weren't terrible, but since I'm restoring a bumblebee, I didn't want any rips at all on the seats...

Great Video . looking forward to the next. . I'm wondering that if a shop is going to do the covers . Wouldn't it be best to let them disassemble so they can see how it goes together (assuming maybe they haven't done 914 before) and does anyone make pre cut and shaped foam?

I guess it depends on the shop ;) But the techniques for upholstering these seats are pretty common and would be obvious to someone who does this for a living. I also think this is something that's definitely doable as a diy with good results, as you'll see in the next video. Not sure of anyone who makes replacement foam. That's definitely something a professional would be able to do, as they stock foam in various sizes and thicknesses, and have the tools to cut and shape them.

I have been asked to do many upholstery projects. No two cars or trim levels are the same so I would totally agree to let the upholsterer disassemble. Any cost savings of disassembly time will easily be recouped during the speedier reassembly. I’ve gotten to the point that if someone else disassembles anything - seats, machines, appliances, motors, etc. I just won’t mess with it. It takes way more time($$$ to a paying customer) and stress than if I take it apart. Just my perspective and YMMV. Great video and great information!

awesome video i enjoy every single one your making. keep up the good work! how did you actually remove the seat from the car. cant find any information or video. thanks again
@IanKarr

Thanks, Phat! Removing the seat is easy. You just have to reach into the track and push (or lift...I can't remember) on the little metal tab which keeps the seat from coming off the tracks. When I put the seats into the bumblebee I'll shoot some video of that...

Ian, trying to find the set hardware kit you mentioned for the seats. Can't find it on either link. It's early so I might just need more coffee!

Is there a seat removal part?
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 4 жыл бұрын
Tough to get a camera in there ;). Removing the seat just requires reaching under and into the track and moving the metal flange so that the seat will slide fully forward and off the tracks.
@randyfleet9968
@randyfleet9968 4 жыл бұрын
yeah, just grab that seat adjustment handle, pull the seat fully forward. Then you need to stick a screwdriver up the inside seat track, I think, lift up the 'catch flange' and pull it forward and out!
