A classic motoring film focusing on the baby Porsche - the black sheep of the stable, the 924. The car owes its roots to a Volkswagen / Audi tie-up, and its badge to the world oil crisis of the late 1970s.
Whether you're in the 'it's a real Porsche' camp, or the other one...a Porsche for under £4000 is not to be sniffed at, and when you watch this film you'll understand why.
This film is created using iOS technology for iPhone, and scripted, filmed and edited by Paul, presenter of rally and other motoring-based TV shows.
For more information on the Porsche 924, including comprehensive history, buying guides and some of the best examples for sale visit www.porsche924.co.uk.

Thanks for this great review! I've always loved the 924, eversince I first laid eyes on it. I really like it's classic sportscar lines. So much more elegant than the 911, imo, which was an old-fashion concept, even back then (it looked like pre-war VW Beatle, had a rear air-cooled engine with all the weight in the back, which actually made it a dangerous car, if you weren't an experienced driver). It was the late '70s, I was a kid and I decided I would once own my own 924! I have had my second one (a bright red ('Guards Red') '81 NA, with a targa sunroof) for 8 years. Drove it as my daily car for a number of years (now driving the family Volvo ; ). And though work certainly wasn't always fun, driving there and back home in my 924 was always a treat! It's true that driving this car will put a smile on your face! I sometimes read that some people don't like it very much. But imo that's mostly very insecure people, who think they need a certain car to gain other people's respect, or people who don't know very much about cars, in the first place and certainly haven't ever driven a 924. Cause this friendly little sportscar will quickly win you over. Personally, I've never had any negative comments irl, ever. Friends, colleages, clients, people at petrol statios, garages, parking lots, everybody just really likes it's retro, sporty looks (women love it!). Parked next to my boss's new 80.000 Euro BMW, my bright red 924 would still get all the attention. It's funny though, nowadays many people don't even know this model existed. But I guess that's because it's becoming a rarity. Unlike the 911. Right now my 924 is enjoying the quiet life in my garage, waiting for me to save up for a well deserved complete restauration. : )

I just bought an 87 924s today and I love it! This car has created an entire different category of love for a car, mostly because it has a style and feel different from my other loves. My everyday drivers are an 87 XJS V12 and an 85 Corvette. The Jaguar fills a new driving "palate". My first love (the Corvette) is my "go to" when I want to less than comfortable behind the wheel, a drive strictly for a V8 powered 80's driving mood. The Jag is a perfect step away when I want to experience the torque and horsepower of the Vette (slightly less of course) but in a saloon style with elegance and luxury 80's driving mood. I bring this up because the 924 created a new "palate", one the I did not know I had. This new mood of driving is when I want to feel in complete control of the vehicle I am driving and equally as important is the sound that this 4cyl makes. I am in love with this sound. Of course the "Porsche" badge helps as well. I am surprised but thankful that can be many types of driving moods to assist in never getting bored behind the wheel.... Great video. I am a subscriber for sure.

Absolutely love this Porsche. Among the best looking ones. The mags on your 924 are the originals and they look best. The only drawback to the 924 is that the engine was underpowered. 2.5 or 3.0 liter engine would have been better.

Thank you for the post! I been rebuilding one of the very first 924's ever created and for the life of me, I cannot understand why Porsche purists give this car such a bad rap. If Liquid cooling and mechanical injection was such a confusion or bad idea, why did they use it on 911's? Porsche owes a great deal to the 924 and would not exist today without this car.

Snob appeal, having mere plebs being able to own one is diluting the brand in their view. Whatever, these kind of people are idiots. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery; the Japanese made two almost carbon copies of the 924 aimed it the same market (the Mitsubishi Starion & Mazda RX7). So purists, did they do that because they are absolutely clueless about making cars and the 924 is such a worthless piece of crap?

Actually I stepped out of my Saab 9-5 Aero (HOT) which spanks the 924 in a straight line & found a roundabout- I tell you it was a blast. I kept looking for roundabouts in my short drive of the 924. Fast as such is easy. Go think why people love the MX-5? My Saab is far nicer on a motorway yet this car is simple fun.

These classics don't have to be, they have to feel. Doesn't matter if it is an Alfa Romeo Giulia or a Puma GTE. To put in perspective: a 1972 Giulia is as fast as a 2011 Fiat 500.

My son and I just found a 2000 Audi A6 & 1979 Porsche 924 package deal - $4,000 for both. And they both run! The old Porsche better than the Audi (which needs a rear transmission seal replaced). We came here to check out the old 924 porches before I even bother to take the drive out to look & I'm sold! Thanks for the great info. I plan on doing a full restoration on the Porsche. The Audi is now the afterthought car. It will sit until I'm done with the Porsche.

Your 924 is a beauty....especially your interior. Though....your steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car!! Although I’m 65, my car’s nimble near 50-50 weight distribution handling....still never fails to bring the “smiles with the miles”.....uh, in your case.....kilometers! Bravo-Zulu, sir.....nice introduction video to the water-cooled front engine cars that--you are correct--saved Porsche’s “arsch”!!

Hey I’m having a no start issue as well on my 1978 924, I’ve replaced the faulty ignition coil (resistance measurements were off spec) however still no start, but I’ve noticed there’s 2 ballast resistors before the coil wich take the voltage down, I’ve measured them and the 1st one takes the voltage down from 12v to 8v and the 2nd one takes it down from that 8v to like 5.4V. This seems strange to me, as people say the coil needs 12v, do you think I should remove those resistors?

924 is pretty good on fuel, average about 28mpg vs 944's 23mpg. nice handling car pretty quick, not much goes wrong, non interference engine so should the Campbelt snap, just fit another 'quite cheap and easy to do or get done for you' parts like the clutch are not to expensive either unlike the 944 where the kit alone will set you back £500. they don't suffer the same rust issues as 944s, classic car insurance easily obtained, they are well built, reliable, cheapish to run and repair should anything go wrong.

What year is this car? I'm confused. It's missing the side markers by Schwinn, of the early version, yet sounds like the 2 liter, has 4 bolt (early version) wheels and the interior is early version, but the spoiler appears to be off a 931 or more likely 944. ... Wish your video showed more details including an open hood view. :-) The late '80s 924S variants had a reduced scale spoiler, updated interior (like the post 1985 1/2 944s), phone dial wheels and still not enough power. They were still beautiful cars. I do miss my admittedly evil 931.

Ok... as a German I have to point out that it's pronounced "PorschE" ... the E is NOT silent.. :P With that out of the way: The engine was also used in the VW LT - a delivery van not unlike the Ford Transit. That's why they called it the "van engine" in the Top Gear cheap Porsche challenge. Still: I always liked this car. A school-mate's mom had one when I was about 10 years old or so, and I still remember being driven around in it, thinking I was in the coolest car on the planet.. ;) Re Appreciation... not so sure about that. The super-rare Carrera GT version and such are already up there in the 6-figure range, but the rest? They simply produced too many of these cars and they are *still* underappreciated (IMO) - even though the 924/944 are more advanced in some ways than their contemporary 911 siblings. But hey.. so much the better for us normal people. Both the 944 and 924 are classic Porsches you can actually buy for used-car prices - and which won't break your bank-account with huge maintenance bills.

My father has revived an old 924. He just likes it's rarity thesedays. I'm a fan of the intended replacement models and totally agree with Clarkson's jokes about the "911/Beetle." Shame they never took off ie 924, 944, 928, 968. Would've evolved nicely. So I'm no Porsche fan. I'll never afford a sweet 911. Re badges Mercedes makes nice affordable cars now ie an approved used. We can all drive a nice and not ancient Merc, BMW or Audi. Porsche. 'An SUV company that occasionally builds sportscars.'
@Scouty66
@Scouty66 5 жыл бұрын
The engine is not a van engine. It is a re engineered Audi 100 engine that is descended from the Mercedes W118 that never made it into production. However, VW and Daimler- Benz replaced the DKW in 1965 with a new car they called the Audi and which employed the W118 engine modified to suit the new car. When VW bought Daimler-Benzs share in Auto Union they took over the Audi marque and all that went with it. Eventually the engineering and further development of the W118 power unit spawned the front engine VW's. The engine in the Porsche 924 was exclusive to that car and it has components that are not found in VW's or Audis. For more info about the Mercedes W118 search Google.

You accept the good/bad pronounciation as you accept the dumb SUV company the sportscar legend was built on. The engine is a weak spot, especially since I'm an American and we got a really shitty 100 HP tuning while the rest of the world got 125 HP. You need to keep the RPMs above 4,000 to get any sort of good response from the throttle. The rear end almost never slides out, even if you try, so it's not good for powersliding/drifting; however, because of that, it turns like it's on rails and you can always be sure that you'll nail any corner at just about any speed. The car gets screwed hard in straightaways, 0-60 MPH in about 9.4 seconds, but if you throw some tight corners into the mix, the car really comes alive and will leave most cars in it's taillights.

It's a great car for the price has a nice interior and body in my opinion and you know your driving a actual "Porsche" and with a couple of upgrades to the engine and a bit of nitrous you will have a beast car and you can race any faggot in a Honda or something like that and win lol good first car man.

You might have one already, if not you should. Got one as my first. Its a Euro spec one (The US ones do have less power, if you are not in the US you should be fine) its fast enough. Must remember there are not many safety features. It is very low compared to other normal cars but I got used to it after a week or two. Its still my daily driver and I would not trade it for anything other than a newer Porsche. I do recommend getting a service manual as it is an old Porsche so paying someone else to do small jobs is pretty expensive, better to do them yourself. Hope this helps someone.

I'm not 100% but I believe actually vw asked Porsche to design a car for them using some of their parts bin. VW backed out of an upmarket sports coupe due to an oil crisis and Porsche struck a deal to make it themselves. So originally it was going to be a vw developed by Porsche. Vw spotted how successful it was so brought out the scirocco.

***** The MK1 Scirocco is becoming a rare classic with a pretty decent price tag, the MK2 (I have the GT2) isn't quite there yet though, mine is a 2 owner, 100% structurally sound car that has never seen a welding torch and it would still struggle to hit £2000. I am thinking of getting a 924s but I don't know if another 2 plus 2 would be a good idea.....

1:53 what is that? That is not the sound my 924 makes when I start the engine... you said it's capable to put a smile on your face but this example doesn't fit that at all. I was blasted the first time because I didn't expect the little 924 to sound like a monster compared to it's looks and status but it totally does. It's no 928 but it still makes people at junctions turn around when you take off
