PART 2: • Power-King Stump Grind...
This is a Power King stump grinder with Greenteeth installed. I am impressed how fast this grinds for such a small grinder. I have a lot of trees in my yard and I am constantly cutting them down for one reason or another. Tired of the rentals. I did a lot of research and this looked good for only $1200. The stump I am grinding was cut down about 8 months ago and is about 20". Total time is around 30 minutes. I only go about 3"-4" below the surface and just cover with dirt.It has a built in tow bar receiver for towing around the yard. The motor is a Kohler 14hp and with the sharp Greenteeth, this thing cuts fast. In the link below is how I sharpen the teeth.

I'm looking to buy a stump grinder.this might be the one I get. I believe most stump grinders have cheap cutters. So I would upgrade to green teeth cutters

So with everything you bought did you have to cut any of the teeth or just drill the holes out more? I have everything in my cart but don’t want to buy it if I have to cut the teeth and weld them,

Bought a pk0803 today and also watched your video. AT 50 seconds in it showed all the teeth had been changed including the centers or at least it appears that way. I will be up grading all of them on mine and the infro you gave will help me in doing that. Is that what I am seeing.

Yes I kept the original center teeth because you would have to put a pair of straight Greenteeth in the place of one original tooth. You would also have a problem getting holes drilled because of the existing holes. You will see what I mean after you get the stump grinder and lay out how the teeth will go on. I also did not know how that would effect the performance with 3 more extra teeth and the extra weight. But from what I see the original center teeth running with the new Greenteeth works great. I ran the teeth in a flower garden loaded with pea gravel around a stump. I just ran it like normal leaving the gravel in place to see what would happen to teeth since I can just resharpen them if anything happens. Amazingly none of the sharped edge teeth chipped. I did chip one of the original center teeth, but I plan on sharpening the edge. You will really like the performance of the stump grinder. Also keep the plywood from the crate the stump grinder comes in. You can use it to make a nice tow bar to tow the stump grinder around.

I haven’t installed the teeth yet. I wanted to try out the teeth that came with the unit first. Just for the sake of comparing. The weather here in CT is terrible. I did try it out last weekend. I had a 30” round stump 16” out of the ground. The grinder worked great. The teeth did a nice job however I think the greenteeth work better. They seem sharper. I wished I didn’t have to make modifications to install them but I think I will. I’ll keep you posted.

I have never used a stump grinder like this. I have only rented the big 25 hp or more hydraulic grinders. I have rented them every couple of years and they are now up to $600 for 40 hours. Last time I rented, I just barely got my stumps done in the 40 hours. So I went looking for a used hydraulic grinder this winter to buy and use when I need it. I found they are very expensive and not what I wanted to pay. I noticed the large stump grinders all had these type of teeth. So then I started to look at small grinders that were affordable and came across this one with a 3 year warranty. After looking at all of the videos I wondered how this would perform with the same teeth as the large grinders. For $1200 I figured it would pay for itself from the rentals. I will always need a stump grinder since I have since LOTS of trees. So I bought this and gave it a shoot. I was expecting to do a 15" stump in a hour or two. I used the teeth that came with it for a while to make sure everything ran good before I made it non returnable by putting the other teeth on. After I put the teeth on and learned to sharpen them, I found out this thing eats the stumps in no time. It did not do to bad with the factory teeth, but there is not a good way to keep them sharp. I work around sharp metal cutting tools all the time so I understand how sharp carbide works. That 15" stump now takes about 25 minutes, if its soft, maybe less. It really has no vibration, but it its hard to push around the yard because its heavy. That is were most of the workout comes from, just moving it around and getting it into position. Once you start a cut , you can just let the weight help you as you just pivot back and forth. You have to stop very once and a while and get the chips out of the way because they pile up really fast. On the tire that is locked, when you keep pivoting back and forth it sinks into the ground because it so wet out now. Its hard to to get it out of the hole and move forward when your grinding. Again that is where the workout comes trying to push this thing around. But I love it, I really think this thing is as fast as a larger stump grinder, and I can use whenever I want and get my workout in for the week.

I purcahsed from CEI supply, 9- 500 series red teeth ( 18 teeth really to have 2 sets), 12-500 lo pro bolts 1-3/4", 6- 500 lo pro angled pocket, 3-500 lo pro straight pocket. This is a updated list since I have now found a way to add greenteeth to the center teeth. I am going to post a video soon.

I only use it on my large yard, so I do not us the grinder every day. They really never get dull or chip. I have 2 sets of the teeth and I rarely ever rotate them. They seem to stay sharp for a long time. I don't know if this is the stump grinder to make money with. Really is not that fast compared to the big ones. Just great for me in my yard.

@@skimpro2 well. if it takes 4x longer than a 25k one it still should make money... i know some of the big machines make around 200 plus per hour... a machine that make 30 plus per hour is all i would need...thax

I think you would need to rent a similar stump grinder from a rental store to see how you like this style. It is a workout to use. I like it for my large yard because I can use it any time I need it. I run it for a hour or two and take a break. The reason the one I have works fast is because I keep the teeth sharp all the time. This would not be case in most rentals. Seems very solid, but I have only had it for a few months.

Roadstar499, I agree about the others costing way more money. I spent a lot of time checking them all out, even looking at used rentals. I am really happy with this one especially for the price. You could use this for a small stump grinder business, and I have thought about that sometimes when I am grinding a stump. If this thing had powered wheels to move it around it would be unbeatable.

skimpro2 I live in sw Florida. ..I did have a lawn business years ago for over 20 years...as far as pushing it around I actually don't mind..I think the extra workout will be good...was thinking about buying this machine and a good chainsaw and maybe doing your tooth modification. I'm sure most stumps will be 10 to 20 inch diameter around my area...but I'm sure if I come accross a 3 or 4 footer using axe, pick axe, chain saw and this it would be no problem...what do think per hour a good operator and this machine is worth roughly? Just trying to figure out how much I should charge customers...anyway this machine does seem well built...how long does that tooth mod take? And does it really improve performance a lot...thanks

You shouldn’t have an issue with this machine. It’s a very good running machine. Reliable and strong. I kept the original teeth on it for now and they work fine. A set of Replacement teeth are 165. Single teeth are 20 a piece. I do like the green tooth idea. I’ll be doing that at some point. You need to charge at least 100 for the 1st hour then 60 to 80 for every hour after.

Where did you get those teeth and how much were they? Are the teeth the unit comes with, no good?
@skimpro2

These are called Greenteeth. Just Google the name and they will show up. I got mine from CEISupply.com. The teeth that come with the Grinder are flat or neutral geometry that does not cut as good as the Greenteeth which are positive. They slice through the wood like a chisel at an angle. Plus you just rotate them when they are dull and get a new cutting edge. You can rotate them 3 times before you remove them for sharpening. The teeth cost about $7 each , the holders are about $9.

Can you please give me the info needed to order the teeth. Holders and bolts. Been struggling trying to find the correct bolt on holders. And bolt sizes. I emailed them directly and they replied that they couldn’t match. I have the power king. 14hp Kohler just like yours and I am hesitant to use the supplied teeth. I would appreciate the info. Thanks.

Shane this is what I purchased: 6 500 Series: LoPro Angled Pocket 6 500 Series: Deep Dish Red Tooth w/Nut (Actually 12 pcs for a extra set) 6 LoPro Bolts: 1-3/4" Just be aware that you are modifying a power tool. Do this at your own risk. This is only a suggestion on adding teeth. You must know what your doing and be mechanically inclined. If you are not sure, find someone who knows. I left the 3 original center cutting teeth on the grinder equally spaced as they came on the machine. When you remove the other teeth, you will have 4 empty bolt holes in 3 groups. Take the two holes in the middle of each group and that is where you will bolt a pair of the Greenteeth holders. In other words, Greenteeth need a bolt spacing of 1.5" and you will see this in the holes between the old cutter holes. They will all be equally spaced when installed by using the existing holes. Take off 2 sets of teeth and draw this on a piece of paper in a pie shape and lay it out. Then it will make sense. You will have to drill out these holes for the larger Greenteeth bolts. Make sure you torque all of the bolts to the spec found on the Greeteeth website. You can always put bushings in the old holes if you want to go back to the original teeth if you know what you're doing. This is how I did the installation and someone else may have a better idea. If you use the grinder in a sweeping motion from side to side and do not plunge, these angled teeth will really cut fast. Its still an upper body workout but it takes a stump down in no time. I got an extra set of teeth so I can resharpen them myself. There are videos of this on KZfaq. I also made a 5 foot long Hitch out of wood that goes into the receiver on the back of the grinder. This attaches to my 2" ball on my 4 wheeler and I can easily tow around the yard to where I need to grind.
