1 possible reason they are using a 3 pin connector is because some models may be using 1 extra wire which turns on and off the LED inside the socket

I believe USB is only 5v and the cigar socket is 12v, think you should put a volt meter on and check, you don't want to blow anything up . Could be the reason for different colour plugs.

I checked in my Defender and USB-C port similar to the one on video delivers 2,5 times more power then USB-A to my IPhone 11Pro. Since USB-A ports and 5V 1A, that means this USB-C port is 5V 2,5A. So if you want to have PD fast charge or give power to wireless charger, 12v socket is the only option. Since these USB sockets use same fuse as 12v socket, I presume we can change it without poroblems

I solved the problem of plugging those USB Type-A connectors the right way round - stick a small coloured label on one side of the plug.

Doesn’t USB C provide more amps ideally for quicker charging? Would the RR provide that change in amps?

@L663 Awesome video! Can you please measure how many volts and amps are you receiving from the USB-C port you swapped at the front? Not the back ones.

What about fitting the heads up display? Will that be possible even ?

Think USB C can support and provide more power over USB A. I think the Freelander 2 could do with a few more ports :)

In the Discovery Sport, the rear USB is pretty easy to disassemble through the centre cubby, not sure the new Defender is the same. I’ve added in a USB port to the rear as mine was the lower spec car (HSE rather than HSE lux). The genuine ports are a bit pricey £45-50!

Great video. I do think your approach is the best way. As someone who has replaced the panels in the middle to wood inserts on the center console, there definitely isn’t an easy way to get to those ports (or anything else in that center console) without taking the whole thing out. Also, I wonder if power is different with the cigar lighter (DC volt) versus the USB powered ones - there did seem to be a different wire there… what’s interesting, is it might actually charge devices quicker with a stronger voltage/better for tablets or iPads???

Hi Simon another great video, it’s possible that all your c, usb etc is 12v iat the connector then it’s a regulated 12 volt to 5 volt circuit built inside of the outlet. where as the tan coloured cigar connector is straight 12V to the the cigar socket . When trying to remove the outlets you could try a bent pick tool to depress the 2 Little ears to retrieve the outlet socket . Regards mark

Will these (USB C) fit the 2023 Defender 130? We received only the USB A, USB C and 12V charging/data ports just below the temp controller panel in our 130. None in second row and we also didn’t get the one on the dash for front passenger. Hoping these will work. Also need a 12V or two for second row.

Hi all, great video Simon, does anyone know if all the outlets are supplied the same voltage and amps? Im, no electrical expert but ive been using a mount with magsafe charge off the lower console set USBC port with no issues but to get away from having the cord dangling down I bought a usbA to usbC converter/adaptor and tried to use the usbA plug up near the screen with the magsafe and the adaptor but it doesnt charge? If its likely the adaptor cousing the lack of power if I get the unit Simon is installing here will it work with apple magsafe charger?
