I have had a thing for micrometers ever since I first came across them early in my career, I like the smooth operation, the precision, the accuracy and the build quality of the tools.
This is the first micrometer I have ever purchased for myself and it cost me all of £0.50 at the car boot sale in 2018. The stall holder had no idea as to what it was and I had to tell him, it is amazing what people don't know.
This micrometer was made by L.S. Starrett and the model number is 113, it has a patent date of 30 December 1902. What a beauty!

I still have my grandfather’s old Starrett 0-1” mic, in much better condition than the old one was in this video only it’s about .007 out of calibration. I’d like to try restoring it 100% and be able to use it for work someday.

Please don't force the mic closed in attempt to attain zero on the datum line. Try to find a mic wrench to turn the sleeve round to meet zero on the thimble. Or you can undo the ratchet and knock the thimble down (it will become free) with a screwdriver handle to "break" the taper, set to zero then re-tighten. Anyway, I thought it was a total basket case but you salvaged it into an interesting curio that still has use. Good camera work and narration.

Thank you very much for the video. As a proud American and an aspiring Machinist, I love the Starrett Mics. I also only buy second hand. Being in Southern California, I've been very fortunate to have scored some really great deals from the Classifieds, Yard Sales, Pawn Shops, and even some Thrift Stores. I definitely shop around for the deals.

You did a wonderful job restoring this Starrett caliper. It is 10 years older than my dad almost to the day and made where my dad was born! Sweet!

You said you'd like to have another, I'd gladly send you a couple of my used ones. I have a bunch, that just happens to be my right hand tool for the last thirty years. I love starrett mic's but I can't buy them anymore because they've done what many other American companies have done, moved their manufacturing to China and got higher priced and sorry quality at the same time. The last two I bought, paid about $280 each and spent about two hours with them and couldn't even achieve .0002 uncertainty factor. Now I'm buying older mint condition brown and sharp. If I tighten the threads twice, thats usually where I have to quit using them because they start to run out from top to bottom about .0002. I don't rely on these for that close of measuring but I do have to eliminate any uncertainty factor that I can. These mics are still great for almost anyone else, so seriously, I would be glad to send you a couple if you like. Just let me know :) Thanks for the video I like to see that kinda stuff

4:00 I wonder what the dimples are? Clamp marks or did someone try and spread the metal to re-calibrate it? (Which I don't think is the correct technique.) Nice video. I love the English phrases. Car boot sale that will do get the crap off fetch the rust bad knick at all muck off.

That came out really nice. I do enjoy your videos. One question is a carboot sale similar to our American flea market?
@NashRathbone
@NashRathbone 5 жыл бұрын
If a flea market has loads of people pitching up to sell stuff from the back of a car or van then yes. Where I go to is a field that is opened up every Sunday morning that you pay a fee to the owner to sell your stuff. The fee varies from cars to vans etc, buyers get in for free. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
