The all day you said for Jan 7th appears to be a prerecording we watch? I'm confused. I want to do this but I want to know what I am signing up for so I'm not disappointed - tho you never disappoint. Thanks so much. Tho I've made many changes from your videos. Dawn, I still need help! How can this merge with disability needs - pain makes it harder to commit and stay committed. Is there support for disabled folx on your fb group? Thanks.

@@AmethystWoman good question! The all day declutter takes place live in a private Facebook group so participants can watch it in Facebook or we post it to the course directly following each hour. So it is all new content on January 7 and you can decide if you watch it in Facebook or in the course. @@TheMinimalMom fast response! I tell people about you all the time. I explained the idea of inventory to my sisters. One who said "I know where every paperclip is in my house." As a thrower outer an organized listmaker I'm sure she does. The sister who talks about clutter in others, has, well, no room to talk. 😁 but I have very little support or real.encouragement. It's like being committed to quit smoking when all you hear is you'll never be able to do it, right? I'm all in! Decluttering is my entire goal for this year. I wish people would do this! I have kids so we especially get so much stuff. One grandparent used my Amazon wish list and got over $300 worth of stuff! It was insane. So I want those things but I didn't want them all at once ya kn? Gift receipts would have been nice. I could return things that are for later on in development and kept the things I really wanted right now. Same with another side of the family. They got my kids clothing and stuffies. I get most of the clothing on buy nothing so I don't really need any clothes. Pro top though, you can exchange at Carter's without gift receipts for same day in store value. I was able to get my daughter some nightgowns for potty training as well as character shirts for motivating her as prizes. That's my issue. When people do that it's like they don't listen or hear me out they just pick out random things THEY like and hope you will too. Or things that don't hold much value for anyone. And it's sad because I look around their home and they have all these things. Scads and scads of stuff they don't need. I'm also a little sad about the $300 grandparent because at Thanksgiving we had a convo about experience gifts and keeping things cheaper. Next year I'm gonna put a cap on it at 4 things max. It's just too much stuff at once to manage even though I want it all technically.

Yes, 1 in & 1 out..is what I do. I immediately decide if I like the gift or I bless someone else with it. I donate immediately. I only use or wear things I like otherwise they go out. Being a senior I decided I didn't want my children to have to go through my things. I didn't want to burden them with this. I donated 8 truck loads of things to 4 different donation sites. Watching so many of my clients dealing with their parent’s property, which often included their grandparent’s stuff too, and the emotional toll it took on them, I decided not to burden my children with our decades-long accumulation of possessions. Oh man. I want to reread your post. I'm a newbie senior but have never.been able to make a house into a home, that's what this is about for me. A home rather than a cluttered building. Living far away from me, my sister told me Christmas day when I die, they will hire someone to go in and throw out all my stuff. Definitely hurt but that is the reality. They don't want any of my stuff. They don't have room for their own stuff. I reacted badly inside. I felt hurt and angry that they didnt care about me, but that's reality. I also need to do it for me. Not attached to anything? Hmm.

The most amazing thing that happened with my family on my in-laws side is we draw names (for adults only), put a 50$ limit and give gift ideas in a google doc everyone has access to. I LOVE it because you know what you are getting for that person they actually want it and everyone is happy with their present. I wish we had done it earlier.

The first year I started that on both sides with a $20 tag people griped. The next year people felt challenged to get a gift within budget because it was easy to make it happen at $50. Then we had a couple kids who were 16 want to join instead of waiting until 18, it became a rite of passage instead of who had turned 16 announcing the gifts. By year three the kids also wanted to exchange gifts and we also decided to bring a container of cookies to exchange. Best thing I did for my family.

Love Cas’ comment about decluttering BEFORE the holidays. This has been our tried and true method for the last few years. Our family rule is that Santa can’t bring new presents until we let go of the old presents. Every year we use Thanksgiving weekend to go through our closets, toy boxes, drawers, etc. and make a big donation box. We take a moment to be thankful for what we have, and for the fact that we are blessed enough to pass on what is no longer serving us. This helps teach the kids (and a good reminder for us too) to be grateful for what they have and to be charitable to others.

I'm just starting! My 12 Days of Christmas starts on Christmas Eve and goes on till Epiphany on Jan 6th! My tree, my decorations, my Christmas dishes stay out until then. Those 12 days give me time to "rest into Christmas", to enjoy peacefulness and gratefulness. I'll probably put these tips into practice on Jan 6th. Of course, wrappings and boxes are already taken care of. Happy Nativity and Happy New Year!

I decided many years ago to get rid of the traditional Christmas decorations and use more natural all winter decorations. Natural looking garlands w/berries, wooden carved deer, bear, etc, trees w/lights, but decorated w/berries and twist pine cones in branches, snowmen, nice full looking fake poinsettias, etc. I’ll even swap framed pictures for winter themed. Then I leave everything up til Spring, til the end of February or early March. I love the cozy warmth that decor yields all winter. It’s just way too much work to drag it all out for such a short time. My now grown daughters actually do the same thing n their homes. We also initially decorate 2-3 weeks before Thanksgiving. Wow! For us it brings a calm soothing joy to the holidays and winter, cutting the mad dash tremendously. We also try to complete gifts/wrapped & everything a week before Thanksgiving. We LOVE this routine. Makes baking and and other preps calm and entirely enjoyable. I feel it allows me to focus on Christ’s birth and not the dash of worldly material setups and chores, feeling overwhelmed, rushed and exhausted. This was also our 1st yr not buying gifts. We organized activities to make stronger memories instead. All loved it and we’ll do again next year. I’m all for minimizing stuff, but my husband and I have worked far too hard to end up living w/scraps. Material items can be a great blessing if u have bought wisely & they make you truly happy.

Christmas is specific to a miraculous day, The birth of Jesus Christ. With His birth, death and resurrection there would be no entry into heaven for any of us. I’ve only changed my celebration Christmas decorations so I can extend my tolerance of decorations and the efforts through the cold season. I leave my large nativity up all winter as well. Anyone who reads this needs to know your only way into heaven is Trusting and Believing Jesus Christ as your personal Savior & that Jesus is The only way. Salvation is a FREE GIFT Romans 6:23, but the cost was God’s Son. Ask God NOW for forgiveness of your sin, turn ur life over to His Will and accept Jesus as your Savior. If you have never read The Bible, perhaps you will do so this 2023 - a bit each day, beginning to end. Christmas is far more than about decorations.

Thank you, Dawn. This was perfect and exactly what I needed today! I found your videos last December as I sat in the hospital room with my baby who was sick with RSV; I sat in the rocking chair watching your videos for HOURS over 9 days and it felt like an answer to prayer after a full and busy season with a newborn, homeschooling my other 4 and a house that was bursting at the seams. We came home two days before Christmas and I tell you what, after the holiday our house was a disaster. I was so thankful that I had a week of break between Christmas and New Years to work on it- and I had all that motivation your videos had just given me. I didn’t become minimalist that week, but I did get about 1000 items out of our house and knew I wanted to keep going when we had time (I challenged my friends on IG to declutter too, and I was blown away at how many joined me!). Here I am again this year, still feeling like we have way too much stuff, but your videos (and your smaller course which I purchased) are helping and inspiring me to use this week of break once again to make a big change. I nearly cry every time you say “I love you and I hope that you have a great day” at the end of your videos because I feel like I know you now and you’ve been such a help and answer to prayer for me this year. Thank you!!!

Love that "the act of receiving the gift is what matters" from Cas. Yes. Show gratitude, and if it doesn't serve you, pass it on to someone who might benefit. Also LOVE that "it has to be just as easy to put away as it is to leave it out" alongside also making it easy to get out and use in the first place, otherwise you won't use it and it's just junk. And "5 minutes matters" is a great reminder.

Dana's "take it there now" has been extremely helpful, and morphed into"do it as you go along, not waiting for later". Many of us think we are honoring our children by keeping every little thing they make or do, and that they will like having the things in the future. They do not, they are not interested and are stressed out watching bins fill up and stack up with "their" things. Hindsight: involve child and pick one or two favorite items from each year, year end educational summaries only, use the container concept. Representative items, not entire collections or time spans. Then you don't end up with 40 bins they have no interest in. And that is just documents and artwork lol.

Yep. My mum kept a few of my first dresses. I did put them on my daughter to take photos out of pure guilt and obligation. Because they've been kept to long, I put them in my daughters keepsake box. But I've let her wear my 37yo shoes until they fell apart and they went in the bin. My mum also kept my baby cards. I threw out all but 2, one hand made by my sister and one that had my birth time on it. She kept a dusty old newspaper from the day I was born. It made my eyes itch and I sneezed and threw out straight in the recycle. A lot of the things I was keeping as my children's own Keepsakes, I'm now giving to expectant mums, who've looked after my children at day care. That's been such a beautiful experience to see things used and re loved rather than sitting in a box forever.

It is too soon to put all of Christmas away. I don't put up Holiday decorations up extra early. Mine comes down after Epiphany (January 6). There doesn't seem to be such a let down when I do it that way. Plus my daughter's and mother's birthdays are the 26th, my dad's birthday is the 27th and there are still Holiday get-togethers into the New Year.

My Christmas decorations stay up until the first week of February. Both my husband and I love the lights, the sparkle and going through the motions every day of turning all of the lights on. I'd like to pretend that it is because we do not give gifts so there is none of that clutter but, even when we did, we kept our decorations up. We do have two white lighted trees up all year long....every day. We are in our 70's and I am convinced that the lights truly do brighten our days.

The true Christmas season just began! We leave out tree until the epiphany (Jan 6) and the nativity scene until Feb 2 aka the presentation of Jesus at the temple. Keeps a little more of that joy and removes the immediate pressure of removal of decor for legitimate reasons. Although I think the most chaos is just the back up of chores. Laundry that’s not done for days because you’ve beeen out at several family homes instead. That takes forever to get back on track. For me at least. And is overwhelming.

The gift is the “experience”. When my kids were small I would put half the gifts in a bin and bring them back out in a couple of months. If you have space it really helps w the overwhelm. Also once the kids are bored of the other toys then pull those and pull out the other toys. This also helps w getting rid of toys. You can see what the kids don’t really play w.

I have such a difficult time getting rid of home decorations. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment with my husband, our baby, and our dog. I hold onto things thinking it will be used when I have a bigger place. Two things I tell myself to help are 1) Pioneers used to live in a 1 room home, and they had TONS of kids! Me having to share a bedroom with my baby is EASY when I think of that! And 2) If I keep things now to use for “that day” (whatever it will be), then I’m not allowing my future self to have the gift of buying something for my wants/needs in that moment!

We all have far too much, and rather than clutter our homes up with still more gifts, all our younger grandchildren (under 12s) get second-hand presents. They are not only happy with them, they enjoy the fact that they are receiving a gift that is part of the family's lived heritage. The older kids and adults get a letter saying which charity we have given a donation to on behalf of us all - like, say, a donation to educating girls in a country in the global south. Our adult children do the same. It means a lot less wasted stuff and wasted wrapping paper - and hopefully people far and wide receiving something they really need and benefit from.

I have no plans to go anywhere for a long time hopefully 🤞🙏 but I will be much happier with more room in my house as I realize that my home has become a storage facility for handed down family treasures. I really don’t understand American culture. I’m Portuguese, so European and Christmas is not stressful. Is the most wonderful time of the year. We put the decorations up in the beginning of December and down in the beginning of January, not immediately after Christmas. In my house, everything has his place so is very easy and I don’t go minimal with decorations. I have a big tree in every floor and a little one in every bedroom. In the end of the dinner we put the dishes in the washing machine and the left overs in the fridge and it’s all done. The preparation is simple with somethings done the days before but is fun doing it in family. When we open the presents we separate the wrapping paper and that type of things in the recicle bins and it’s done. The most interesting toys stay out to play in the days before and the rest go to its places. I buy gifts with meaning and prepare a month before. Some members get stressed because only think of it in the days before… I know that this comment is not kind but with minimalism you shouldn’t have all that work to reset.

I leave my (most of) my Christmas decor up until my tree dies...one year it was up until end of March. I redecorated it for my birthday! Lol. I love greenery so I have a lot of plants, too. I usually put away my nativity and other things slowly over January. My pine boughs are fake, so they stay up until the tree goes, usually. This year I only have 2 Rubbermaids of decorations, as I decluttered so much, so putting them away doesn't feel too overwhelming:) I just love to sit at night with the house lights off and tree lit, and be thankful for my cozy house and what Jesus has done for me.

It should be fun when I'm able to get back doing things to find everything. 🤣 Hopefully, I can finish decluttering & he'll know where everything goes. We do the 4 gifts for Christmas for our kids- something they want, need, wear & read. And I go very loose as necessary on these. For my three girls this year as their “need” I made the craft boxes you have talked about in the past Dawn! I think you called them inventor boxes and I called them creative bins. I bought them each a $4 bin from Target and then just went through all of the extra craft junk we already had and filled them up. I also got them each a brand new sketch book which cost $1 each so whole cost was around $5 each only. Amazing and it was one of their absolute favorite gifts!

I use a combo of all 3 of you to declutter and keep it going. But now I’m inspired to do some more! Thanks.

I took all my indoor stuff down yesterday! Christmas was so stressful for me this year and it was such a relief to get the house back to normal. Love watching you guys and thanks for always making us feel not alone. ❤️

I usually wait until after New Years to take down my tree. Gifts and other clutter gets put away the day after Christmas. This wasn’t always as easy when the kids were young, now it is just me, it just gets done. Yes, I have no problem using my donate bin. As decor goes, I have “Winter” and “Christmas”, there is a crossover. The sofa pillow covers span both seasons; anything Santa, Snowman or poinsettia goes with Christmas stuff. I like the clean fresh feeling of the change. I’ve been using all of your suggestions for years, especially the container concept. My mother used to say, “when you have to dust the ornaments, it’s time to put them away”. Happy New Year to all of you inspiring ladies. ❤️

Great to see your smile, Dawn! I am visiting my brother and family out of state, and I’m proud that I got my house nice and tidy before I left town. I’m looking forward to going home to a clean house!

I agree with you Dawn that in general once a gift is given and received, the receiver is not obligated to keep and use, wear or display the gift item. However, I think there is another exception to that "rule" in addition to how special the giver is to me -- if the giver hand made the item - for example a knit scarf or hat -- hand made gifts are always "keepers."

You guys know we are ACTUALLY in the Christmas season right now, don't you? Until January 6th. Why I don't put stuff up day after Thanksgiving. No wonder everybody is over it on the 25th. My kid is loving everything. I'm fine with some clutter and chaos for a bit longer.

My Christmas decor goes up the Saturday following Thanksgiving and stays up until the Saturday following Jan 1, so I'll take everything down on Jan 7.

I love to keep everything up as long as possible but not everyone celebrates through the Epiphany.

Yes! From a Christian perspective, the joyous peaceful 12 days of Christmas is just starting. It's not time to "put away" and "move on" from this holy season yet. Relax and reflect 🙏

This year I received a gift in the mail from a company thanking me for using their business. It was something I would not use so was about to put it in the donation bin when I noticed it looked broken, immediately put it to the recycling bin. I've leant through watching Dawn I no longer feel guilty to hang on to items and just deal with it right away, feels awesome! This year when I take down the Christmas decorations, I'll be putting some of the items in a box/bag for next years donation that I believe we're ready to let go of. I'll recheck in October/November then bring to the donation and yes always organized never just thrown about. Good luck to everyone decluttering, cleaning up after the holiday's and getting ready for a brand new year ♥

We do mostly gift cards for others! Keeps us on budget for christmas and allows the receiver to buy something as needed with their gift card.

Less stuff means less decisions, I still like the idea of living full time in a personalized vacation home where counters are clear, dishes fit, bed sheets, and bath towels are minimized to usable quantities. Our ‘lived in’ works really well for us. May we never go back to excess.

You are all right. I feel so much better this year after decluttering. It is easier to go through the house again and declutter now. It’s not overwhelming anymore to reset from Christmas
