Learn how to change data sources using a parameter. In this video I will show you how you can do this when working with multiple excel files and when working with SQL tables and queries.

Under newer versions of PBI, the Edit Queries button has been renamed Edit parameters, found under Transform data button.

This is great, I have a question, How can we manage this in Power BI service, ultimately customer gonna use in service only.

Balaji, if you are wanting the customer to be able to dynamically switch your data sources, it is possible to build with Dynamic Query parameters. This is a feature released on February 2022, but it only applies to live query connection. As an administrator, you can change parameters on the Power Bi service. It doesn't have to be on the desktop only. But it is trickier for a customer to have those permissions

Thank you very much! Is there a possibility to pass the parameter selection to a slicer, so that the end user should not go to Transform Data->Edit Parameters every time?

Olena, I believe you are referring to dynamic query parameters. If I understand that correctly, you can set up a basic example following this tutorial: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ad2moc15ta2ygYU.html But this will only work with certain data sources. Dynamic parameters allow the end user to filter their data using a slicer, without having to update a parameter directly.

@@DapperDash thank you for the link! in my report name of the excel source in Advanced editor includes the parameter and then the correspondent Excel file is loaded depending on which parameter is currently selected So there is no workaround to make this work for the imported Excel file?

@@olenalipsha3748 This will not work on an import unfortunately. If you are familiar working with the PowerBI API, you can create custom code that will enable you to update parameters, but other than that, I don't believe you can update your excel data source using a slicer/filter :(

The presentation was excellent. The only thing that I wish it included if supported by Power BI, passing the parameter via the URL with a query e.g. ?param=store1. If that is possible please tell me how! :-)

Alfredo, I don't know 100% but I don't believe you can feed a parameter to a query by passing it through a url. But I can research.
