This video is here so that you can test how well you know your major scales. It's a test I call "The Acid Test" and it's where we both play all 12 major scales in a chromatic root movement (going up in semitones) by ear, preferably. This is something I challenge my clients to do and when they're able to do it, it empowers them, making everything to do with the sax, such as learning and playing melodies, understanding new concepts about music and improvisation much, much easier. See if you can complete the task and tell us how you got on in the comments below.
If you find my video's informative, useful and slightly amusing and you'd like to buy me a coffee, you can here - www.buymeacoffee.com/lyndenbl... and me and my family will be very grateful for your kindness. If you prefer PayPal its here: paypal.me/saxlessonsonline?co...

That's a great motivation to learn those last couple of scales Lynden, thanks for the nudge to get on with it and finally learn Db and F#. You're right, it does give you a boost! Great exercise! I tried it in reverse, but that's a bit more tricky!

I see you use the Bis key for some and the side Bb for others. I’ve found that in the key of E for example, a person can keep the G# and D#/Eb keys depressed and fly through the scale with much more ease. Also, I don’t understand why we have both a G# and C# spatula key. The C# key can double as the G# and the venting is better. Also, when descending to the low C# while in the key of E (for example) by using the C# instead of the G#, it allows for quick transition to low C# (assuming the previously stated depressing of the C# spatula key) I want to design a sax which links both mechanisms and places the singular key for both G# and C# in the G# position. We don’t need two keys because the one works for both.

Hi Kris, personally I mostly use the bis key. I think your comments about saxophone design are really interesting and please let me know if you redesign one! Thanks again 🤝🤝😎😎

@@lyndenblades coming from clarinet to sax, I’ve never felt at peace with the tempo of finger rolling in the Key of F# (for example), and if you’re in the key of F and have to transition from Bb to C and back quickly, there’s this little flip flop which can insert a quick intermediate C# at high speeds. I use three different Bb fingerings depending on which scale I’m in or song. A good example of needing a 1 and 2 fingering is the soprano part in David Sanborn’s “As We Speak” where you go from a low F# to B-A#-G#-F# in a rapid descent. The only way to do this with fluidity is to play the B and then drop the 2 right hand (F#) and flash to the G#

This is brilliant! One question as I’m a novice when it comes to music theory….when you set up the SessionBand app on your iPad…do you input the C major, then Db, then D, etc…and then have it transpose it for Eb saxophone, or do you change it to the Eb saxophone first and input C major, Db, D? Hope that makes sense….

Hi Pete, thank you for your message. Yes that makes perfect sense and yes, I set it up in concert pitch and once I’ve created my track I change the transpose setting to Eb. Hope this helps 🤝🤝🎷🎷

Great and i've tried following this but I would like to create that chord sequence on my iPad is it possible to give an idiots guide how to do it because every time i try what gets save is not what I created. Im obviously not that great on the iPad but eqyally the Session Band Apps leave a lot to be desired instruction wise.

Hi Louis, I will certainly think about doing that. I have a lot of videos in the pipeline and I work full time teaching, but I’ll put it on the list of things to do for you.

do these scale names need to be transposed to the what the piano player is talking about on his instrument?
@lyndenblades
@lyndenblades 5 ай бұрын
Hi Ben. You don’t need to transpose anything on this video because it’s written out for alto sax, but you would need to transpose for piano. If you had a live piano accompanying you, they would start on Eb major, then E major and ascending chromatically from there. Hope this helps! 🤝🤝🎷🎷
