The STREET PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY techniques of Joel Sternfeld
How do you create the perfect portrait of a stranger? Who should you approach? How should you shoot it? What set-up should you use? What qualities should you look for? What should it say to its audience? If I were to name one person who I feel has come pretty close to perfection with their stranger portraits, it would be Joel Sternfeld.
Joel Sternfeld is acutely aware of the limitations, the myths and the manipulation a photographer employs when creating work. And he uses this to create images that throw questions back at the viewer, forcing them to reevaluate their own perceptions of not only photography, but of the world. There is a subtle level of oddity that frequently occurs in his images, and it’s this that Sternfeld uses to challenge our preconceptions.

I don't use Capture One I'm afraid. I don't think it can support colour profiles like Lightroom can which is the foundation of how I get the Kodachrome look.

It's a pity, that you upload a video only once a month. But after watching those i get why. You are putting so much effort in the editing so it just an absolute joy to watch them - no matter the content. And on top of that you can really tell how many thoughts you are putting into each and every one of your videos. Everyone tells a story, everyone teaches me something and in everyone you can tell it is a Jamie Windsor, because you are putting your own thoughts and feelings into it. I really appreciate your work. Thank you. Keep it up and stay healthy. Greetings from Germany.

Spot on comment Simon. Looking at the Joel Sternfield images, you could easily skim through them, but then with a little bit of JW commentary, you start to see the compositional constructs, the placing of subjects/objects, the framing used and particularly the use of colour as a compositional tool with the echoing of shapes and colours. Good work Jamie, keep it coming.

I personally shoot alot of cameras that don't have a rangefinder, and are zone focused only. This causes me to, as often as I can, stop down to ensure proper focus. I feel this has mead me to work *much more* than I had in the past on composition, particularly when shooting street style photography (midterm project for my photo class). I think too many people rely on shallow aperture as a crutch to fix framing problems when they could just reframe.

Joel is actually my uncle. My whole life I’ve known him as my photographer uncle that gave me my first camera, but only now as I grow older do I realize the significance of his work in the scheme of my favorite artistic medium. This video truly helped to highlight that for me, I will definitely be showing this to him but I’ll be surprised if he can sit down for an 11 minute long video about himself.

Two things that spring to mind from watching this: - I need to look at Joel Sternfeld's work as those portraits stand out markedly against the current haze of average street photography - I had forgotten how many people rollerbladed in the 90s Another great video Jamie. I would love my photography to be valued like that in 20 or 30 years from now.

I have only recently come across your channel Jamie and I have been spending some time looking back over your catalog of uploads. I'm really enjoying your videos. The thing I love about them is that they are educational and thought provoking. I watch many photography vloggs (which I enjoy), but I often think that I haven't learned much from them or been challenged much by them, but your videos are different. I like your approach. Its not click-bait, its not just your opinion on the latest camera or gear, but it is well thought out, backed up with examples or facts and genuinely educational. I also like how you focus on the most important aspects of photography (i.e. not the equipment.) Thanks very much. :)

I had a somewhat similar experience with a friend. I showed her a book with photographs from Gary Winogrand. At first sight she thought those photos were just "snapshots", but after going through the complete book the patterns, the relationships, the individual elements and together the story about those people in all those photographs became clear.

This is a fantastic video. I LOVE Joel Sternfeld, one of my favourite photographers of all time. His book 'American Prospects' is incredible. Like you, I find myself looking at photos of his for 5 or 10 minutes because there's so much in each one. His use of colour selection and the "pulling you in" elements to his photos reminds me of Fred Herzog, who also had an incredible way of tying together colours in a scene and creating something almost mystical in his subjects. I also wanted to say a big thank you for creating the Kodachrome pack. I purchased this in February and it's awesome. The McCurry ones are my favourites.

As usual you have tremendous insight into photos that I would probably skim through without noticing the consistent color palette that really does add to each photo and without really seeing or wondering about the story that draws you into the image. You also noted as I did that the images are not "phony poses with a smile" so this photographer has developed a great interpersonal skill to connect with the subject to get this result (maybe he threw out 1,000 other pictures where the subject just stood there and smiled, but none-the-less the successful shots he displays are skillfully composed). That interpersonal skill, to me, makes the technical side of photography seem easy - the composition is the greatest part of the talent.

Stunningly good insight. Listening to your discussion of Sternfeld's photos is like suddenly opening your eyes to see them. What in one moment seems a mundane picture of a bipedal hominid opens up to reveal how integrated this human being is with their surroundings. I positively adore your clarity and vision. The word omniscient comes to mind. Well done.

I watch pretty much all of your videos at least 2x. Apart from every masterful video essay that you produce with such a keen and investigative eye for that subject, i then go back and watch again realizing what a tremendous job you do with the edit. Simple things 99 percent of viewers wouldn't even think twice about, i am constantly in awe of your transitions, framing up of everything and how it flows perfectly from one to the next. Then i realize, having said all that, that it is spectacular that you are able to work so fast a to produce a video a month or every two months. Always excited to see what you have made.

Your command of the language and the way you employ it to convey the nuggets of photographic (or, generally, artistic) learning/wisdom calls out for you to write! Though the title "The Art of Photography" has been taken (or overused), one conveying the substance of what such books should impart written and illustrated by you would be amazing, entertaining, eye opening and of immense usefulness. This is neither fawning nor lightly suggested. The way you present is extremely effective and worthy of being reduced to the written word.
