I think the point of this video has been lost on some so just to clarify...we loved our time in Positano but I know not everyone will love it. This video is a resource for people researching whether it is the right destination for them.

Ok. I was 64 when I visited the Amalfi Coast. I was lucky to have done it last September to October. So, I'm originally from Puerto Rico and I had made plans to visit this part of Italy in early December 2018. I decided I wanted the off season, for obvious reasons, so September 2019 sounded great. When the time came I couldn't find anyone to travel with me. But, I decided to go anyway. My daughter thought I should wait, (glad I didn't). She thought her mom was crazy, (come on, you've known me for a whole lifetime). Ok, so I rented a Fiat 5000 in Napoli, after spending 7 days in Rome. When I got to the Amalfi Coast, I felt like I was in a James Bond movie. My hotel was in Furore, which I totally recommend (Hotel Holiday Fico d'India). I had heard that driving there was sort of like a nightmare. Not for me!! I learned to drive in Puerto Rico and I thought it was hilarious, all the traffic jams, the buses and all the traffic laws, which I learned before going.I just took my time to enjoy the view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. I did go to Positano, and after going around a lot, I found a parking space. Yes, there are lots of stairs, lots of walking, but I was so amazed by the beauty that I didn't feel the pain until I got back to my hotel Loved every minute, challenged myself to go up those stairs and find a beautiful church, a piazza and very tempting ceramics stores. I'm ready to go back!!!!!

I have visited Positano Italy twice and absolutely loved it both times!!!

The Amalfi Coast is so much more than just Positano. Ravello is stunningly beautiful, remarkably peaceful and one of my favorite places in all of Italy. The walk from Ravello to Atrani offers amazing views that change about 3 minutes (many many steps so if bad knees be aware). Amalfi town is less glitzy than Positano so I chose to stay there for my three nights. In terms of the stressful driving the solution is don't drive. The instant cure for stress is the water so take the train from Rome to Salerno (via Naples) and then take a boat to Amali-Positano. The view of the AC from the water is spectacular. Of course the other key to reduced stress travel is to pack light. For me, the Amalfi Coast is a can't miss destination. Give it the time it deserves. Much like Capri, it deserves more than a day trip and it a perfect place to relax and recharge after the total adrenalined filled cities of Naples and Rome. My number one tip for visiting Italy than rarely gets mentioned is to WAKE UP EARLY !!! You have the rest of your life to sleep in late but to practically have Italy to yourself... wake up early and be on the streets at sunrise. Whether it's Rome or a small village, having a couple of hours where the only people on the streets are locals cleaning streets or making deliveries or opening bakeries is a total different experience. In addition, the changing light and lack of people will set your photos apart from the average touristy shots.

My suggestion is: Stay in Sorrento and go to Positano by boat to spend the day.

Just came back from Praiano and Positano spending 10 days. I am a wheelchair user and a very experienced one. I would never recommend going there if you have mobility issues bbut this was absolutely worth it for me. We hired a driver for exploring the Amalfi coast and just pushed the city slopes with frequent stops for drinks and lemon sorbet. Just beautiful and one more tick on the bucket list.

I spend every summer there since i was child cause i m italian and honestly i always appreciate the beauty of this place..some people just don t know how to organize a good holiday in terms of money.. so for me it Will be always one of the best place in italy :)

Hi guys I' m an italian and I really appreciate this video. I think that the majority of tourists sometimes when you visit Italy you make some mistakes. First of all every touristic place could me incredible but if there are millions of people there , the same place will not have the same atmosphere, u will find high prices, bad service, people rude. I will suggest to avoid the most famous place and try instead other destinations. When you are doing a reserch try to write what you really like to do instead of best spot in italy. So for example if you like mountains they are everywhere and they can be' better than Austria or Switzerland ( Dolomiti are the best but Also Valtellina Valle d'Aosta or some national Park like Parco Nazionale del Grand Paradiso or parco nazionale d'Abruzzo. If you like big Lakes there is not only Lago di Garda or Lago di Como but also Lago Maggiore, lago d'Iseo e Lago d'Orta and you could find and very quite rest. Nightlife go in the summer in Emilia Romagna. The best beaches are in Sardinia and Puglia They are big regions take your time and explore them. Also Calabria Sicily have nice beaches and they are cheaper. If you want test wines you can go to Toscana but also Pidmont region in Monferrato and Langhe is probally the best. If you like Toscany explore Umbria and Marche or Abruzzo. LAST If you like to visit a historical and art city you can find amazing towns everywhere instead to visit only in Venezia Firenze Roma

Guys, I respect you so much for the time and work you poured into this - the quality of images and editing is amazing, and I'm sure you put this together with the best intentions. However, I'm very sad to say that the final result is in my opinion unfortunately just quite disappointing. I'm a born and raised in Italy tour leader who has spent the last 5 years leading tours across Italy on behalf of National Geographic, and today I plan personalized itineraries around the Bel Paese for mainly US travelers. I would never ever recommend renting a car in the Amalfi Coast. It's not just dangerous, but it's also practically impossible to find a parking spot and if you do, as rightly pointed out in your video, it will cost you a fortune. This is simply not a reason not to visit Positano, but just a bad move on your end - maybe you underestimated the challenge of renting a car? There are plenty of affordable ways to travel around the Amalfi Coast - by ferry for example, or by bus! Ferries work quite well and at a very affordable price. More importantly, you would get to see the Amalfi Coast from the sea, which is the only way in my opinion to truly grasp the beauty of this impossibly beautiful place. As for prices in Positano, you need to consider you went to the most overcrowded, popular place in the whole Amalfi Coast area. This area stretches for over 20 miles and it's ALL beautiful - in my opinion, your main mistake here is to focus on Positano, while the most gorgeous, enjoyable gems can be found all over the big coastline: Praiano, Ravello, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, Vietri a Mare... not to mention that just around the corner you can visit the stunning Sorrento peninsula! Positano IS expensive, just like it is every very exclusive place (think of Capri, Portofino and so on). Even though the town is expensive, you had a meal in probably one of the most touristy spots in the town. There are a few amazing delis and small sandwich shops around town that would work perfectly well for a very affordable and enjoyable meal. The last point, where you stated that the place is not unique, almost killed me. You mentioned Tellaro, which is a tiny tiny little town in Liguria right next the Cinque Terre. It's like comparing Siena to Rome - completely different experiences. Your videos show how locals were able to build an incredibly charming town in Positano in such challenging conditions over the centuries. The town literally looks like a nativity scene. I took my groups to the Cinque Terre dozens of times and there is absolutely no comparison with the Amalfi Coast. The stunning Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello, the gorgeous lemon farms, the ceramic signs everywhere, the Saracen defensive towers (one of them turned into an amazing art studio!), the grottos and beaches, the Duomo in Amalfi, the walk of the gods, monasteries and convents turned into stunning hotels, the food... I am under the impression that you really didn't do your research before visiting this area. Once again, I'm so convinced you had the best intentions, but I couldn't help it to not say something...I don't think there is another place in the world like this, a place where nature combines with history, architecture, wine (yes, they make excellent wine in the Amalfi Coast) and food (ever tried a fior di latte - mozzarella sort of- from Agerola?).. to see a video likes this just hurts! Wish you the best for your future videos and I apologize if I sounded rude, I truly wasn't trying to be.

We were in Positano 3 years ago and absolutely loved it!!! We traveled the Amalfi Coast on the ferry and were able to visit a few of the towns along the coast. We took a day trip to Capri which was another stunning place. Can’t wait to go back.

Thanks for the video! Traveling during Covid is, in some ways, such a treat due to a lack of crowds! Another remarkable Italian Riviera I recommend is Liguria. I married a man from Savona and am now so familiar with the region. It also has the vertical beauty of the Amalfi Coast, but a different feel to it, which is unique to the area.

I'm Irish, living in Thailand for many years ... but it is Italy I long to tour. The combination of history, beauty, food, music and culture must be unparalleled.

I am respecting Travel Beans advice even more this week. I am here in Amalfi in the middle of March and it is rocking. Half of the cafes are closed but the squares and streets are full of people. I got here in the 5120 bus and we took 85 minutes to go 23 kilometers because the roads were so tight and so busy. In March. I CAN NOT IMAGINE what it is like in high season. Sometimes we destroy, or really blight, that which we love the most. This is a BEAUTIFUL coast and it would look a lot better with a lot less people like me and you.

I can relate to the driving aspect. I caught the local bus and had an absolute blast watching how the driver manouvered through the narrow roads.

Nailed it! There are many beautiful destinations available to us. Sadly most of us have limited resources and time. There is value in eliminating places to go. Positano is one of my most memorable visits from the 90's. I loved driving on the roads, and walking the many steps from the hotel to the beach. The food was great. But I was luckily not there during peak season, and I know that I would not have had a good experience there if I had. I have to say that the prices don't seem that high to me considering it is Positano. This video make me want to return someday. But not during peak season for sure. I went there driving a Fiat Panda and it was perfect, I absolutely loved it. For the people with stress, it is better to see the glass half full.

Had you travelled by a boat your trip would have been way less stressful and much more pleasant. I had a great time and no stress at all visiting both places Positano and Amalfi by a boat from Salerno. And the bonus was that the views of the coast were stunning from the boat.

Great video, guys. We went just barely before high season was really under way...on the Amalfi about May 12-15. This helped in a big way with the lower volume traffic and crowds. Also found a great hotel with spectacular view in much cheaper Praiano which is between Positano and town of Amalfi. This allowed us to still go explore Positano and was also a good base to drive to Pompei, Capri, etc. Just a couple tips for those contemplating a visit.

We stayed 3 days in Positano in 2018. We did the ferry to Capri and then a private boat tour with swims at the grottoes. I can't wait to go back! Loved your video. xx

We visited Positano in July 2017 and it was BEAUTIFUL despite the heat and crowds. We took the public bus from Sorrento along the Amalfi coast and stopped for a few hours in Positano. It was definitely worth it. You’re right about the road bends and curves. I would recommend taking the public bus and yes, definitely a couple of days. Would love to visit Positano again.

I did a house exchange in Positano when I was 60+ years old. There were 100 steps between the closest car park and our house. The view was, as you say, spectacular, but we finally had to leave early because the stairs were just too much for us. We also found the place 1000% touristy, which wasn't wonderful, and the prices hair-raising. I've been back to the Amalfi Coast several times since then; I now avoid Positano. Your video was 100% fair and accurate. Next time, try Ravello, which is somewhat better. The pottery shops are spectacular in Vietri --and MUCH cheaper than in Positano..

We spent 5 days each in all of the main points across Italy in May 2017 ( best time of year to visit) celebrating our 25th wedding Anniversary. Positano and the Amalfi Coast was a highlight. We travelled the Amalfi coast from Solerno by water. One day it was too rough to be on the water, so our trip to Amalfi from Positano had to be by Sita bus, it was horrific, so travel by water is the way to travel when you can. We stayed in a beautiful villa high above Positano in Montepertuso (there was a bus that took us up and down and does the cycle every 30 mins so it was simple). One day we walked to Nochelle from our villa and did a 6 hour high path hike on the Path of Gods from Nochelle to Bomeranno (amazing), 3000 ft above Priano and the views were great taking,. Walking around Positano was never difficult, if you make it leisurely. We were pleased to be there exploring 5 days and nights around the Amalfi Coast which gave us one full day just lazing on the Positano beach ( a must do). We felt the Amalfi Coast with home base Positano, was so relaxing and a wonderful true Italy on the water experience. The food on the Amalfi Coast is fantastic.. I fully believe Positano and the surrounding Amalfi Coast villages are a must...We cannot wait to return.

I’ve been 3 times and it’s the most beautiful place I’ve yet to travel! I am booked to stay two weeks in an apartment down by the beach for two glorious weeks this July. Due to Covid, it’s not likely going to happen! I will then push it to July 2022. Even in summer, I love the Amalfi coast!

I really appreciate the information you have provided. I fell in love with the pictures I had seen. I was planning to rent a car and do a walking tour, but after seeing your video I realize this is the wrong Italian city for me. I am older and have COPD and hate driving in traffic. I have been to Rome so I arrogantly thought I knew Italy but nowhere near enough. Thank you again you saved me from what might have been a disastrous trip.

I rode the coast in 2019 on a scooter and it was awesome! I highly recommend it!

Back in '81(yes, 1981!), we drove down from London to Greece. The only place we hit traffic and managed to crash (a knock really, no - one was hurt) was Amalfi! If only you'd asked me I'd have told you to find alternative transport!

As a foreigner who hasnt been to italy i would still wanted to go there even this video say "dont go". Living in the city is too much and this place for me is a gold.

Italy is a beautiful country from top to toe, I would recommend to visit all over the country as it has more to offer than just Positano. Yes it can get crowded BUT it is still a amazing place to visit all year around. Italy gets so many tourists and is one of the top countries to visit you just need to know how to adapt and RELAX as seen by the Italians who are amazing at it. So instead of complaining in a British negative way for attention you should admire what the country as a whole has to offer. I’m sure that Positano looks better than any other place you find in the UK especially your home town.

One video to say some very obvious things for an Italian (e.g. narrow streets, lack of parking etc.). Cities in Italy, starting with Rome, were built hundreds even thousands of years ago when cars did not exist. Positano was a fishing village and not a tourist attraction for KZfaqrs. If you want to visit Positano by car these are the problems you must expect.

Very good presentation. Unlike many, you did 'not' walk around holding the selfie on yourselves and hiding the scenery around you. You focused on the scenery and utilised a few 'interview' style shots when speaking about different aspects. Refreshing. Now I have a better idea of where to travel in southern Italy in the future.

I would love to clarify some points. Positano it’s a stunning town but it’s small, so clearly there aren’t as many parking lots as in a big city, this is pretty obvious. And you can easily take a bus or just rent a driver if you can’t drive. The road is narrow because it’s a coastal town, we can’t certainly build a highway along one of the most beautiful and panoramic view of the world. The prices are appropriate for the beauty of the place. If we made a mass tourism, we would quickly destroy its charming, exclusive atmosphere. There are so many places where you can go on vacation if you are on the budget, in Italy or somewhere else. Thanks God Positano is not for everyone.

We had a stunningly nice visit last year (2019). We stayed in Amalfi town, which was a perfect base for further exploring, and had both great points of interests (duomo, paper museum, etc.) as well as shops and restaurants, and it doesn't require the leg muscles of a mountain goat. It's also a center for the buses and ferries. We stayed at Residenza Luca, which we just loved: not expensive, super cute, right on the main strip next to Da Gemma (yum!!!) and the duomo, and with fantastically friendly and attentive service. More suggestions: The SITA bus is inexpensive, easy and efficient to travel along the coast as long as you're at the bus stop early. We took it from Amalfi to Salerno to catch the fast train to Rome ... easy! There is also a super convenient tourist red bus with no roof from Amalfi to Ravello, a short hop for something like 5 euro. Ravello is NOT to be missed! The views from the two big villas there are unbelievable. Last tip: most travel guides mention getting to Amalfi by car or a bus or a ferry from Sorrento or Salerno. There is another way: drive or taxi over the mountains to Ravello and down to Amalfi. We used that route for a day trip up to Pompeii.

Positano is one of those places, not only in Italy, that should have a rigid touristic limited access, due to its peculiar narrow configuration.

Ha, I have to laugh when you mentioned the price of a pizza, and it being 3 times more expensive that other places in Italy. I live in NZ, that’s regular for over here, and the pizza’s aren’t even authentic, My view is, if you can’t afford holiday luxuries, then stay home until you can, there’s nothing worse than having to stress and count pennies. Italy is too beautiful to be worrying about whether you can afford it, especially the Amalfi Coast region

At first I wanted to say - How dare anyone say not to visit Positano which is absolutely an awesome and special place! But after watching your video I can see what you were getting at. Yes its expensive and very crowded etc but honestly it is so very special. And sometimes you just have to spend a little more for the experience and deal with the spoils that come with popular tourist places. For me - I will always come back to Positano and the Amalfi coast area.

When in a Restaurant you're not paying for the food, you're really paying for the view!

No, I completely agree with the essence of this video and it’s much appreciated! I just visited end of September 2021 and of course thought Positano was absolutely gorgeous but I couldn’t stand all the tourists and the crowds (even in off season) and thought it had this fake vibe like Disneyland or Vegas. I’m so grateful I didn’t splurge to stay there, it’s lovely but I much preferred a quieter and more beach friendly town down the Amalfi Coast. I was shocked how much I didn’t care for it… it’s a beautiful postcard but a lot of hassle and nonsense and douchey people. I heard more English than Italian… it just wasn’t what I was expecting but I’m so glad I experienced it and would visit again but definitely never stay there.

Sorry forgot to say, all our 70+ year olds do the stirs every day, some have 80-200 stairs to get back home from street level, and they are all healthy and fit from that thing called EXERCISE 😂

I used to live and work there, and I'd say you've given it a accurate review, only thing you missed was the steps, far too many people visit and are shocked a vertical cliff side town has steps.

La bellezza che trovi in ogni luogo e borgo d'Italia sta proprio nella sua unicità, nel fatto che non ci sono stradoni enormi ed enormi fabbricati con centri commerciali e fast food. Io, come italiana, trovo quasi offensivo questo video. Si può preferire un luogo ad un altro, ma asserire che è meglio non visitare un luogo è ignoranza. E mi riferisco a qualsiasi luogo su questo pianeta.

The best way to explore any of the coastal regions of Italy is by sea, charter a 10m sailing cruiser, with a crew if not a sailor, and to explore away from the port hire a Vespa or even a Piaggio Ape (Italian tuc tuc). Stay safe 👸🧔💋💋
