80s LOVE - OG & Reissue Skateboard Decks

Жыл бұрын

A little old school versus/comparison video with a 1987 Powell-Peralta OG Tony Hawk and a Bones Brigade Series 9 Reissue Tony Hawk Skateboard Deck.
The idea came from a comment regarding Reissues being bigger than the OGs. I replied asking if he was comparing a mini or a full size and never heard back. In this video I'm using a Full Size Hawk compared to the 2017 Bones Brigade Series 9 Reissue.
By the way...sorry about the throat clearing. I had already tried a few takes and my throat was spent lol.

I started skating in the late 80s. My brothers friend had the hawk mini board back in the day. At first I was just knee boarding around the block. Then one day my older brother told me. Stand up and skate. And learn how to fall. 30 plus years later... I'm still learning, skateboarding, and falling. Lol

Got first board in 83. A 70s plastic one second hand, as a clueless 8 year old. Properly got into skating in late 87 after some kid blew my mind with a no comply on a new type of skateboard I had never seen. Santa cruz I think. After 1 or 2 second hand boards I got first new board in early 88, dogtown Eric dressen. Saw Powell vids and never looked back. Bad injury in 04 finished me off. I would give my left nut to be able to ride again. Thanks for the memories.

The size difference is due to the OG Hawk in the vid being an 88' not an 87'. The reissue is actually based off an 86' 7-ply before xt Bonite.. Interestingly enough there are mid year variations on 86, 87, 88 Hawk decks..

Super interesting comparison. I've always wondered how close re-issues are to OG. The only OG board I have is a Cab Dragon and Bats Boneite mini. I've added the series 10 Lance Mountain and Tommy Guerrero to the collection, and have the McGill on the way. The Guerrero and McGill were originally factory completes and the Guerrero has already been put back. The Mountain had some weird red rails and a red Tail Bone (really wish PP would come out with Rib and Tail Bones in colors other than just black and white again.) that I've replaced with black PP parts. As soon as the McGill shows up, it's getting put back to original as well.

@@80slove Posting videos always seems to fall into the "I should do that one of these days" category. You did inspire me to get some of my decks displayed though. I have around 40 up and on the wall now so that I can really enjoy them. A couple of recents - Silver Caballero Dragon and Bats that I bought for the black and gold Cab signature trucks that were on it( have to find a use for the purple and pink swirl Slime Balls now). Those went on a black and gold Chinese Dragon with white G-Bones. A gold glitter Natas Panther that had brand new blue Kryptonics Star Trac re-issues. Swapped them for orange Super Juice wheels, but left the black Indys on it. A black Aaron Murray that came with brand new Hosoi OJ III Rockets that went on a black Hammerhead and the red Madrids that were on it went on the Murray. I like my builds to be all PP, all Santa Cruz etc.

@@papawoody9597 Glad to hear you're displaying them at least. I hear you on keeping the brands together...makes sense. Those Cab trucks are killer and I probably told you this before but my first Pro Deck was an Aaron Murray. I was out skating my Reissue on Sunday...love it.

@@80slove The shape on Murray's deck is super dope, Dog Town's best IMO. When I built my purple fade, I had to get the purple prismatic DT logo grip too. With the green cross graphic and "Dog Town" in orange, I put orange OJs on it and it's way pimped out.

@80slove
@80slove 10 ай бұрын
Nice find. Skateone and the Powell Peralta website provides some good info on the original decks in their Re-issue descriptions: "About the Ripper Artwork: Arguably the most iconic skateboard graphic of all time, "The Ripper" was illustrated in 1983 by legendary Powell-Peralta artist V.C. Johnson. Originally the graphic was used as a "Bones Sold Here" dealer window sticker. Next, the artwork found it's way onto t-shirts and eventually decks. The Ripper graphic has stood the test of time and has been a staple of the Powell-Peralta line for over 30 years. Originally Released: 1983 Artwork by: Vernon Courtlandt Johnson" Outside of that I would be joining an OG Powell Peralta pages on Facebook...there's lots of collective knowledge in those groups.

@@FrightBites They started moving to screening onto the Heat Transfer then applying to the deck in the early 2000s...around 2005. The old application was screening directly to the deck. I'm under the impression this deck shape came out in 86 as well. Thrasher has Powell Peralta ads for this deck running as early as August 1986. Also, Hawk skates this deck in Police Academy 4, which was filmed between Sept-Nov 1986 (per IMDB). And there's a bunch or articles citing the release of this deck as 86. I think they got it wrong on the rider card.
