Power Steering Pump Operated Car Lift

Another case of Build It or Buy It? Ended up with an old Rotary 4 post car lift that was missing the hydraulic lift motor/pump. Had been debating about what hydraulic pump to get, some of the cheap import ones just didn't have stellar reviews... So, why not try to piece something together instead?
Safety Note: The hydraulic portion of a lift like this is used only to raise the vehicle, it is not meant to be the sole means of support. The mechanical locking system must be in working order as made by the mfg. I didn't go over it much in the video, but the entire lift was actually gone through to ensure proper function and condition. Hydraulics fail, and just like a floor jack, should never be trusted as a means of support. There's a lot of things you can skimp on, but not when there's 7000 lbs over your head.
The high pressure side of the Hydraulics system also needs some awareness, with pressures up well over 1000 psi. Components like hoses, fittings, and gauges need to be rated to handle it.

My uncle has an International Scout that he used to use as a plow truck, his FIL rigged the power steering to the plow's hydraulic cylinder.

I never thought I would see this done again, Back in the 60's my uncle had lots of big trucks, He had 2 large steel ramps 20 ft, in all 4 corners he set 8 inch steel pipes, a Large piston 4 ft long sat down inside those pipe with a pin going though the piston eye, the top connected to the ramp, He had 4 electric motors running car power steering pumps, a switch turned all 4 on at the same time, Lifting his big trucks, I never thought they were strong enough to do that. Now I see you doing it, Awesome

For the safety latches, you should see if you can rig up the t-handle ebrake mechanism out of an old Toyota minitruck for the job. Pull out to engage, twist to unlock! Probably need 2 of them to run the pair of em on each side, still a hassle but far less hassle.

Nice yankee ingenuity! Have almost chased that exact same project several times w/near acquisition misses! Finally got concrete poured in barn, so I still may have to resurrect that one! It's pure miracles that we can dumpster dive in our own junk drawers, junk piles, et al -- and magically find just the right part (or amend the design on the fly based upon available inventory)! Thanks for sharing the process! Could only guess on the fluid fountains, but sorta glad you spared us! :)

When I bought my Dodge pickup it was called the snow fighter at the time in 1974 they had a power steering pump mounted inside the engine compartment with hoses that ran the snow plow, and the thing worked excellent and it never froze up, like the external pumps that hang on the plow itself

Just remember what you are lifting will increase the pressure, And practice with dummy weights first. Watch somr failed lift videos to see how dangerous they can be if not used right.

A 2 post lift needs a substantial floor because the weight will likely be off center. IOW, you can't set them on footings as he did in the video. A 4 post lift will always push straight down so footings are not as critical.

I have 2 of this 4 post lifts & 4 of the 2 post lifts & to be honest the $200 Amazon pumps from China have performed great, a couple i cave are over 5 years old & used daily with no problems. I love to reuse old parts also. My office has a custom built 1995 GM truck air conditioning unit capable of producing over 18,000 btu &keeps the room a cool 70 degree. My hot water comes from a steel tank mounted on roof with a hot water element that kicks on to maintain 100 -120 degree. It never comes on in summer & uses little power in winter months with temp blankets placed over tank. Nessesity has always been the mother of invention, great job.

You have some great videos! I love rigging up stuff and keeping things going long after most folks would toss them. Before retiring from the two-way radio field, I wasn't very popular with the salesmen because I would keep customers' equipment working when they were told they needed new stuff. Since retiring, I now help out at the local public safety training center rigging up vehicles to be crashed remotely to gather data for classroom training and research. There is no manual for rigging up that kind of stuff and a lot is homemade, such as the steering servo made using a windshield wiper motor. I don't mind putting things in harm's way because I figure if you break a homemade item, just make another one! I wish my small workshop was as well equipped as yours. Keep up the good work!

i use one of those pumps to lift used motor oil about 6 feet . after a while it stopped working . removed internal filter , and it has been working great for a few years now . i get 15-20 gallons from a service station once a week , and it goes into pump unfiltered . over the years , it has pumped about 2000 gallons .

safety latch things, my immediate thought was universal car door lock actuators. I use them a lot for projects that need a push pull action. They're cheap on the rainforest site.

I happen to have a lift with no pump, I am planning on using an old log splitter as the tank should be big enough but my backup is the old power steering pump fix, thanks for sharing

Awesome video, thanks for recording and posting this...I would mount the control valve so that lifting the handle would lift the cylinder, and pushing the handle down would lower it.

a neat idea i saw using a power steering pump was a home made transmission fluid pressure washer that was used back in the 70s to spray used fluid on fences and barns. the old man had to tell me what it was because id never guessed.

I used a GM power steering pump in the mid 1970's to power a scraper. it was slow bur worked great for a poor boy !!!

Youre right about the part of laying on the ground to work on a truck. What you came up with has that beat. I think I would have invested a little more $ in more suitable incidentals from a surplus store, such as correct size wire with proper conduit protection, a real motor starting contactor, maybe even a better motor. And the safety pin mechanism! You really need that to function correctly!. Overall, you did well with what you had to work with. Thanks for sharing.

If he's like me, I want to try it out and prove it's concept before spending money on the more permanent upgrades. I live way out in the country and a trip to the closest mom n pop hardware store is over 20 min each way which amounts to time n money. I've usually got what I need here in my shop for most plumbing and electrical needs if I look hard enough. That's the challenge and it is extremely satisfying when it works!

Should have tried connex bushings. There expand and designed to squeeze slightly when droven in. Great for slightly worn holes.

You have gotten another sub & like. I got to tell you, the ending was epic. You're absolutely right, and a lot of people wouldn't understand it. you're just like me, when it comes to mechanical stuff & engineering.... a genius, if you will. It's our ability to take devices around us, get a basic understanding of their function, repair, and successfully repurpose them. That is how I am able to fix a car that I've never worked on before, I understand the functions of things, and just wing it on the rest. many of that understanding, I owe to doing projects like this. Yeah, you can buy another hydraulic pump setup for quite a bit of money, or you can use that knowledge of things, and how they work to your benefit. And just so you all know out there, a 5 gallon drum of hydraulic oil is way more than $65.😏👍💯💯💯

Biggest thing is make sure you don't need a really high pressure supply, ~1700 psi seems to be about what I can get out of mine.
