Gianni, I love your videos. I love the way you journal your trips, beautiful and interesting views, scenery. The music selection (and volume) are well planned and presented. In this particular video, I love the clips of the ocean and waves, showing the curls. I didn’t realize Portugal 🇵🇹 was so incredibly. Watching these (all your videos, in fact), make me feel so envious. I love my Brompton, and would love to do some touring, but my cycling days have "slowed down" as I have gotten older (75). By reading your books and watching your videos, I know we think very much alike, too bad we don’t live closer, it would be fun touring with you. Thanks for the great videos, they really do take me back to some of my earlier touring days.

You made my day Chuck! So nice to get such comments. Portugal exceeded my expectations too, a really beautiful country to visit. I think we have all been lucky to experience this beautiful Earth by bike as it really is the perfect tool for discovering it. I am sure you are still making the most of your Brompton and enjoying the rides you feel comfortable with. Nowadays an electric bike can also keep you going and riding further no matter your age! I am sure one day I will make use of them ;) Take care and happy cycling.

Your productions are absolutely wonderful. I discovered your Scotland trip initially and it was superb. And this Portugal trip does not disappoint. The soundtrack is also first class and compliments the scenery so well. I ride Brompton too, having acquired it about 2 months ago, a P Line Electric that is kind to my 75 year old body. I’ve had many, many, bikes but there’s something special about a Brompton. Bravo on your superb clips. Your channel has become my favourite get-away.

@@showboat4869 Not my experience at all but I must add that most of my route here was Eurovelo 1 which is dedicated cycle route... I did cycle in traffic at times and never felt unsafe. So pleasant to watch. Thank you for sharing your joy. I am finally going to Bali next month but still haven’t been able to decide on what bags to use and how to secure them to my Brompton. In the US, it’s hard to find good bags for Brompton. I recently replaced my handle bar grips with the ergo type and the seat with a Brooks seat. The difference is amazing. It’s less tiring to ride and is safer.

@@BromptonTraveler Today I am making a cardboard box for my Brompton. I do have an Ikea bag but I think putting it inside a box is safer. From your experience, did you ever encounter any problems when you were flying from one place to another whether it was due to airline’s regulations, rough handling, or accidental damage? Have you ever entered Indonesia with your Brompton? I wonder if the custom at the airport will impose import duty. Thank you.
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 2 жыл бұрын
@@rider2731 What I do I actually put cut up of cardboard inside the bag to give more protection to the bike. Just an idea... Otherwise the only damage I have suffered in the past is a couple of times having the rack stays slightly bent due to the handling on or off the plane. What I always do since then is fit a couple of large sponges on the folded rack at the base of the packed bike. These help in case the bike is put down with a little force... Just say you are bike touring and you shouldn't have any problems with your bike at customs.

Another great adventure Gianni. Curious question or two, do you just lock the brompton when you visit attractions and what/or how do you pack it when flying?Is the Eurovelo marked on maps or just follow road signs? Love the soundtrack how it matches the footage :)
@BromptonTraveler
@BromptonTraveler 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patrick. I try to match my visit to attractions ( mostly in towns or cities ) with a night stay in a place where I can leave the bike without worrying too much while I do my sightseeing. Otherwise trying to leave it locked in a restaurant you have a meal or at a cafe is a good alternative. When touring you have luggage on the bike which makes it a little awkward to leave it unattended for long...That is a limitation of bike touring. Winds as you say are mostly north to south but I heard winter, which is when I went, they are a mix and that is what I have found out. First half in Algarve they were mostly east to west and south to north, further up I got a bit of everything. Anyway your electric will come in handy so nothing to worry too much about! Something most bike tourers will tell you is that, even on your first ride, the nervousness and worries will disappear as you start to cycle. I would advise only to be comfortable fixing a puncture, especially rear tyre as it is a bit more complicated on Brompton. I believe one of my videos explain that. I have also videos explaining how implan and follow my route with mobile. Coming to the worse Brompton are the best bikes to hitch hike if needed or jumping on a bus!

@BromptonTraveler 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, not having any experience with both it is hard for me to guess. Titanium if you can afford it should be very resistant and lighter but unless money to you is no issue I feel that you are spending a lot to save little weight. If you plan to tour with it you are carrying around 15 kg or luggage or so and I am not sure that you would notice that much the difference if your bike was a couple of kg lighter. Personally I would rather spend the extra money to get better equipment ( clothing, camping gear, etc ).

@@BromptonTraveler Certainly worth a visit. I nearly chose Portugal same time as you but Gran Canaria won instead because it was warmer. Was supposed to go same time as you to escape the cold and wet UK weather, but postponed until mid April. Should still be nice in GC but not very hot like summer. I was going take my Brompton to Gran Canaria but decided not to as 1) it is very mountainous and steep steep hills 2) I would like to ride some of the off road trails which I think the Brompton might struggle with especially if sandy. Originally I had booked to go with Brompton but changed to add full sized bike which is £90 return with EJ!!!!! I am starting to think maybe I should just have stuck with taking my Brompton. Less hassle than taking a full sized non folding bike. The Brompton can do a lot more than you realise.

Hello Anna, wonderful plan! October should also be a very nice time with good temperatures for cycling. Eurovelo 1 is mostly well signed, especially the north and further down after Lisbon. In the Algarve there are places that are not well marked. I suggest you download a gps and have maps downloaded on your phone if you can, for times your are not sure. Go here euroveloportugal.com/en/route/eurovelo1 and you will find all sections gpx files to download. Otherwise asking is always a good option and getting lost a little is part of the fun. Having an electric bike will help you. Some parts of eurovelo 1 are a bit sandy and too close to the beach…I was advised to avoid a section south of Figueira de Foz because of it and I went inland for a couple of days and visited Coimbra (well worth it) to avoid it. I bought two bromptons for myself and my son, now I'm collecting information about things to take with me. What worries me the most right now is the weight of things, I saw a mention in your video that your front bag weighs 6.5 kg and your back bag weighs 6 kg, could you clarify whether this is the weight of the bags themselves? I am also interested in the black bag that you advised on Amazon to protect the bike during flights, I looked at the weight on Amazon and it is 1 kg or is it really so? also the front bag of brompton weighs 1.3 kg, which is also quite a lot of weight, the backpack itself is another 1 kg. in your video you showed the weight of a big black bag with brompton and things 22.6kg, to this weight you need to add the weight of the hand luggage bag that you take with you on the plane your backpack exped? correctly I understand the total weight will be 22.6kg + 6kg backpack exped?

Many thanks and hope your Brompton will get good use then! Weight is of course something to consider and you are not able to take a lot more than I do on a folding bike. I think those weights on front and rear are roughly accurate and include bag and content; they do vary slightly depending on the season. If touring cold countries you must keep warm first and that means heavier clothes, a warmer sleeping bag and so on. Most of the weight besides the few tools and clothes I carry is camping equipment. If you plan a tour with indoor accommodation that would cut it down by half or so. Ideally leave some space empty especially in the front bag as you will need to carry some food and at times more water than you planned. Enjoy your rides.

Sorry I had missed the last part of your comment! Yes the bag I showed with bike and other things gets checked in and all the rest goes on the backpack as you say. My bike with rack on its own is around 14kg. In my last few trips I haven't bothered with black bag and only carried it inside an IKEA bag. I do carry another of those bags as a spare even though they are really sturdy for being so cheap...

@@BromptonTraveler thanks for the answer, maybe in the future you will be able to make a table such as excel file where there is a list of your equipment and weight to understand what exactly you need to take with you and where you can save weight. weight is very important because only bags weigh 3.5 kg without things and brompton itself 13 kg, if you are an adult and you need for example to make a transfer by train or bus, not to mention the plane where you will need even more time to carry their packages is a possible but not an easy test, but also many people are traveling or planning to travel with women or teenagers who will find it very difficult to carry 20-30kg, now I am trying to figure out where I can save weight such as one tent for two, one set for bicycle repair, one first aid kit, etc. the black bag that goes on top of the ikea bag when I saw the weight of 1kg shocked me a bit, but as far as I understand it is also needed to accommodate a tent, spare wheels.

@@mr.denoli7749 Having a 2 men tent and 1 set of tools makes a lot of sense to me if you travel together. As mentioned you can do without the black bag. The main reason I was using it was to conceal that I had a bike inside as Dimpa bags are somewhat transparent. But putting the bike into a black bin bag first for example hides it and I have found enough space to put a 2 men tent inside the dimpa bag plus tools, sleeping bag and whatever you can fit into the small spaces you find. All items are carried are shown on that 3 part videos I have done on packing bike, backpack etc. Also bear in mind that we are all different and what is not as important to me might be essential to you. Cheers

Hi, no worries. What I use is the simple and standard Brompton 6 speed ( reduced ratio ) with a rear rack to carry the backpack the way I do. Camera I use my iPhone and a GoPro Black 7 for the filming on the bike. Cheers.
