@@rockwellrhodes7703 Although science has decoded most Prairie Dog language (which is the most complex language next to human), scientists still don’t know exactly what the yahoo means. It’s used in a few different contexts, but they’re almost all positive. The most common use is after the predator has left and all of the dogs yahoo together as a collective “celebration” that the danger is gone. With that in mind, the most obvious reason that prairie dogs yahoo when their owner comes around is because they feel safe with that person. ..and when you’re safe, you’re happy. Prairie dog warning calls are EXTREMELY specific and differ drastically depending on the species, size, color, and shape of the predator. They sound like barks and yelps - hence the name “prairie dog”. The yahoo is very different in sound and use. ..and that is _not_ what a “terrified” prairie dog looks like BTW. 😂

They are also very social and intelligent,they make a whole society of their own in the wild and can describe a predators feature like it's size,colour and many more.it could even describe a human with a gun.they should not be kept in cages.

they typically bond with one specific person and by everyone else I had one and it was the worst pet I had besides may be a pitbull. they're not litter box trained at all so they're gonna poop and P all over the place and when they bite those big jaws are strong as hell and I have permanent scars but when they do bond with one person they tend to be fairly affectionate and they like that one person a lot. there's a good reason these are not popular pets they don't make very good pets.

Turns out having an innate urge to protect weak and fragile babies is really useful for the survival of the species

we have the most useless babies in the animal kingdom so we have strong protective instincts. We've also benefitted greatly from domesticating wild animals which probably makes humans instinctually or at least culturally drawn to animals on some level.
