Here’s what you did wrong: 1-You overfilled the oil, never do that, you can cause damage to the engine. The best level to keep the car at, is one square below the top arrow. 2-When pushing the pads into the calipers, always loosen the fluid reservoir cap in order not to create excessive pressure. And lastly, NEVER EVER go under a car without putting something solid higher than your skull .. like the wheels for example, never rely on floor jacks to protect you from being crushed to death. (This is the California in me talking)

The ingition went out on my 2003 911 last year. Quote to replace it including maintenance fees was 800 bucks. I ordered the part off of Pelican Parts, cost me 40 bucks, got under the dash and did it myself in 1 hour. Was it difficult? Yes. Was it frustrating at times? Yes. But hey, now I know how to do it. Thing is most Porsche owners has tons of cash to just throw away so they don't think twice about it and pay a shop. Certain things of course are harder than others, but there is a lot you can do yourself and save a lot of money. I only make 70 grand a year, so every penny counts.

For the novice car enthusiasts that may be watching and learning, I'm reasonably certain they were in fact using jack stands, just leaving the floor jack in place as a back-up. Attempting a brake job - or any work on a car - just using a floor jack is no bueno, of course.

Bought my 80k mile 2009 Cayman S PDK (nearly identical spec but silver) about 18 months ago. I've done 3 oil changes, cabin and air filters, complete stereo upgrade, rebuilt and refinished the calipers, battery, Ohlins coilovers with top mounts and drop links, painted the center console, and made a custom trailer hitch. Oh! And I swapped to the paddle shift Sport Design steering wheel--soooo much better, and an easy job. In the next few weeks I've got 4 new rotors and I'm servicing the differential and the PDK.

Your friend made the AOS look easy, not sure if I could do that myself. I do enjoy doing all the other items you show here, the 987.2 S is a rewarding car to work on and the savings are huge.

I got a 968. My initial yearly cost of maintenance consists of a timing belt with water pump and front seals, oil pan leak, all shocks and a transmission rebuild. All of these cost almost $10,000 with parts and labor from an independent Porsche shop and a specialty transmission shop combined. After addressing the major issues, I spend about $300-$600 a year on maintenance which consists of oil change, coolant fluid every other year, wheel alignment and transmission fluid change every 3-4 years. Sometimes my annual maintenance is $1000 due to old parts being replaced or tires. Every five years, about $2300 is added to the regular yearly cost of maintenance for the timing belt, water pump, front seals and the camshaft chain check or replacement. I do most of the basic maintenance by myself and it isn't that bad for a Porsche.

Back in the old days I had a Porsche 944, and I did work similar to this. Brakes, filters, plugs, the standard stuff. Always got the questions from others, "how can you afford the repairs and maintenance?" I said, "I do all the easy (expensive) stuff myself, and anything else more complicated, or requiring a lift, goes to the shop." It ended up being affordable to own. I do the same with my current GTI, except (knock on wood) it has not needed a single repair. Luke, love this channel (as well as your main channel!) and great to see Colin (sp) wrenching with you too.

Now you are swaying me to look back at a 987.2, maintenance looks easier than 981. Nice job!

Jack from the back of the car. It’s rear mid engine. Just putting unnecessary torque on the chassis if you aren’t lifting from nearest to the center if gravity on any car.

Excellent video, guys…! The front brake sensor wires are actually two different sizes. The difference is only about 1/4” but you need to make sure you get the correct one on the correct side. Without going through my notes, I couldn’t tell you which one is which, but just noting it for those who are going to do this in the future. Definitely drain some oil out of the engine. My Porsche dealer recommends filling up to 3/4 on the bar to allow for the oil to expand when it gets super hot. The difference is only a couple of ounces but it definitely matters. I didn’t see the jackstands either… But glad you had them in place. Next time around, consider using ceramic pads as they create very little dust, and still have a lot of stopping power. Constantly cleaning Porsche wheels is not the definition of a good time. Keep up the great work!

Engine oil takes a lot longer to warm up than coolant. Just because the coolant is warm does not mean that the engine is warmed up yet!

Congrats on your DIY! Beautiful car! Having a little lip on the rotor isn't a big deal. It is important to monitor the actual thickness of the rotor. TIp on oil: Keep the level close to the minimum, and just add some when needed. This will help keep the oil vapors going into the intake to a minimum.

The cool thing is, with the money I saved by doing my own maintenance, I could justify buying a Quick Jack lift for engine and transmission oil changes, wheel cleaning and rotation, and future spark plug replacement. Definitely worth the hours, and it’s kind of fun.🍺

Well done, guys! I spent only 115€ (125$) for my "instant" oil and filter change at McOil here in Germany for my base Cayman 987. Wouldn't save anything doing the oil service on my own in this case.

However, you made that AoS job so easy 🙂 Heard 987.2 is a bit easier than 987.1 (which is easier than 986) especially that bottom hose / clamp....which is almost impossible to remove without a special tool.

If you actively have to change an AOS annually, just install an Oil catch can. Way more effective down side you have to pour out the bad oil from the catch can and top up your oil, and those aren't even down sides 🤷🏾

a couple of things: pull the spout out of the oil container, it will pour faster. drive the car it will warm up faster. thirdly. handle your mouse issue or you will need wiring repairs.

I would level the car with 4 jack stands before dropping the oil.

So how will DIY maintenance including overfilling engine oil affect the resale value of your Porsche? A friend of mine had an old Porsche 911 from a time when cars were "easier to fix than nowadays" - and even there, the engine was crammed in so tightly that it had to be disconnected and hauled out for better accessibility at a tremendous cost for every major service. It's that compact build that gives a Porsche a slight edge on a track but makes maintenance difficult and expensive.

Brembo fixed caliper brakes are really easy to service actually.

The oil is supposed to read between the two arrow markers next to the guage, you over-filled it which can damage the engine.

That is great that you are handy but most people do not know how to do that.

Just me or did the oil level sensor read over-full? Often you don't add in the full capacity as a pan and filter drain doesn't drain 100% of the oil every time.

I bet @dosdude1 can upgrade that Porschah to an i7 and put in eGPU!

People are terrified to work on their cars. I have a 2020 Mustang GT with a supercharger making 770HP to the wheels (can see it on my channel, I make videos for my family and friends far away) and do the work myself. My engineer friend has a 2020 Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye Widebody (also on my channel) and he's afraid to touch the air filter. I've been doing brakes since 1991. They only go on one way, it's impossible to mess installing them.

I’ve done all the maintenance at home on my 987S. Porsches are actually pretty easy to work on and well engineered. I can’t imagine owning 2 aging German cars (we have an Audi Q5 as well) and paying dealership service rates. The local dealer charges over $200 an hour!
