Quick question, how did Latins in outremer generally view mamlukes. Was there every any pitty for them considering most were once Christian or did they see them similar to how Saracens saw Templars?

he was already controling the region of lisbon since 1140, when the first attempt to conquer the city failed, the arabs payed him a tribute since 1142 not to raid the region, he was very active and the arabs had lost its control since that time. it was a matter of time (when more "crusaders" passed ) till lisbon fell into Afonso hands.

Dom Afonso Henriques, warrior king and father of the Portuguese nation, is laid to rest in a fairly modest tomb, along side his son, Dom Sancho I, in the Igreja da Santa Cruz, Coimbra. The tombs are hidden behind the altar and when I went to pay my respects in the empty church, I was surprised to find them covered in cobwebs and dust, forgotten by the nation they founded. But Portugal is the land were secrets go to vanish, so it's only fitting that the warrior king and father of the nation, rests in peace, where no one will disturb him. Free to fade away under the layers of time. Portugal 🇵🇹. The most epic little country on the planet.

M Ra They’ve been in Portugal since 1128. Educated our first king, Alfonso I and with him participated in the “Reconquista”. In return, they were given 1/3 of the Portuguese total territory and the city of Tomar became their headquarters. When they returned to Portugal after being prosecuted in France in the 14th century, they financed the Portuguese “Age of Discovery” with not only money but knowledge (ship building techniques, Star-oriented navigation they had learned from the Muslims, etc) They made all the difference

@Mrsergiosaturn
@Mrsergiosaturn 4 жыл бұрын
@@BrunoDeMarques Compreendo. No entanto continuo a manter a minha posição.

Afonso Henrique was the son of count D.Henrique of Burgundy , a personal friend ( and some even say vassal ) of Godofredo of Bouillon, the 1st king of Jerusalem, his father went to Jerusalem twice, and even before the brought some relics Godofredo gave him, and even before the knits Templar were officially formed by Hugo de Payens, they were "given" lands at Condado Portucalense which would be soon the birthplace of Portugal, unfortunately, his father died at 53 while he was still 7 years old, but because his tutors were templars, he followed his father plan at the age of 14, rebelling against his mother side of the family, the king of Leon, so Portugal was a nation formed by templars for the templars, and long after they were disbanded all over the world, they stayed here under a different name at the city of Tomar

Only one thing.. Afonso ruled with the Portugal's Templairs. In a way that they really understood each other.. because even.. there were the same.. Portugal's Kings were all iniciated in the Order.. Afonso had the Byzantine Roots of hes father.. The Templairs were created in Jerusalem.. But only after they fought together in Ourique.. And created Portugal Bernardo de Claraval helped introduce the Order in the Catholic Church... only after What I'm trying to say.. Is that the Portugal's King's Where iniciated in the Order.. So all the contact with the Catholic Church Was really more burocratic then the Real Thing More than 10.000 men.. dont go to sail far away to just then decide for the battle..

Thank you, a fantastic description of that time environment! You are in a good track, maybe one day someone will understand the true importance of the city of Braga, capital of Minho province, where Portugal bornt, where for the first time the Templars arrived in Portugal, how they were offered huge fortunes, in lands, money, houses, titles, farms and priviledges, after all, Braga has 2.000 years old, it was the capital of the ancient Celts Bracarae, capital of the Roman Gallaecea province and capital of the Germanics Swabians, also where Sir Gualdim de Payns had his home, where theres still exists a non explored tunnel between his house, the millennial Braga cathedral and the Populum, but the Treasure of the Braga Sé, it is the most hidden secret of Portugal! The three knights Templar from Burgundy who came to Minho and build Portugal, strangely their families are the original Templars blood!

Crismark Flores No ,baldwin the 4th was a leper ,so he most definitely would NOT be given a wife. Kingdom of Heaven movie is not historically accurate .Take anything you see in that movie with a pinch of salt.

This was indeed one of the important part in the alliance's history and birth. But of course just this wouldn't be nearly enough.

Kind of it began in the days of the Roman Empire when parts of Morocco was conquered by Rome and the conquered province was called Mauritania which in time became Morocco during the Moslem conquest.

@@carterbentonjr399 but "Morocco" is a European word, because Moroccans themselves call their country Maghreb
