Is your Porsche Sports Exhaust PSE as loud as you remember, or maybe you had a coolant warning light recently? if there is no sign of coolant leak then you need to watch this video!
In this episode of the Porsche maintenance series, we explain how the PSE operates, what can go wrong with it and how to fix it.
Please leave comments if you have faced this issue on your Porsche, it is applicable to the 981, 911 - 997, 991, 718 and many more.
Thanks for watching

In this episode I attempt to find out why my Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) has lost it's snap, crackle and pop. I also got a coolant warning a few weeks before. We go through how the PSE and vacuum system works and the potential areas to troubleshoot before visiting the OPC or specialist.
First we look at the exhaust valves and actuators to find out if they are seized before moving into the engine bay to explore the vacuum system and electrical components which control the system.
We then move onto the vacuum system, the vacuum system controls the movement of the valves and if there is a leak or the solenoid controlling the system fail the car can begin to throw coolant warning errors or the PSE valves will stop functioning even when pressing the exhaust button.

Golden Rule: whenever you start it, drive it! I'm convinced that the reason these fail is due to the water generated at cold start, if the car isn't then driven very far it sits there and seizes the valve.

Looking at Jeff Richardson's Video I see that the removal of the engine top cover is a lot more complicated on the 981/2 than the 986/7. Getting the hood to go forward to gain access to the engine cover is far easier on the 986/7. I never realised this before as I have never attempted it on my 981 and 718 cars. Your video is well done. I wish Jeff Richardson could get his vocal sound system as good as yours.

Thank you for this video. This helped me track down a cooling system fault on a 2018 Cayman GTS that has been hounding me for many weeks. I changed 2 change over valves (COVs) accessed from the engine cover in the trunk but couldn’t figure out why the problem persisted. Then I saw your video and checked the PSE valve. Quickly found out that I had no vacuum at all! Turns out one of the COVs deep inside the engine compartment (above the water pump) had both vacuum lines disconnected. Must have been by previous owner. I reconnected them and voila! Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Amazing: most of the stuff you have published have failed on my car as well: jet washers, sports exhaust, (now) a front coil broken, the fan (which I have fixed but I don’t think you have published anything about it yet - a very easy fix as one needs to access it and give it a spin to bring it back to life). A pheasant hit (or the other way around…) my front right radiator grid (awaiting for a fix). It would be nice how to tighten up (or replace it with a new one) the soft top but I haven’t found a way to do it myself. I want to replace the PASM suspension myself plus the brakes but I have not been brave enough yet! All your tips are of great help, thank you for publisher them

@@TDS981 Apologies if I have missed the fan bit. It could well be that’s because I had already sorted that matter and my brain kinda overpassed that bit. Yeah there are a few bits that need to be done: I have had the car (981S manual) since new (in 2012) and it was my daily driver for some years so it has 110k miles on the clock and some wear. But there are good bits: believe it or not but the discs and the brake pads are still the original ones (I go sideways but only very occasionally and just in moderate doses as I am very careful with wear and tear items) - but I have to say breaking is not as it was nowadays and probably it needs a good check. The clutch and the shocks are still original as well. The shocks (PASM) need doing definitely but what I would like (KWs getting rid of PASM or Bilsteins keeping PASM) is too expensive. Another option would be to buy the 981 GTS shocks (with PASM from factory) but i am not sure if my car would have to be re-coded to recognise the new dampers… My short aim is to resolve the windscreen water jets (I’ll follow your advice), replace the front coils (I need a dose of bravery…) and fix the plastic grid on the front of the radiators (which were replaced once at one of the Porsche Centres at about 50k miles). Re the soft top this is a common thing as the all becomes slightly loose over time generating a very particular (low frequency) noise: the fabric / structure was once tightened at a Porsche dealer to good effect so long as one asks they will do it - I am just not sure what exactly they do. I did not replace my indicators but on the side ones I did install LED bulbs which I fitted as well to the front headlights without any CANbus error. The sports exhaust failed once when the car was new (replaced at no cost by Porsche) and for a long while now has been malfunctioning: I reckon every now and again something happens and comes to live but that is normally short lived to the point I was thinking soldering the thing on its open position! Overall it is the shocks that I most want doing as the car has always been a touch too soft for my taste. There are a few other things: I want the plenum that comes with the 82mm throttle body (rather that the artificially restricted 74mm to prevent the car to compete with the 991 Carrera 3.4…), a software tuning, a single flywheel and a short throw gearchange… I could do with a X-Pipe tip as well as these are not too expensive. But the iWant needs an iBudget and that will take time 😊

Thanks for subscribing 👍 there are quite a few of these connected to your vacuum system, you'll need to access the top of the engine to find and test them (watch my other video) but if your heating is running cold then you'll know it's that one. I'd check out your coolant level first and the thermostat etc.

Those of you who do not have PSE, do the Carnewal/Cantrell modification. You ship your Non-PSE muffler to them, they cut off the entry pipe, reach in and use a torch to cut a hole in the pipe inside the muffler, and then weld it all back together with an added support. The resulting box looks extremely stock and still has the original Porsche part numbers. Yet it sounds about the same as PSE, though obviously full time. Total cost with shipping and local installation: $800. FAR cheaper than the $2000 that Suncoast Porsche wants for a complete PSE system, and that does NOT include installation!
@TDS981
@TDS981 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely an option if you don't have PSE but you get what you pay for, the Carnewal systems I've heard are a bit quieter than PSE. I can't comment on the Cantrell mod.

Love your videos, you're the only person I subscribe to on KZfaq. My left valve corroded and jammed shut, replaced under warranty, now a year later the right one has also jammed shut too! So now going back to Porsche again for that side to be replaced under warranty when they reopen 🤦🏻‍♂️ Looked more into the sound symposer after seeing this video and after hours trawling through Google I finally came across a guy on PH who explained the parts needed very well - lo and behold I realised it was also you haha! If I can source the parts, how difficult is it to fit myself? Does the engine need to come out to fit the airbox as some people have suggested or can I do it with fairly little experience? Could you perhaps do a video showing how to install both parts if you have time during lockdown? Thank you 🙏🏻
@TDS981
@TDS981 4 жыл бұрын
Hi John, that is incredible feedback really nice to hear. Got some more stuff of interest coming you way shortly please keep commenting and let me know what you would like help with its good to help me focus on the right stuff. Regarding the sound symposer you have a list of the parts so that's good, you need to open the engine cover and remove the plastic air intake and filter on the driver's side and replace it with the GTS airbox with the opening for the sound symposer tube. The easiest way is to remove part of the plastic intake manifold for access and then it all clips together. The sound symposer uses engine vaccum just like the PSE but it opens with vaccum instead of closing. By connecting it to the system you can have it always open when the engine is running which is what I recommend or you can install another changeover valve if you want and make it switchable with the sport button. It's not for the faint hearted but worth the effort in my opinion, car sounds sublime at the top end, provides a nice howl.

Great videos. I bought my 2014 Boxster 981s after watching your videos. I just retrofitted PSE and programmed the button at dealership. i have a few questions. The baseline sound is significantly louder than the stock exhaust, as if it's left in open valves mode, also there doesn't seem to be any sound difference between valves open or closed (i checked both valves and they are moving), the only difference is a bit louder sound on higher RPM and pops and gurgles. But nothing different during idling, what could be the issue?

Something very high temp would be ny suggestion. This one goes to around 140c which may be enough for the valves since they get some air. amzn.to/2BUIgmp My other piece of advice would be to drive with the exhaust off from time to time as that will ensure they are operating in both positions and less like to seize. This is a really good video - thank you! I have a 981 Cayman, which happened to have the “cooling system fault” error popping up over the weekend. Following your advice, I checked my exhaust valves and found that one is always closed and the other is always opened with the PSE switch off and on. The parts are rusted and could not be moved at all. In this case I guess it’s a bit too early to tell if it’s the change over valve problem? Just ordered some penetrant to see if I can get the bolts moving freely

Update: I sprayed the actuators three times and finished half can of WD40, but the rods are still rock solid (some surface rust did come off though). Have you swapped the system so the mechanical valves have been changed? The stock system opens the valves when there is no vacuum and closes them if it receives it. The switch just alternates that position. What position are yours in with the engine off?

Yes I think it's great, the induction roar under light throttle is nice to have but the best bit is higher up just before changing up sounds awesome 👌. You need the part itself £150 but also the GTS airbox on the driver's side for the connection point. Accessing it is difficult, it's definitely worth it but only if you can get the airbox at a reasonable price like I did.

My friends 991 3.8 has the sound symposer , every time he takes me out it sounds epic under throttle, that throttle noise it great inside the car , looking at it looks like a pretty easy job to do and make your own , they don’t do one for the 987.2 , looks like there is a one way flap , I can’t see why I can’t make my own with a 30 mm pipe or flexy pipe from air box to hole it back of cabin , and put a small piece of air filter foam at the cabin end ? Just make a hole in air box to channel sound ? Basically it must suck some air from cabin ... the one way flap could be a problem it says that’s to stop fumes coming inside , but basically it sucking in ? I could just buy the 981 pipe for £150 and modify it ... is the another servo flap that opens on it on sport plus and then closes it ? I’m not bothered about that want it open all the time , easy turn off just put a plug in one end ... just done a internal rear exhaust mod I think it’s basically the same as what carnewal do , handy being a welder ... its good because not silly loud on tick over but howls over 3000 rpm , got some 200 cell headers going on next month fingers crossed the bolts don’t snap ...

I enjoy your videos and appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I am curious if I have a bad change over valve... I ask because I recently installed a race exhaust on my 981 gt4 which doesn't have exhaust valves... its loud all the time. The shop plugged the vacuum lines and after driving it for an hour or so after the install I received the "Cooling system fault" message. I called the exhaust manufacturer and they told me to unplug the vacuum lines, reset the fault message and all would be fine. I am going to try that, but I feel that leaving them exposed to the ambient may trigger fault as well. Just curious if you have heard of this. Thanks

Hi thanks for watching. The vacuum system is all linked and that includes your coolant system. When my changeover valve was faulty I received the same message but had no coolant issue. Quick question on this one. With your PSE, let's say you've got the sport exhaust switched on, is there any dynamic open/close behavior with throttle/rpm or do you expect the valves to stay open all the time? With mine at idle, it looks ok, as I press the switch on/off the valves open/close. But I swear I can sometimes hear them actuating between 1-2k rpm. I think there's sometimes there's almost a bit of a delay as I press the throttle and then the it sounds like the valves pop open. Makes me wonder if this is normal or if something's not quite behaving? (2012 981 S)
@TDS981
@TDS981 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know for sure I'd have to get a camera back there to check but if you Google this you will see that some people report that the valves close again after you drive off and open again after you reach higher rpm or speed. I can't confirm or deny as I don't hear mine moving and different ECU software versions could behave slightly differently. If you see the valves opening and closing with the switch with a warm engine at idle then you are ok, you should hear more pops and bangs, it's very obvious to me when it's not working even at one side.

This friday porsche dealer replaced exhaust valve unit under extended warranty. Now the exhaust doesn't sound so loud anymore, even on higher rpm's when pushing hard I can feel that the pops are not the same. I can see/feel that valves are closing near 3000rpm. Also when revving on neutral it closes the valves automatically even on the sport mode. Is it possible that they did something wrong when replacing the valve unit under the car? Hi Simon thanks for watching, if you want it activated with the sport button as per the GTS search the engine loom around the PSE for another plug, there should be one there and buy a changeover valve and a couple of t pieces and extra hose for the vaccum line and hook it together, then activate the option I150 with PIWIS. Alternatively hook it up to the vacuum line and it will stay open all the time when the engine is running. I have sport on all the time anyway so I that would be my suggestion if you do the same.
