It is hard to believe the artist Edward (Husu?) didn’t at least make the final three. What a stunning portrait he painted. The other artists are amazing, but his should of made the cut over chosen three. Thank you for posting this series.

I feel that the judges TOTALLY missed the mark on this one! Edward's was the best portrait of the day, period. And to use the excuse of the self portrait as having weight in their decisions doesn't justify his exclusion, as his self portrait was also magnificent! I truly do not get how they could choose a couple of those in the top three and leave him out altogether. Very disappointing.

No question Edward’s portrait has more depth than Leslie’s on that particular day. What is telling is the subject picked Edward’s to hang in her home.

I wondered why Taro (?) was in the final 3 and was convinced they were going to call Amy's name out as the winner. Huge shock when they called out his name, as his painting looked nothing like his sitter (his first sketches did tho) and Amy's was magnificent. I liked Mauricio's painting too. He had the best likeness, as well as Jennifer and Amy. But Amy's was the standout. I liked Edward's background, but the likeness wasn't there in the mouth. I was shouting "change the mouth" at the end lol, as if he had, the likeness would have been there and he would have been a contender, as his background was awesome. But Amy should have gone through.

No point in having a wonderful live sitter if you’re going to stare at electronics the whole time.
@hummingnectarbird
@hummingnectarbird 2 жыл бұрын
Because they only have 4 hours to paint a likeness, they are permitted to grid or take pictures for reference to place features correctly. Once they do that, then the creativity starts as they then turn their eye to the sitter and all the nuances of color that makes a portrait. Renaissance artist and artists after them used the grid method too. It was called the Camera Obscura, and they would pull it around from house to house painting. There’s no way a family or child can sit still for the amount of time needed to paint with accuracy. They’re not cheating. They’re just using an object for aid. The artist who paints completely from a photo will find the finished product flat. They have to imagine what the subject’s skin looks like, etc. That’s why it is important to paint from life if you can, so you can capture that light as it hits your subject.

@hummingnectarbird
@hummingnectarbird 2 жыл бұрын
@@wildzac Perhaps “cheating” is the wrong word and thank you for calling attention to it. These artists are expected to create a portrait in 4 hours, when it normally can take weeks or more. Use of a grid and photo eliminates a lot of prep time. Get the features situated right, then you can go into capturing the person’s unique personality. I love the show and am amazed at what can be done in 4 hours. I think my favorite was Christian Hook.
@katalinelo8011

@@DS-ky9dl as far as I understood the concept everyone gets breaks (sitters and artists) at the same time. A short one after every hour and a longer in the middle for lunch. They even show/discuss it in some episodes. But as it is impossible to keep perfectly still and get back to exactly the same position, it makes sense to have a backup photo beside (not to mention the changing light). However some do only paint looking at the photo which really is a pity when you have the luxury of a real life model.

they need to ban electronics and make them paint from life. sheesh
@gloriapinskerportraits4801
@gloriapinskerportraits4801 2 жыл бұрын
Cosmiccube: The only problem with that is, with all the other artists around it is hard to get close enough to see details, like the eyes, etc. That is when the devices might come in handy. If you are alone you can go back and forth and study the sitter, but in this context that would be awkward or impossible.
@endlessstudent3512
@endlessstudent3512 8 ай бұрын
spoken like a truly unknowing person. In a 1:1 the artist can go to the model constantly to check details, can choose the best position and admonish the model to keep still. None of that is possible here. If you would commission a portrait if youself....the artist would take 20 pictures of you and paint from them. Doesn't make it that much easier. In history, before photos were a thing, the artists would do many sittings with their subject, the models hat to sit for some hours for weeks, the artists painted at least 10 paintings before doing the final one....to really get to know the features and get the likeness. In 4 hours, photos are absolutely ok. But I admit, the using the grids etc...that should indeed be banned.
