Famous racer and tv-personality Sabine Schmitz pits her personal 997 GT3 RS against the new 991 GT3. While there has been countless reviews on the new 991 Sabine's opinion matters. Having more than 20.000 Nurburgring km in her personal 997 Taxi car and racing a 911 GT3 R in the VLN championship she is the most qualified person to tell us if the new GT3 has lost it's edge.

What are you talking about? Sabine Schmitz is a sweetheart. During my European vacation a while back, I made the car nut pilgrimage to the Nurburgring and was fortunate enough to be able to take a ride around the track with Sabine herself in her 'Ring Taxi. As she was calmly asking questions about myself while she was taking some corners almost completely sideways (on some corners, the track was coming at me faster through the passenger side window than the windshield), and when I told her I would later be taking a few laps of my own around the 'Ring in a rented 911 GT3, she gave me great tips on how to take that high-speed left kink before the almost 180 degree right hand sweeper near the end of the first sector, and where to aim the car for a perfect dive into the Carousel and the mini Carousel that comes later. She was so nice. Anyway, the new GT3 is definitely quicker in a straight line than her 997, but her 997 is probably a lot quicker around the 'Ring for obvious reasons. Her 997 is a full on GT3 class car pretty much. I think it would take the new GT3 by at least 15 or 20 seconds, if not more.

well the car she is showing in the video is her ring taxi and not a gt3 class car. Look up frikadelli racing in the internet and you will see her gt3 class car. I would discribe that 911 in the video more like a ring tool. her race car is a newer gt3 r. this right here is the street version of the gt3 r and his brother. (rsr)

Hannes Schneeball Oh, I couldn't tell. Back when I went to the 'Ring during my European vacation and rode with her in her 'Ring Taxi, she was still using a BMW M5.

Sandra Rios that ring taxi is by another guy. The m5s are sponsored by bmw and that whole thing is run by a company. Her porsche is just hers and run by her racing team. So she drives 2 ring taxis.

Hannes Schneeball I just know when she took me around, and I was fortunate enough for it to be her who took me around because she's sort of a hero of mine since I saw her on Top Gear UK, it was in an M5. Other than that, I don't know who runs what cars. And her advice was very helpful when I went around a couple times in the rented 911 GT3, especially that one high speed left-hand kink I was talking about earlier. And even with her advice there were some hairy moments in that car. Advice only goes so far, and I consider myself an amateur to intermediate driver (like on track days I am always in the passing without indicating group), but man the call it "The Green Hell" for a reason. Some of the camber changes on some of the sections and the bumps can really catch people out. I can understand why so many people have given up the ghost driving around the place.

Sandra Rios Do you do competitive driving. Because if you do not I would highly recommend it to you as you will increase your skill levels doing this. There is a cost level for everybody.

991 its beautiful and looks way bigger than the gt3 997 its a shame it is only pdk, I would take the 997 just beacuse of the manual transmition.

If I the had money, I would definitely buy the older 997, just because of its manual. Faster doesn't always translate to more fun, or a better driving experience.

The difference between the 991.1 GT3 and the 991.1 GT3 RS is nowhere nearly as severe as you might think. From 0-100 it’s only 0.2 seconds and the RS has a 5km/h lower top speed.

Engine is a testament to reliabillity after 20k km round the ring. Pity manufacturers cant put more effort into producing sharper focused and affordable sports cars...

I was hoping to hear more about Porsche's psychological shift from pure analog to pure digital. Pdk, 4 wheel steering, electric steering should all combine to make a very different driving experience. Tire technology also made some large leaps since the last gt3 rs.

I know the 991 gt3 is a great car but I would still preferred the 997GT3RS. I want to able to see the motor and a manual gearbox is just more involved to drive the car. PDK is lighting fast gear changing but I can get bored.

what to expect in these comments: (1) "even though 991 is clearly better vs a 997 RS (!), the 997 is better because it has a stick" (2) comments about the 2 991 GT3 cars that caught on fire. yes 2 cars. (3) no one who actually has driven or owned both of these cars speculating about how they *know* which is better. If you watch Getawayers 991 GT3 review, he says it best -- if you haven't driven the 991, you can't make a qualified opinion.

PDK Vs 6-speed. Not much of a comparison. Dragtimes had a video of a stock Cayman S with PDK out running a 911 with tiptronic.

"Sounds like the engine will explode". Well as far as I understand, quite a few of them did actually. Which is why no owners of the 991 GT3 has really been able to use their car untill now because of the recall, where the whole engine has to be changed :-)

This video is the first glimpse of proof that manual transmissions are going way - boo! Watch the video, she even forgets to shift and lets the car do the work. Maybe it will be different on the track, but doubtful, this is the downward spiral. Oh, and if you really want to drag race the too cars, you need a 5-10 mph/kph rolling start to negate the damn LCS!

I could never go back to a manual, had an SMG M3 and now a DCT M3. Had a go in manual version this weekend and to be honest it just holds you back. Way too many negatives compared to dual clutch i am afraid. A manual on this car would be like driving wearing wearing flip flops :)

60 kilos extra as it's packed with an awful lot of tech including 4WS, a long list of driver aids an automatic gearbox (most owners will have it in D full-time by week 2) and no more racetrack-refugee engine. Is there absolutely no niche at Porsche that doen't have to be made accessible and dumbed down for the sort of person that really shouldn't be encouraged?

I prefer a Ferrari with steering wheels paddles shift! The manual shift is only for little boring citycars or for old cars, not for these modern supercars, because the manual gearbox it's a very slow and old system!! Dual-clutch is the best for these cars!!

PDK and DC trans along with Sequential transd cars are great as race cars but for the enthusiast who buy these as touring cars want the manual because your more connected to the car which is a much more rewarding experience not to mention it's a huge theft deterrent. Most people who buy these cars don't race them they cruise them. If i was racing a 911 i'd want the PDK but a car that i drive on the roads for fun i'd take the Standard Trans everytime

Some people like sequential systems some do not. But when it comes to sports it generally is preferable to have sequential.

bighands69 Depends if you are racing or just having fun. On the road, a manual is way more fun. If you are going for lap times and only lap times, that is the only time i will say take the SMG.

It does have paddle shifts as well as auto PDK. PDK is ever so slightly quicker.

Alvin Singh Sha has the fastest lap time for a non turbo on the Nurburgring (7:09) but she is not part of a professional racing team with millions in the background and a full scale race support team. Her husband is nearly her only sponsor - he is not poor, but not a billionare.

Yes,the 911 family have always been beautiful cars,the caimen & boxter have charm but the cayenne & the panamera are an abomination,ugly like a lumbering BMW or Audi,they have the stereotypical German style.
