This video shows how I use a portable aircon with a casement or crank out window (the one not included in the installation manual for the portable aircon) keeping the bug screen in tact, ability to close the window during rain and keeping the cooling efficiency to a maximum. You only need a couple of screws and bracket (usually provided with the aircon) and a Frost King window insulation kit (www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/fr.... I shifted to portable aircon from central when I was quoted $5k for a new one.

Thanks for the video. I just hooked up my new portable A/C to my screen using your ideas. I screwed the plate onto my screen (vertically). I put the plastic window insulation on the outside of the screen and also on the inside of my screen. Total cost of materials was under $20. With the plastic insulation on both sides of the screen it really cuts down on the heat transmission. I also put an insulating tube/sock over my hose to cut down heat transfer as well.

Glad it worked!

So, did you put the insulating film on the outside of the screen, put the screen on and then put more insulating film on on the inside? Just curious as I have this same issue and I don't know if I want to do plexi or if I want to do this.

@@thisGuy481 both sides. But it is light stuff and noise comes through easily. Plexiglass is probably the nicer option. And if you want to switch to just a screen for outside air it would be better to have the plexiglas and just swap out for the screen.

Thanks for the great idea I was wondering will that be difficult to remove the film from the window screen at fall?

Not at all. It comes off pretty easy.

thank you for the video. I just got an Insignia today, but haven't hooked it up yet. I live in the U.S. so my unit looks different and it's white - I love the silver/gray color of yours, wish I could have had that choice :) Tomorrow I will have some help getting it out of my car as it's very heavy! And hopefully, that hose won't look too ugly in my LR window, as it's the first thing you see when you walk in te front door! It's either a portable A/C or get an LG through the window installed -- I'm trying the portable first ... to see how it goes, etc ... Like noise and if it reall cools my place down. You made your video back on June 9th and wondering how you like it now? Is it cooling to your satisfaction? How's the noise level ? BTW- when watching the video I couldn't hear you when you got right up close where the unit/fan was --- as your mic was picking that up rather than your voice:) Thanks again!!

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry for the delay in responding as we were on vacation (BTW - please do checkout our new roadtrip videos). I hope you are enjoying your new portable aircon. Yes, the silver/gray works well in my house but I think white is cool too. I prefer the portable as it is less maintenance and setup cost. The air hose doesn't look too bad. It blends in well if you install in properly. I used black ducktape on a silver aircon - should have used gray :) This is my second summer with my two Insignia portables. I have one in the living room and one in the bedroom. They work fantastic. I love the fact that I can switch them on and off only when I need them rather than a central ac. They are very cost efficient in my observation. Yes, they can be a bit noisy when you have the fan on high. What I do is to put the fan on low after around 30 minutes. Then the noise is not that noticeable. Thanks for the feedback on the mic picking up the noise instead of my voice. That proves that my review was genuine and I didn't do it for sponsorship :D

What about the drainage hose please I haven’t figured that out yet

I don't use the drainage hose. You can attach it to the AC and put it out through the small hole in the window plate if you want but it's not necessary. What I do is keep the drainage outlets closed with the screw-on caps so that water doesn't leak. You can empty the water every month or so by opening the cap. If you live in a very humid place, you can do it more frequently or attach the hose.

What happens to the area that is not sealed? Do we need to seal the area completely?

Do you mean on the screen? On the screen, there needs to be an opening for the heat to escape. So, that part needs to be open.

Great idea, but way to much talk to just get to the point.

Why not just cut a hole in the mesh and put the vent through it?
@theshadybunchcanada

You could that. However, it will defeat the purpose of the bug screen, unless you really like bugs in the house
