This week, the contestants paint celebrity sitters Sue Perkins, Richard E Grant and Nina Sosanya. But who will the judges send through to the next round?
Portrait Artist of the Year is a competition art show aiming to find the best portrait painter of the year.
Each episode features a regional competition and contestants are challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters.
As the competition goes on, three artists will remain, and these finalists will have their work displayed in the world-famous National Portrait Gallery in London. The winner eventually receives a $10,000 commission to become a permanent part of the British Library!

The winning portrait didn't seem to possess even a smidgen of the sitter's electric personality. I really liked the Grant's vibrant painting. And the paint blobs...love it. It is fun to see an explosion of the artist's exuberance!

In several of these seasons, they are relying on natural light which will change over 4 hours. Taking a photo fixes the shadows and light areas in place. And using the photo as a reference as well as studying the true colors of the model as they sit, makes sense.

I think this is the first episode where I really loved all of the paintings. They were all great likenesses too An amazing group of talented artists! I'm surprised and delighted that the winner was a more traditional artist for a change instead of someone weird and quirky. I am also impressed that she worked mostly directly from life rather than a photo. Difficult in that short span of time.

Richard E. Grant was lovely, from his self deprecating humor to the part where he selected his portrait and said "awww' when warmly accepting a hug from the excited artist. It makes me like him even more.

I also liked the part where he called out the contestants for not actually appreciating the point of painting from life.

Glad she won. Liked her work best of the three and she had to contend with a really challenging sitter! I thought the sitter was both disrespectful of the contestants and very tiresome.

I tire sometimes of the use of photos and gridding. There’s a live model, and I would be more entranced if the artists would make more use of them. I am a painter and I understand that gridding and photos serve a purpose, (even very traditional artists used them), but as someone who doesn’t have the luxury of a live model, I feel it would be more competitive and interesting if this were more limited in the competition.

I guess I am in the minority.. I did not like the one chosen I found it interesting that she was one of the few interacting with a very lively, energetic model with a lot of personality and none of that is reflected in the final work.

I found some of the judges questions of the artists cringe worthy. Also they should talk to them during their break not while they are trying to focus and make the most of their time. You can feel the artist's tension while talking to the judges and I would much rather see them paint. I did not think the best painting was chosen, but she is the one who painted from life without a grid so...

I think the issue for me was where it was placed... if it had been near the bottom, away from the face and from the portrait's gaze, it would have been interesting, but in such a prominent location on the canvas, it was a distraction to the portrait itself. That being said, I still would have picked it as this week's top portrait, with Bill's as runner up and the one that actually won being dead last.

As a purist I think it's alright to work off of photos, but overlaying them with grids and drawing off of grids seems like cheating to me. You should be able to eyeball it when composing, in my view....

I'm curious how many painters is not aware of the fact, that wide angle lenses distort face and you should use portrait or tele lens. Sometimes it's very subtle yet still visible.

Unpopular opinion: working from photo reference should be banned. What's the point of having a sitter if you're not even looking at them. Basically you're just doing a copy of a photo. The portraits are great. But I think it would add to the challenge, the results will be a lot more interesting and the winner would be someone who really deserves to be the winner.
@mellow5123

Agreed. It would certainly separate the wheat from the chaff. Although maybe they're concerned they wouldn't have enough takers if it were banned. It would do a deep cull that they may not want to subject themselves to. I think they like being able to choose from a broader spectrum. Of course quality suffers then.

Also agreed. Seems silly for them to do that when they have the real thing in front if them. I realize a bit part of it is that they’re relying on the grid and I can’t decide if the grid is cheating.

I’m also agreeing why is there a sitter if they will use a photo. And also it doesn’t look right when they paint by using a measured ruler it’s just as they’re filling a puzzle. But I love the show it’s a great show!

You are right. I have recently taken up drawing with charcoal. I am self-taught -- that is to say I'm KZfaq taught. For now I am using reference photographs for practice but I don't use the grid method. Did it just once and hated it. I felt like I was just putting bits and pieces together and nothing related as a whole. I was discouraged because I really did feel like I might as well be tracing the image. So one time was enough for me. I just look at the photo and try to draw what I see. One day I hope to advance to live sitters.

First time I see this show. At first I thought, Oh, well there’s nothing else to watch at the moment, however, thry are truly, truly talented. Plus, it was nice having that young man who is just starting out. I would love to see more of their art. The dots painter was my second best and yes, Phoebe’s painting was the best in my estimation. 👍🏽

I like this series, but am not sure about using photos when the model is right there. Are you copying a photo? Putting grids over the photo and using Photoshop...cheating? The guy with the wax. Very interesting. I think I like it.
