What a lot of tourists do not understand is that these people are not actors or performers, they are real soldiers on duty. This is one of their deployments, but they have usually served elsewhere in the army. This job is hard and thankless, they have to wear a very heavy full dress uniform in any weather and mostly guard against tourists who behave like children and treat them like objects.

I immediately rushed over and began grabbing them. I'm sure I usually didn't touch, but perhaps those where too lovely to not want to hold. 🤗 I did manage to embarrass my father, who recounted the tale every time we were near the house, even into my late fifties. 😁

They are often regarded as only there for show, actors acting a part, and very few bother to look and check exactly who/what they are when they AREN'T doing public guard duty. So ignorant - and not just of the guards in London, I've seen similar comments about both the Swiss Guard in the Vatican and the Norwegian servicemen (when they were recently in Edinburgh for the tattoo and were videoed at Edinburgh Zoo presenting an award to their superior officer, which really garnered some very offensive comments from the totally ignorant and disrespectful). They seem to think that because they have a long tradition and wear dress uniforms that reflect that tradition they are no different to Hollywood/Disney actors playing a part at Disneyland or Universal Studios. Utterly pathetic and seems to be something that is becoming more and more common, certainly when I was a kid (and I grew up in NZ) we knew that all the the guards - no matter how fancy their dress uniforms - were serving officers in their respective countries militaries.
