For one who has been following home-built CNC projects for a long time, this is by far the most complete and easy-to-understand overview of tool changing on small machines that I have been able to find! Well done!! Thank you for sharing and for your excellent links!

SUUUUUUPER psyched to build a similar system. I am just so over changing R8 collets. This also means I can have tool offsets in my DRO finally! wooo!

You should put one of those aviation flags that says "Remove before Use " on the plug,,If you are like me, you'll be holding down the air button trying to fit a collect wounder why it won't go in.

Absolutely awesome, thank you very much! Totally makes sense and I have wondered for a long time how this system would work....

Thank you Kent! I love instagram for its ability to show little slices and progress of a project before the whole scope of it is revealed on KZfaq! I think my next step now is to play the Tool Library game and make sure to get all my offsets *perfect* 😀
@TMCmakes
@TMCmakes 4 жыл бұрын
@@PracticalRenaissance before you go too far down that road, have you considered something like automatic tool offset (similar to tool break check)? i have a library defined and am now looking at going to something like this instead. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y6pme5ye1bvZYH0.html this video makes me want to put PDB on the list above tool setting though. any chance you'd share the model for the custom piece you machined for this project? i'd like to 3d print one and start making plans based on this video.

While it does work perfectly I prefer the electrical solution using a 24 volt linear thruster.....click on.....click off, no compressor needed......if you need more force just use a 4:1 offset lever advantage. I'm not a big fan of the Tormac system design of a power draw bar that applies a huge force to the collet to overcome the force of the Bellville washers mainly to hold the tool in the collet as my opinion is that the collet relaxes when the tool is gripped whereas you need more force not less to grip the tool shank.

Thanks for sharing this video it has help me understand the concept. I do have 1 question can you explain the air setup , other than the big green button ....is that a 2 position 3 way valve? I see a shutoff of course and the blue line must be the input supply right ? Can you in detail go over this section of the setup

I've gone ahead and ordered a 4in cylinder & have access to about 120 psi (~1500 lbs) - Been trolling youtube for all the PDB videos I can get my hands on, and some are saying you need north of 2200 lbs. I'm using the TTS quick change system on a PM30-MV and often run a 3/4" shear hog pretty hard. You ever use tools that big successfully with no tool holding/retaining issues? Or would you move up to some kind of higher force system? Awesome video, as always, thanks for sharing!

So if I understand this system correctly, the drawbar is always threaded into that special collet, and then you change what the collet is holding basically?

have you had any issues with tool pull out?
@PracticalRenaissance
@PracticalRenaissance 4 жыл бұрын
A couple times early on, yes! But that was part of getting the tension set on the drawbar to a good amount of pressure. After that, hasn’t been an issue!

Thanks for the inspiration and info. I just got my version of this done. You were a huge help during the process. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbF7Y5tiu5PNfIU.html I still have to cut a length of fine thread 1 inch rod to make the spacer. But I've got this block of aluminum to use for testing until then lol
I made a small 3 stage cylinder for my power draw bar
