APIPA Explained - Automatic Private IP Addressing

What is APIPA? If Microsoft Windows computers cannot make contact with a DHCP server to get an IP address, they will self-assign themselves an IP address. These IP addresses will be in this range 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.255.254. And the reason they do this is so that they will still be able to communicate with other computers on the same local network/subnet that also have self-assigned IP addresses.

I've actually seen a server on fire. I yanked the power cord out of the wall with a pair of side cutters. The manager put it out with a fire extinguisher. So, I'd say your graphic was pretty realistic.

I had a 17" CRT monitor light up right in front of me once. I don't like thinking about what would've happened if I wasn't nearby. It gave me second thoughts about leaving the house with certain kinds of computer hardware still operating.

I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for these videos. I can't tell you how many spoken word lecturers I listened to studying for A+ without grasping the core of these really abstract concepts. Then I found your simple animations and everything started to click. My Core 1 exam is in a week, and for the first time in months, I think I can actually do it

What kind of questions? Like what happens when a DHCP server cannot be reached, or why a computer can’t reach the internet even though it has network connectivity?
@abg44
@abg44 3 жыл бұрын
@@jackchn23you are a support agent, A user was recently connected to the network. But notices when she opens her browser, she is unable to connect to the homepage. When you check Ipconfig on her system. You notice this IP address. What does this IP address mean if it's being automatically assigned? They'll ask you to confirm if DHCP is working or is not working based on that IP address alone.

I remember back in the days when all we had was a simple network hub which I believe they didn't have a built-in DHCP server, maybe I'm wrong but I think they were able to connect each others without any configurations, anyways, the auto connection wasn't reliable so we were always configuring our own private IPs, Thank you very much, that was very informative
