/ extraashens for all your... extra... Ashens needs. Yes.
Time for the Gamate. The handheld gaming system which should have used the tagline "You've never heard of it!"
More obscure than an unpublished novel written by a 17th century Bavarian peasant who immediately ate the manuscript on completion then dropped dead, the Gamate offers low-level Gameboy-style fun together with really bad screen ghosting. And a horrible tinny speaker.
Due to them costing a fortune, only two games appear in the video - Brick Blaster, in which you don't blast bricks but smash them with a ball, and Dino Ball, which appears to feature no dinosaurs whatsoever.
But hey, at least the games come on nifty looking cards!

I had one of these as a child. It was a lot of fun, I had about 20 games. Anyway. If you stick a fork or any metal cutlery into the external adaptor port while playing brick blaster, you will get unlimited lives. True story, don't ask me how I discovered it!!!!

I had one of these as a kid. They were sold at Target in Australia during the mid 90s when Asia presumably didn’t want them anymore :-) The tetris clone and a port of vindicators were the highlights.

One of those annoying things, I have a memory, of a Finnish computer magazine (MikroBitti) in 19XX, which had an article about this system. I remember the layout, the colors, but not what they thought about it. Nothing pleasant, I fear.

Actually my cousin had one of these and it worked pretty good. The ghosting is not as bad through the naked eye. Ashen had to look at it through the camera and a weird angle. I remember brick blaster on the Gameboy was awful cause of the ghosting. But then Pokemon came out and the Gay...Mate... had to go.

My cousin had bought one in 1991 or so. It sucked ass, the screen failed to keep up with the games, so the only thing you saw most of the time was a blurry mess.

One of the few of this sort of system that actually shows potential. A higher-quality speaker and a bit better screen could've made this a very reasonable little device for its time, and probably a half-decent competitor to the Game Boy.

Nice! I had one of those when I was a kid, but later on sold it to a friend because I needed money for a Gameboy (which I later traded for a crappy Atari Lynx, but thats another story). I kinda regret that I sold it, but now I remember how much it sucked :) By the way, I really like your videos Ashen, you are very entertaining. Keep up the great work.

It still annoys me that things like this can have a fully functional normal Headphone jack....but the Gameboy Advance SP didn't. I will never understand. And since it's the only GBA I have, it's a bit annoying. Wtf Nintendo?

They wanted you to buy their special headphones with a proprietary jack because it gets them more money. IIRC GBA original did have a normal headphone jack. That and/or because of how tiny it already was, they didn't want to jam a 3.5mm jack onto it. Actually, looking at mine right now, there's not a lot of good places the jack could go without causing issues. Put it on the left or right sides and it's pressing into your hand as you play. Bottom is entirely taken up by the cartridge slot, and top is entirely taken up by the L+R buttons, charger port, and accessory port. They might could've jammed a 3.5mm there but it would've been a squeeze.

Every Nintendo handheld before and since the sp (including the micro) had a headphone jack. Having opened one up, it's certainly possible it wouldn't fit - there's a lot going on for such a small board.

The quality of this unit is so much better than the Chinese ripoff units you reviewed, this one actually looks somewhat legit and like the games were properly made (for the time). Googled it, oh it's from Taiwan and not China, makes sense now, yes the Taiwanese seem to make things way more legit than the Chinese. I was thinking the whole time, this thing is just a little too well done to be Chinese, lol.

That pinball game's physics...so BAD; It just seems to shoot the ball at whatever angle the flipper sends it flying and gravity never takes over until it hits something above it, then it falls STRAIGHT down until it hits the bottom; Even *I* could make a better pinball game than that!

Dino ball's physics look utterly bizarre. It loses all horizontal momentum when it drops below a certain threshold. Someone must have intentionally made it do that. Or perhaps the momentum values are really low resolution and the ghosting is doing a LOT of work to smooth it out when it's arcing.
