really really great tips and advice, Ive had my 981 around 6 months, and come back to this a few times - just ordered some ppf for around the rear wheel arches - and the rubber to go around as mine I noticed is getting ripped up just the same (back rear wheel arches just under - and yes you cant see it - but it feels like its getting shredded - and my concern is it will just get worse and worse) - ordered a few different sizes to see if I can cover up more to prevent the damage.

Some of the advice goes for all cars, specially because we in the U.K. have too much salt in the air, in the roads during winter and so on and people don’t really wash the underneath of the cars. My Boxster S 987 gets washed once a month religiously and again if I go out and hit bad weather. Preventative maintenance is better than full on garage bills, specially on vehicles like this ones.👍🏼👍🏼😀😀

You don’t need to code a battery, just change it with the engine going.

Thanks for your comment, I hear mixed reports on that Peter some say you can get away without bothering with registration if you replace with the same battery type/output but can confirm in piwis there is a procedure for registration. What's the background to leaving the engine running, does it register any fault codes?
@petrol_burner
@petrol_burner 3 жыл бұрын
@@TDS981 I did it in my 997.2, started the car, disconnect the leads, make sure you don’t let the ends touch anything metal. Take out the old, put in the new, reconnect the leads. That’s it! Most modern cars require coding, not required when it ticking over. A trick that we used to do in the old day, when you lost the code of the car stereo.

I changed my battery too. Whent it got too old. The Pasm and the psm don’t work for a while. But start up and drive for a few miles. And stop the car and switch it off. And it all works again. And then just clear the fault codes later. I also use an 85ah battery now.

Very good video. There are 4 drain holes front and rear. There are two small ones in the channel back to the trunk lid. just behind the glass on the door. An air line will clear them. I put a hose down the main front ones and main two rear ones and wash them all out.

3:45 Had the same happen in my 997 S Cab. Carpet R&R, foam deadening replacement, replace underseat electronics to the tune of $4k. If you take it for service, you need to ask and make sure they've cleaned the drains as it was overlooked in my case, contributing to the issue. Or just DIY as TDS has shown us👍! I now check it myself in my 987 S. Lesson learned! And one more reason not to park under trees--because dust/dirt, yeah, but leaf bits or bugs are the usual culprits to a clogged drain. Also, make sure your drain rail below the rear window is in its clips and the plastic side drain trays are spread up out over the mechanicals and "package shelf" (or, "subwoofer shelf"). All this can be seen with the roof part-way down in "service position".

Not exactly maintenance, but my 2015 Cayman PCM failed totally in 2022, just possibly because the car spent a lot of time unused but on a trickle charger. Research however suggests that all Porsche models , not just Caymans, in the 2014-2018 years are susceptible to this expensive failure , regardless of how the cars are used, but no admission of this from the factory.
@TDS981
@TDS981 Жыл бұрын
The PCM has an old hdd in it they will fail at some point it's just how it is. The good news is you can clone them and repair the pcm for much less than replacing one. Or alternatively get the PCM4 like I demonstrate in a later video.

Good tips, great video and thanks. Question... have you done a video on servicing the PDK as I'm keen to do this myself on my 981 Cayman. Is the Clutch fluid in with the PDK fluid or is it in with the Diff fluid? I think there is only 2 fluid types needed? Hope you can help me understand how Mr Porsche put this together. Not sure how often the previous owner used the Launch Control so a PDK fluid change is on my list to do.
@TDS981
@TDS981 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, thanks for watching. PDK servicing is probably something I would prefer to hand over to a professional, there is a quite a long interval on it anyway, 12yrs or 120k from factory. The service manual calls for using PIWIS software to put the car into a sort of refill mode. The pdk fluid and clutch fluid are independent of one another so yes only two fluids needed. Instead of changing the oil have you tried resetting the system, I found out about this information online, it should reset everything. Turn on the engine, turn off A/C and any other item like PCM and so on, and run engine for 3 minutes. Turn on A/C and wait with the engine idling for another 3 minutes. Turn off the engine, remove the key, close the drivers door and wait one minute. Restart the engine and the PDK sysyem is now reset to factory defaults. Good luck.
@rob7076
@rob7076 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the prompt reply to my questions. The only reason to change the PDK fluid was the unknown way my Cayman had been driven by the previous owner. Will do the reset procedure and see what, if any, difference it makes. Great cars and to me they seem to be built strong and reliable if maintained correctly. Please keep-up the videos, much appreciated and thank you again.

Thanks for the tips. Can you expand on the need to buy a Porsche battery that Porsche needs to code for you? I've not heard that before. I always assumed that a battery is a battery.
@TDS981
@TDS981 Жыл бұрын
Hello, if the car has an intelligent charging system then the car needs to register that there is a new battery to adapt the level of charge from the alternator. Older batteries need more charging than new and if the car overcharges the new battery it could shorten it's life. Not all cars have this system but most modern cars work in this way.

Local Porsche Specialist just replaced my leaking water pump and bolt snapped on exhaust when he was removing exhaust to fit pump. My car is a late 2016 Cayman 718 with 29K miles so changing bolts regularly sounds like good advice! Would be nice if anyone could recommend non Porshe supplied bolts - would fitting stainless steel bolts be OK on an exhaust for example?
@TDS981
@TDS981 3 жыл бұрын
@@osbornewales some stainless may not stand the heat/cooling cyles over a longer period, i've seen copper recommended by others online but as long you inspect them and change as required you should be ok with either.

My 25k 981 had similar chocolate bolts . Porsche Hull wanted £600 to change the six bolts ! Needless to say I declined their kind offer . Local independent changed them (& gaskets) for £150 . Got them to use stainless bolts and brass nuts . Time will tell if these last , but they cannot be any worse . Also note that Porsche would not extend my warrantee until the Zunsport grills protecting the air- con condensers were removed . I fitted these after the condensers were punctured and changed for new units . Obviously an improvement - but not in Porsches eyes …

@@TDS981 great, thanks -another suggestion for you for a video might be how to connect a CTEK charger properly-I wasn't sure and didn't have the manual for my car although I found out eventually via other channels on youtube. Finally, can I ask you a quick question about the sports plus mode-does it really change gear so often? I'm not sure my Cayman is working correctly. I hardly use it because it seems so fickle?

Hi trying to fit my own mesh grills on my Boxster 981 can’t get the plastic strips off that hide the tie raps, I have pulled on the middle clip but can’t get the corner part to move looking at the car drivers side have tried to pull it from where it attaches to nearest the number plate but can’t get them to budge any advice
@TDS981
@TDS981 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, as I recall you need to release them in the middle and pull from the outside edge of the car. A little bit of heat on the plastic might help. You need to find the balance between pulling the outside a bit harder without breaking it.

@TDS981
@TDS981 4 жыл бұрын
@texas gooner, I would say it's quite straightforward since they are located at the side. The mesh is very flexible and there is lots of room in the vent. Just bend it and then use your tie wraps to pull it back towards you and fix to the slats. 👍

I believe you can do all this through the dealer workshop you can do all the maintenance required for the air conditioner or any other parts in this vehicle through dealer workshop and every owner who has a Porsche or any expensive vehicle should remember (if you cannot maintain this type of vehicle so ) better to not purchase it and purchase a cheaper vehicle that suits your budget in this life this is what I believe.
@TDS981
@TDS981 2 жыл бұрын
This video doesn't encourage anyone to skip maintenance rather to perform some extra tasks on the side to keep the car looking and feeling good. The dealership will of course repair the problems for you but these tips are not usually part of their service routines. A warranty is available for anyone who would like to have a fixed cost for any potential repairs.
