Ghost81 actually butterfly is a VERY common song to see in bootlegs, you'll see it in almost everything bootlegged. One of the most common places is in modern plug n play trite, where you'll hear a chiptune version of it in every bootleg rhythm game. Considering how prevalent this song is, it's not unlikely recent sound chips have been produced

Here in Portugal, Chinese shops are a meme. Everytime you want to trash talk about your friend's clothes/belongings, you say that it's from the Chinese store. Edit: to be honest, I thought that Chinese stores existed all over the world.

They do exist. Here in Serbia there are bunch of them, but over the time they moved "up market" with quality in a way. They even offer some domestically produced solid products, like plastic food containers, soap dispensers, that sort of thing, even metal cockware.

Meanwhile you have those similar Chinese shops at British seaside resorts which I have seen and witnessed. It isn’t just Portugal. We even have pop up bootleg shops at Christmas markets.

Oh my god, I remember that castle, it’s a model that was part of a legitimate play set, and made of better plastic with different furniture and dolls, it had like a rubbery unicorn in it, a lot better made though. It had a back part too so it was like a poly pocket sort of clone. You opened it and it had different floors and balconies etc. Wow that was a blast from the past.

Knock offs were a great childhood in 3rd world countries. I remember having a hollow soft plastic spiderman when I was a kid, only the arms moved and had a gun for some reason (probably a sword too), as soon as I got it to play with it the right arm came off. It was the best gift I had at the time.

Except I'm pretty sure "ponte" means "bridge" in Portuguese, so that would be "bridge (of the) dicks". Once you cross it, you can never go back.

It's very similar, but the old one was part of a bigger castle toy set, they just disassembled one big castle toy and sold each part separately, gave it new packaging, and sold them in Poundland

I far prefer flip phones, they're pocketable in even the tiniest or tightest of pockets, they have physical buttons, their batteries are easily detachable for when one is feeling slightly paranoid, and they don't usually break when dropped on the ground from a reasonable height. Japan has the right idea with "Galapagos" phones, older style cell phones but with some smartphone-like features.

I had a Samsung flip phone but can't use it anymore (well, not as a phone at least) as all the main telecom providers in Canada shut down their CDMA networks. I see the Rugby family is LTE so they should work in Canada. Maybe I'll get one sometime, thanks for the recommendation.

I went to Portugal back in 2014 - the hotel I stayed in was nice, but it was so far away from anywhere that most of the money went towards taxis XD On the plus side, despite being euros, everything was a HELL of a lot cheaper compared to Ireland.

As a Portuguese Canadian, I was happy to see some of that Chinese store tat from Portugal on here. Whenever I'm back there on vacation, I always love walking into to one of those Chinese shops and always having a giggle at the tat. They make the Dollaramas here in Canada look like supermarkets. You would definitely love it. I think a trip is in order for you, Stuart. =) Been a fan for very many years, keep it up.

Today Ashens shows cheap stuff being sold in my country, and today I thought of Ashens when I saw the Kinder Joy TV ad here in Portugal and their toy is emoji figures. I used to shop for knock off stuff a lot. I once got a TMNT bike that had a flint on the back wheel so it would leave sparks when moving, indeed it was a moving fire hazard. I like how the sticker on the robot box that says "batteries included" has the prominent text in big letters in Spanish, and "pilas" in Portuguese is the slang for dicks (Pila = dick, in Portuguese batteries would be pilha[s] which can be seen on the top of the sticker in smaller print), which is fairly fun when we see one of those.

Probably just me being a bit thick, but apart from the box mentioning "CHINESE", what was so alarmingly bad about the child's bottle? Seemed fairly well made?

The quality of the stuff in Chinese shops is just terrible. Most of their stuff is done as cheaply as possible, which means that the materials used might actually be a bit harmful if a baby were to drink from it. Or the bottle / nipple could just get ruined real fast with the warm milk, or from just being washed with hot water. I'm not even joking, this wouldn't be surprising.

The assumption is that the way stuff gets cheap is by ditching quality standards. In reality it's primarily by cutting wages and workplace quality, but product standards are a close second for the cheaper stuff.

You can't "ditch quality standards" when you have no standards to begin with. I don't mean Chinese products are bad; some are great. It's just that there are literally no _standards._ The same manufacturer can use great materials one day and crap materials the next.

Spain is too, don't worry. They're worth going into for DIY tools like screws and nails and hammers and shit though. Sell them cheap and they're fairly industry standard so you don't get nails that break in half or whatever.

We had a couple of those Gundam knock-offs when I was a kid. We lived under the poverty line. I want to say 15 to 20 years ago. I was Shocked to see they do even worse versions now. I don't remember ours being hollow on the back. I'd recognize that generic mess of colors on the inside of that box anywhere. We used it as a tray of some sorts for years.
